My sister-in-law teaches in a prison. Her students love to be read to. One of their favorites was "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien. Great book.

Wonderful story. Children's books are for everyone, aren't they? I still have many of mine 50 years later - some I got from Scholastic! And I still love to read them.

Wonderful article. Thanks so much for posting this. I am very grateful to have had parents who are both readers and read to me when I was a child. I felt so sorry for the men in the article, especially the one who said he'd never been read to.

That was a lovely story - thank you for sharing. I was surprised to see that it was in Alabama, living here, I don't tend to see us as very progressive when it comes to helpful programs in prisons.
I've been interested in incarceration reform for a few years now (ever since discovering Liberation Prison Yoga) and I'm in awe of those who are willing and able to go into these places to do such important work. As a matter of fact, just yesterday I just discovered "Ear Hustle" a podcast out of San Quentin that is fascinating. I think it's so important that as a society we begin to see these incarcerated men and women as human beings instead of simply slapping the label "criminal" on them and leaving them to rot.
