UPDATE: Thanks to everyone! Sorry for the delayed response, busy with recovery and stuff. All is well. The Benadryl seems to help, 6-8 more weeks and then I can lose the cast. I hope everyone is having a nice weekend and happy almost Mother’s Day ************************************************************* Hi Peas! I’ve been away from the boards for a while, but I’m back hoping someone has advice for me Jupiter, the puppy, tripped me down the stairs. My doctor wants to do surgery ASAP as she says it is a “trauma event” (whatever that means) of course, my insurance doesn’t give a rats ass and so I am in limbo until Thursday or Friday. I have on a plaster splint until then and JEEZ LOUISE the itching is driving me bonkers. Any Peas have advice? I saw on google that a hair dryer can help. Of course, the dryer is upstairs and I’m home alone until tonight so I can’t get it. Thanks in advance!! Here is a picture of the accused, since we’re gonna have to forgive him Jupiter is the one in middle. Puppy is going to be a BIG boy

Nothing helps the itching. But I was in 8th grade when I had a cast and everyone just told me to deal with it. If your over the edge you can scratch with a knitting needle, but that’s probably not medically advised?
I had a friend who swore by spraying vodka in to the edges of her cast ( open toe open heel ) but I think she swigged as much as she sprayed to be honest.
Hope you feel better soon

Aah - your pups are so cute. The best think that worked for me when I had itching inside my cast was a good old fashioned ruler - just the right thickness for getting in there and scratching

What about taking Benadryl. Would that help? Or a Xanax

I don't have an answer but your dogs are so cute!
Also, I know of many people that have broken wrists while tripping over their dogs. Something I never thought of when I was younger but I am always looking down now-especially when I'm making dinner.
And we have three black cats who sometimes like to lay on the black part of our multi-color rug which isn't safe for any of us!
ETA--How in the world did you get three dogs to look in the camera at the same time???

DD broke her leg and had surgery on it in November. She was in a cast for 6 weeks. Luckily she didn't get too itchy, but when she did, the hair dryer trick didn't work for her. And, if I'm reading correctly, your injury is very recent--adding heat might not be good for it at this point if you're still having swelling. Does it still itch if you put ice on it?
What did work for DD to stop the itching was vibration. She discovered this from going to the movies with recliners that add sound and vibration to enhance your experience, LOL. She would also knock on her cast, which gave me fits!
I hope you find something that works for you and wish you a speedy recovery!!

Your dogs are all amazingly cute!
Casts in the summer are the worst. The itching is nuts. I second using a knitting needle or ruler to scratch if you can reach the spot. I hope that the surgery goes well and that you mend quickly.

love the dogs--but ALL of them have that GUILTY look on their faces!! Sorry you are itching. Try to keep your leg from swelling--elevate, ice, and even a fan on your leg--might help

I broke my wrist a few years ago and the doctor was adamant about not sticking stuff down the cast.. YEAH RIGHT.. about 3 days later... I stuck whatever I could to stop the itching.. I was very very careful though and was avoiding 'scratching' too hard.. to cause damage.. I was gentle. I had a back scratcher with a skinny wooden handle that I used.. it was the best.

When I had a cast on my arm I used a drinking straw to scratch an itch. Worked perfectly!

Hair dryer should work. It's moisture in between the cast and your skin that is causing the itching. Don't stick anything down there, you could cause an infection if you break your skin. You can use the cool setting on the hair dryer, the point is to dry it out, not necessarily get it hot.

When I had a cast on my arm I used a drinking straw to scratch an itch. Worked perfectly! Same here. Edge wasn’t sharp enough to do any damage but it calmed the itch. The worst was when I was at a baseball game and a bee went down my arm. I killed it with the straw.

I used a knitting needle when I was in a cast. It worked beautifully with no chance of breaking skin, causing infection, etc. I kept it with me at all times, LOL!

Put metal knitting needles in the fridge and then scratched. I know it's bad. I had a cast for 3 months. IF YOU HAD SURGERY DISREGARD!
