I haven't owned a bike since I was 18. I think I'd like one now, for fun and fitness. I'd be riding hilly suburban roads. Nothing major.
Looking at hybrids, but can't decide. I'm short, like 5'2" short. Don't want anything too big or too heavy. Amazon has Schwinns on sale, but I can't seem to find any that are well reviewed for short people, and have been warned away from Schwinn. However, the price is right.
Any suggestions for a short, out of shape, suburban rider? TIA

I recently got a Forge Brand from Target and the model is Coco. I too, am short and it is recommended for shorter women and has quite a few good reviews. They are not sold in stores so you have to order online. The price right now is $259 but they do go on sale and I know I paid less than $200 and used my Red Card so free shipping and extra 5% off. My DH was pretty pleased with the construction when he assembled it and he is quite picky. He needed to call the company with a question and customer service was excellent! Sorry I haven't learned how to do a clickable link, but here is the address. www.target.com/p/forge-womens-coco-15-comfort-style-bike-brown/-/A-10502172#?lnk=sc_qi_detaillink Hmmm. Looks like this link is clickable. Good luck in your search.

I have osteoarthritis in my knees so I like my Electra Townie.

The Electra Townie is lovely, but WAY out of my price range!
Thanks 5peanutsnana - your link is clickable!

Sorry you ruled out the Townie on price. I have a pink one and I love it. My 13 year old is exactly 5 feet tall and she steals my bike all the time instead of riding her own.

I bought a new bike a couple of months ago after riding a GT for 23 years. Our local bike shop carries the brand Giant which is made in the US, so I went with this bike and I bought a boy bike, not a women's bike. Mine is black with yellow/green accents. It's a great ride.

Electra Townie girl here too. One for me, one for DD. It's not just a bike; it's an investment! I can take it back to the bike shop for lifetime maintenance for free, so I did look at the price over the long-term. I have had too many bikes that just did not last, and I am only a recreational rider. You might try craigslist to see if you can find one there. I would pick up a used Townie before I ever bought a different bike. Or check with your local bike shops to let them know you would be interested in a used Townie if they find a customer is selling one. Bike shops are kind of awesome for that.

I ruled out the Townie due to the price. NO way was I going to spend that much on a bike. I did a bunch of research and every $200 bike I found had mediocre reviews at best. The only constant was the glowing reviews for the Townie. So I thought maybe I'd get the single speed electra cruiser that was around two hundred something (but only mail order that I could find). So I thought I'd go to the bike shop and just look at the townies they had and maybe it would be similar to the cruiser and I could make my decision. Went to the shop and I ended up with a Townie 7D. Over $500 bucks after adding the basket and fender kit. So much for not spending that much. I LOVE my townie. The best part? I am only 5' tall but I can touch the ground easily even while sitting on the seat.

My dream bike is a Public C7 in powder blue (...or maybe red....hmmmmmm). Expensive, but one of the best designed city bikes out there & they have their frames sized so shorties like us can ride comfortably.
::sigh:: someday

I have an Electra Townie too. I LOVE it so much! Originally it was out of my price range, but I took extra time to save up for it and it has been worth every penny. I use it so much. It's been so great because I have a ton of health problems, but still want to be able to exercise so I don't run into other health problems by not exercising. So being able to have my feet reach the ground and still sit when I need a break is extremely helpful. Oh, I'm also only 5ft and got the 24" version. I had to splurge for a basket too - perfect for water bottle, sweatshirt, etc.
I'm pretty sure I posted a thread asking the peas which bike to get. Since so many recommended this bike, I had to check it out, and as always, the peas were correct, it's awesome!

I have a Trek Neko and love it. It is a hybrid. I love that I can go from the road to a trail without having a different bike. I've owned it for the past couple of years. It rides really nice no matter where I am.
