A good friend of mine is purchasing his first house and I'd like to buy/make a nice present. He has been living in apartments for years, so he probably has the basics. I also have to send it across the country so it can't be *too* heavy (I'm willing to spend a little money for a cute idea though).
Homeowners-- anything that you wish you'd had? Any gifts that you particularly liked?
Thanks for any suggestions!

A smallish chest of drawers that can fit in the closet or odd corner.

Something for the yard? Bird feeder, a tree or shrub? Garden art, welcome mat. A whole bunch of mirrors to put in the garden...

You probably won't be able to ship it - but an indoor plant? Received one as a wedding present many many decades ago.....
a gift card to a store like Lowes or similar, or even a supermarket - he may have not been food shopping for a while so as not to pack perishables, old/dated products?

Don't know your price point but imagine that almost anything you order can be shipped to him by the seller, much of it at no charge. (As opposed to your wrapping something and mailing it via USPS or a courier - packages have gotten crazyily expensive!)
What about a BBQ grill for his yard? Nice outdoor chairs?

One of the best housewarming gifts we received was a snow shovel. We were moving from the south to the north so it was something we did not have . We used it a ton! If shipping is an issue then do a gift card to Lowes/ Home Depot or HomeGoods/ Target.

Well, it’s not a “sexy” gift, and I’m not sure what shipping would cost from a home store, but I have a lightweight aluminum step ladder that I use all the time. Change a lightbulb, clean the top of the cabinets, new batteries in the smoke detector—I am always dragging that thing around. But thanks to the lightweight part, it’s easy.
To jazz it up, perhaps you could include a note about “stepping up” into home ownership.

We received mostly gift cards when we bought our townhouse. Bed bath and beyond, Michael’s, Lowe’s, and Home Depot. We also received cash, wine and a beautiful bushel basket with mums and ornamental cabbage plants. We bought in July and had a housewarming party in September.

Does he like to cook? How about a Penzey's spice pack. As the peas know, they have some good ones.

How about a personalized door mat with his initial and the address? Do you have a photo of the house? I have gotten a local artist to do a watercolor of several friend's homes to give as a gift. Usually runs me about $75-100.

Home improvement store gift card. There are ALWAYS things that seem to pop up right after you move in that you end up not having the available cash to change out or fix. Also if it’s a first house, there will be things that he’ll need that he never thought he needed before due to probably not having to do his own outdoor maintenance and yard care. When we moved, we painted my studio space and our laundry room almost immediately and ended up wanting to upgrade the landscaping in front right away too so we spent a bunch of money on paint and plants.

Definitely a gift card to HD or Lowe's. We've been living in houses forever but when we moved into our current home they knew us by name after the first 2 weeks. Going from an apartment to a house there are so many things you have to buy.

I just moved into a house after years of being in a condo. I am stunned by how expensive yard items are. $20-$80 for a hose?! Come on! So anyway, I'd go with a Home Depot gift card for your friend, I'm sure he'd really appreciate it.

A really nice ice cream scoop.
We got one when we got married. I thought it was weird at the time, but we had it for years. Ice cream was for celebrations, and every time we used it, we mentioned the person who gave it to us. Happy time, happy association with the person.

Depends on how much you want to spend. My suggestion would be a Ring doorbell.

I see it would have to be shipped so that probably wouldn't work unless you could order it and they could pick it up at their local Walmart or Home Depot.

Thank you all for the ideas! My head is spinning with ideas. He is a single guy, no kids. I really like practical gifts but he's a bit whimsical. Maybe a ladder and something pretty...

My go to housewarming gift is a nice wooden cutting/cheese board with a cheese knife An engraved wooden cutting board. If it was for a wedding then usually you put The Smiths est 2018 or something like that. For a new house or single person I would put his address est 2018 you could add a house or something else he likes just to fill the space. Then add a gift card to Home Depot or some place if you were wanting to spend more. I like gift and gift card combos.
