We moved into a new home in December. Most of our furniture is stuff we bought before we got married 13 years ago and lived in a 1,200 sq ft condo. We are not design people. We want to hire someone that can come in and help us come up with a design plan for the house. We want to paint and buy furniture. Eventually we are going to want to build out the unfinished basement and some other things. Do we need an interior designer? Decorator? ?

Decorator for the house, designer for the basement? LOL
I had a decorator from Home Depot help me pick colors and blinds for our first house. She came, free of charge, if you ordered some of the Silhouhette (SP?) blinds they had just started carrying. She was great and I hated leaving those blinds behind. LOL

We utilized the "designer" person at Star Furniture when we were replacing all of our furniture recently. She came out to the house, measured etc. and helped pick out things that would all coordinate together...including mirrors and rugs. (We were replacing everything in every room due to losing it all in the fire.) Some of her taste ran a little pricey....lol....so we took her advice and found some things (ie: rugs) elsewhere. But she was good at helping to pick out fabrics and colors and keeping things in scale for the rooms. She also had good advice for window treatments etc that we could then do on our own. There was no charge for that service....but we did buy a LOT of furniture from them! So, if there is some sort of furniture store like that near you, you may be able to utilize these types of services for free from them as well. That will give you more money to spend on the new stuff!

If Ethan Allen is in your budget & your taste for furniture, I would go that route. I have worked with 2 designers there over the years that were amazing. I have used their design services for two different homes. The second was a new build and in addition to the selections for the additional rooms she was helping me furnish, she did give me some input and advice on my flooring selections and the paint colors for the adjoining rooms (many of which had the furniture she helped pick from our previous home). The services went far beyond picking the actual furniture... they helped with paint, rugs, window treatments, artwork, etc. I bought a lot there, but certainly not everything and that was okay.

Many furniture stores offer free design services for purchasing home furnishings. Or, you could contact ASID and interview interior designers, again for the furnishings.
For a design of a build, like your basement, you want a home designer or architect.
