In need of the Peas' experience and wisdom! Currently, my (pretty small for a millenial) stack of childhood photos is stored inside a 6x8 wide spine (Studio Calico) album and everything until I turn 18 just about fits in there. But it's just that: one photo after another, no breathing space, no space for basic storytelling. It feels like storage, not an actual holder of treasured memories. The album is at full capacity and can't hold the extra space I need for writing so I need to move to something bigger. I've just finished my 100 Days project way early (on. a. roll.) and am looking into taking on a second project for the remainder of the 100 days. I'd like to get the most from my current creative flow by finally tackling my childhood memories and elevating this basic storage to something a little more satisfying and need Peas who have experience using several formats. Work with/around list for this project: - not a huge amount of photos but still a decent number - basic journaling space needed - most photos are a small standard format (9x13cm or 3.54x5.11in), not an actual 4x6 (meaning I've currently stuck them with repositionable adhesive to white 4x6 cards to fit the pocket page slots), a considerable minority have been cut down from 9x13cm (I made my own photo album when I was around 8 years old and didn't know better back then... unfortunately, no negatives available to reprint them) - small living space = not a lot of storage space (would prefer something not too big but also just the one album) - good quality faux leather cover preferred I was going to buy a 12x12 despite it not being practical for my storage (it would stick out from my IKEA Billy bookcase shelf) and about to hit that 'purchase' button until it dawned on me the same WRMK album in 8.5x11 might do the job (and be far easier to store), especially considering the unusual photo format since I'd be adhering the pictures to white cards anyway. So, now, I'm thoroughly confused and hesitant. Will consider outsider formats as well! What should I know about 12x12 vs 8.5x11? Does anyone have any experience with a similar project with smaller-than-standard size photos and using pocket pages vs "simple" page protectors? As for WRMK: is there a difference in ring diameter between 12x12 and 8.5x11 albums? Finally, what does WRMK's vanilla shade truly look like? Many thanks for any bit of help!

I am a 12x12 traditional scrapper, but started with 8 1/2 x11. Have done a couple of the smaller albums since I switched, but always go back to the larger ones.
Once you are used to the format, the 12 x12 is easy to work with, and you would be able to get more photos/journaling cards on one page, thus making the album less stuffed. And maybe a book of YOUR life deserves a space on top of the cabinet or on your coffee table?
Traditional scrapping would allow you more freedom to move the photos around and fit in some space to "breathe" or to do journaling. Also, the size of the photos is not such a problem: they can be cropped to any size, moved around on the page until they fit, and overlapped if you like, tilted, whatever. And you don't have to go crazy purchasing product--although I admit I [may] have. Some card stock, one or two coordinated collections, maybe a few neutral designs, and the rest is simply icing.
A D-ring binder lets you work on just the pages at hand, without the whole album taking up space. It also allows you to start anywhere, go where the feelings take you, and slip the pages into the binder in order when you are done. You can also decide to create a couple of pages between existing ones, just add a page protector, move one of the existing pages, and boom! space for the extra couple of pages.
Have fun with this project, whatever format you choose.

Can you do a 9 x 12? I only do 12 x 12 (and mini albums).

For you i might say 8.5x11 so it can fit on your bookcase. I personally like 12x12. Good for you that you are on such a roll!

I do mostly 11x8.5. I like things to fit on bookcase. It really doesn't matter, though. Either will work

I only do 8.5x11 anymore. I did my childhood albums 12x12 and I am going to redo. I have scrapped twice as many albums 8.5x11 as I have 12x12.
That is what I recommend. There is plenty of room to be creative in the smaller size.
For a few albums I later decided to make 12x12 I just added my 8.5x11 pages to 12x12 papers and used the borders.

I would probably stick with the 6x8 album, just because they're a lot faster to do than larger ones and maybe go 1-10 and then 10-20 instead. Would that fit? or else I'd go 9x12 but those albums are hard to get hold of cause I think only Studio Calico does them? It's a great size to scrap, I don't know why having just one side 9" instead of 12" makes all the difference but it does! But if you're buying, make sure to get some extra page protectors at the same time cause I do feel SC will stop doing that size soon and we'll all be stuck for buying PP's!

Is it possible that other people have pictures of your childhood? Or that you might come across negatives? Will you want to include drawings and other memorabilia from your past in your album at some point? If so, I think you should go for a 12x12 album. WRMK albums have the same rings, 8.5x11 and 12x12, so you could include 8.5x11 pages in your album and later add newspaper article, drawings, postcards, etc. if you want to. If you're still unsure, start with making the pages in whatever size makes you happy and see in the end which album fits.

Loads to think about. I'm still unsure and undecided but my mind does keep going to 8.5x11 and its practicality. I might order both 12x12 and 8.5x11, get them in my hands, play around with cardstock and photos, then settle on one size and send the other back. @millefeuilles This is already the "full" set of photos after having had family members go through their boxes of old photos and such. Can't complain as some people have even less after a house fire...

sleepingbooty I think Patter does pockets in an 8.5x11 format she might have some ideas then you'd get a little more room for journaling but not a mammoth sized album taking over your bookshelf! and woot for finishing your 100 Day Project early!!

Thanks caspad. Yes, I do 8 1/2 x 11 pocket pages and love them. 12x12 is just way too big to hold and look at, store, everything. The 8 1/2 x 11 is perfect. I use the WRMK albums and some of their pages along with Hobby Lobby pages, and even baseball card holder pages. Works great. I also use a 6x12 page that I cut down to use for special things that I might focus on within a week. Here are a couple sample pages, and I hope it helps.

Thank you, caspad and Patter . I could see adding some pocket pages to an 8.5x11 album as well to break down the monotony of full page after full page! Off to see if those configurations are available from an online European SB store.

Or, you could come to my place and weight in your options. Also, congratulations for being on a roll! (I'm slightly jealous! )

(I'm slightly jealous! ) Ugh, don't get me started on return shipping: I'm trying to find what I need on amazon.fr to avoid the issue. But they only have a few 12x12 WRMK albums in stock. They offer a black (but I wanted a vanilla ooooone, waaah! #crybaby) 8.5x11 for a very reasonable price (23.99€) but it's temporarily out of stock. I'll probably order that one and see how fast they can ship it after all. I'm on fiyah! Catching up for missing out on crafting the first four months of the year, I think. Want me to mail you some crafty vibes?

Personally I've only ever scrapped 12x12. But that is because I have minimum 6 photos on a double layout. Usual 8 to 10. And that will still be just 5% of all the photos I took on that kids birthday.
I would go through the photos and sort them into stories. I.e those 2 are about my 2nd birthday. That 1 is about my relationship with dad. Those are summer 1976 pictures. Then when you know how many stories you have and how many pictures you have with each, you will find it easier to choose.
I watch Inky Quill and love her one or two photo 11x8.5 layouts. So if I had lots of stories with small amounts of photos I would go with the smaller format.

I'll definitely divide it up into stories, how much space I need to tell the story, how many photos (and which size they are). Thanks for sharing! I'll get to it this week.

i have no experience with the WRMK albums (of any size), but do scrap 8.5x11 so i'm just giving a shout out because it's an awesome size i have also used baseball card protectors in the past, but i have a few divided protectors from WRMK in 8.5x11 and also some 9x12 from bazzill called lickety slippers (i would say not their most brilliant choice of names).

I love love love how DebbiT (former pea, not sure if she made her way over here) tells a story. Her albums are 8x8. I remember her saying how she had few childhood photos. Her layouts have so much movement! She's used the same photo to tell more than one story. Here's a link to her blog with the tag childhood memories. debbitscraps.blogspot.com/search/label/Childhood%20Memories
