With a Speed Queen! And I just hope that I've made the right choice. I tried to find a 2017 model, but none are left to purchase. I've seen the negative reviews on the 2018 models, and it is disquieting. But the choices for a new top loading machine with agitator are limited, and I didn't feel good about the models/brands that are available. So I'm expecting a truck with my new machine sometime this morning. I've just ordered by phone this morning from a dealer outside the metropolitan area who had a truck coming my way today. This is a family operated business in a small town, and the owner assured me that they would give good service if I needed it.
So its on its way. Thanks to all you Peas who own these machines for steering me in this direction.

Wow 28 years?! I'd love to know what brand you originally had.

We have a Speed Queen and LOVE it! We got it last year. What's wrong with the 2018 models?

Wow 28 years?! I'd love to know what brand you originally had. It was a Kitchen Aid. I have really loved this machine. No bells/whistles. Knobs for water-temp-cycle control. But it almost never got out of balance during the spin cycle, and cleaned well without wearing out my clothes. And there's no rust anywhere.

My mom's had a Speed Queen for decades. IMO, you've made a good choice.

We have a Speed Queen and LOVE it! We got it last year. What's wrong with the 2018 models? As I understand it, Speed Queen had to make modifications mandated by Government controls, and the tub and agitator are now one unit. Some reviews claim this has really affected the washing cycle, and the cleaning ability of the machine has been compromised. There's also now a lid lock. It's really dificult to know whether the new models are inferior or not. In hindsight, I wish I had replaced the old one while I could have bought a 2017. I did find one dealer in the area that had 3 of the 2017 models, but they would not sell them as a single unit--wanted me to also buy the dryer which I don't need.

I had a Maytag the I bought for $50.00 used when I first got married. It lasted for well over thirty years. It rusted and when we moved it to put in a new floor the jiggling it around killed it. If we hadn't had to move it, it probably would have lasted another five years. We've had three more since that one died and I still long for my old Maytag. Now with all the new, front loader, low water things that are on the market I am dreading the death of the one I have now even though I don't really like it. I too like top loader and agitator.
Good luck with your new one.

Wow!, 28 years. You got your monies worth out of it for sure. I had a Kenmore that lasted 22 years and I thought that was good.

They don't make them like they used to that is for sure... I don't ever even remember my mom ever getting new ones...
I have had at least five sets in 20 years... every time one breaks I just lose my marbles. DH is pretty handy but usually they are not fixable. One time we had someone come out to fix it and blamed it on our floor... said it was uneven... WHATEVER dude. It was your stupid machine. After we replaced that one, we got a top loader without the agitator in the middle and so far after 5 years it's been good, though the lid started rusting...

We replaced my husband's parents 35 year old General Electric washing machine a couple of years ago. It worked beautifully until it just didn't anymore. They sure don't make them like that anymore!

When I was looking a few months ago, I asked my local Speed Queen dealer about the bad reviews. They were concerned enough to call up Speed Queen Corporate for an answer. Speed Queen replied that they were the victims of a vicious smear campaign and that only a small number of the new 2018 models had been shipped at that time but yet they were already getting hundreds more in negative reviews. Take it for what it's worth. I did go and look at one anyway but found the propeller probably would've given me a black eye on a regular basis and the tub was awfully small for my needs. May you have better luck than I did! (I got a Maytag Bravos instead and am not impressed.)

GamGam Please let us know if you like your new 2018 Speed Queen. The washer I have now is over 20 years old. It was here when we bought the house 20 years ago and it was at least a few years old then. It's starting to make an awful lot of noise in the spin cycle. I think its days are numbered. A repair man told my husband that they don't make parts for it any more and to just buy a new one once it is unusable. My husband is looking for a 2017 or older used Speed Queen for me. He found one but it was super expensive (and it was 17 years old). The lady selling it knows that people want the older ones. I saw the bad reviews on Youtube and I'm hesitant to get a 2018 so I'm really curious about your new machine. Good luck. I hope it works out for you and that you love it. Please let us know.

The Maytag washer that came with the house is well over 30 years old. The timer went on it a few months ago and I looked into what we'd replace it with while my husband looked for the part. I would have gone with a Speed Queen if my husband hadn't managed to find the right part on the second try. I dread it breaking down again.

I'd love to poll the Refupeas here to see how long their newer washers last(ed). Like the OP, I had my original washing machine (Kenmore) for over 20 years until it died. Seemed like everything I got to replace it only lasted about 5-7 years, if that! Same with my refrigerators! I swear, they're all meant to last only a few years now. It's a shame!
Good luck with your new washer, GamGam!

Excellent thread! Hope you have good service with the new washer. Mine is a Whirlpool and is probably nearly 15 years old. It works fine, but I see rust in places on the lid and around the edges. I didn't realize you can't buy one with an agitator now. I did suspect they are "low flow" as everything water related seems to be now (my new kitchen faucet barely puts out enough of a stream to make bubbles in the sink...)

I just replaced my 21 year old washer and dryer with Speed Queens a couple of months ago! I was able to get one of the last 2017 model washers without the lid lock. It was our Whirlpool dryer that actually croaked, but we knew the Kitchen Aid washer wasn’t far behind (I had been using it with a broken agitator for years) so we replaced both. So far the new ones are great!
Good luck with yours!

Just curious, for the peas that didn't want the lid lock, may I ask why? We recently had to replace both our washer and dryer (separately, like about a month apart...ugh), but that's another story. Our new washer is a top loader (no agitator) with a lid lock and I guess I just don't see what the issue is with it? Can someone enlighten me please?

We got a speed queen last year. I’m hoping it lives a long life since getting it into our basement laundry room was no joke! 😬

Congrats on the longevity of your prior machine! My mother never had such luck with washing machines (Nor have I!) but she did have a Kitchen Aid dishwasher last her just over 30 years.

I would want one that doesn't lock the lid because I like to open the lid and dip my hand into the water to get a feel for the temperatures in each "temperature" cycle. Like, how warm is the warm cycle. My old top loader from Sears had a very hot warm cycle. Because of this, if I had anything I didn't want to shrink, I would use the cold cycle for those.
Also, if it's like the old style of machines, if you keep the lid open once it has filled with water initially, it will pause in its cycle and then you can let things soak for a while.

Reason I don't like lid lock: MANY times after I begin the washing, I find a sock or ?? that fell out when I was carrying laundry to the washer. If the washer just started, I can open the lid and toss in that item. Lid lock means I have to wait, perhaps a week, until I can put it in the washer.

My newish washer has a lid lock, but if I push the pause button the lock goes off and I can open the lid. Once I'm done checking things/adding laundry I push pause again and it resumes the cycle. Aren't all washers like this? Mine is a top loading washer so maybe that is the difference?

Aren't all washers like this? Mine is a top loading washer so maybe that is the difference? Both my new top-loader and the front-loader that it replaced had this "pause" feature, so I could add extra items. Like others, I'm always dropping a sock or something that I find as I'm walking away and need to throw it in after the cycle has started. I think that's what made me wonder since all my recent washers have had this. Maybe I thought it was standard? Thank you to the peas for answering my curiosity. As for checking the wash temp - good idea - I never actually thought of doing that! My new washer has a "cold", "tap cold", and "cool" wash temp...it might be worth me checking to see how different these are.
