Ended up in the ER Sunday night. Sent me home with pain meds but I’m still having a rough time. Trying to drink extra fluids but dealing with nausea and vomiting too. Had this 20 years ago, but passed it within a couple hours. I am miserable and missing work.

Be very sure you CAN pass it. Did they do an X-ray to be sure that it isn't too big to pass? I have had several (and in fact am having the "blast' surgery next week to get rid of one that is forming). Most passed OK, but one was so dreadful I thought I would die and it wouldn't quit. I finally went to ER only to be told that there was no way it could have passed due to size. Not trying to scare you, but if that is the case, they will have to take care of it in the hospital. Otherwise--water, water, water.

If they didn't give you anything for nausea, I would be on the phone to the doctor this morning. DH has had stones with vomit inducing pain before, and it just adds insult to injury. You need to stay hydrated to try and flush it out.
Did they refer you to urology? DH was sent home from the ER to pass his very first one... it didn't pass and the urologist took one look at the films and said there was no way he could pass it. It was too big and lodged in the ureter causing an obstruction. He had emergency surgery that same day. His doctor is also a fan of using flomax to help with the process, which I am not sure ER docs routinely do. Hope you get some relief soon!

The only way my DH has ever been able to pass them is in the hospital with an i.v. and pain meds. The fluids helps push it along and the pain meds, plus nausea meds, help him deal with it until it does pass. We've tried to stay home with pain meds and drinking tons of fluids but he's never had any luck that way. From now on I just take him straight to the ER so that he can get what he needs.

My DH passed his #24 stone last Friday AM.
ER should have given you something for nausea as well as pain.
Drink, drink, drink some more to get the thing flushed out. DH also drinks cranberry juice as part of the process to try to help prevent infection.
This last one took 3.5 days to pass, but usually he passes his within 24 hours of the initial pains.
It was his largest stone---almost 3/16"
Follow up with physician to make sure no infection afterwards.

Yea, make sure you have urology on board. That makes all the difference. I drank lots of lemonade, and heating pad. Had lithotripsy (sound waves to crush it), didn't work. Then they had to go up and get it. It's just Out pt surgery though, then a stent. Fun times. NOT!! hope it goes fast for you.

You should have been given some pain and nausea meds. I prescribe toradol, zofran and also give flomax and tell patients to drink beer if that like it. Of course, lots of water helps to keep the kidneys flushed. I know a lot of people also have luck passing a stone with running or really brisk walking.
Did you have a CT scan? That's the gold standard for diagnosis.

You should have been given some pain and nausea meds. I prescribe toradol, zofran and also give flomax and tell patients to drink beer if that like it. Of course, lots of water helps to keep the kidneys flushed. I know a lot of people also have luck passing a stone with running or really brisk walking. Did you have a CT scan? That's the gold standard for diagnosis. Is there something about beer that makes it helpful? I had a kidney stone (thankfully small enough to pass) last year and it was worse than when I delivered my 8+ lb baby. Luckily I did get pain meds and nausea meds (only advil for pain but it worked out) but i have more stones in there and am waiting for the day they decide to start trying to come out. |

Is this the one where they put you in a tub and then hit the spot with a beam? Lithotripsy is sound waves. I was out, light sedation. On a table when it was done. I felt nothing. There can be bruising. My stone was stuck in the bend of the ureter. |

I had never heard of it involving a tub 🤔 But DH has had quite a few of them using the cushion method. Thanks peas! I did have a ct scan, the stone was 5mm, in the right ureter close to the bladder. I was given Percocet, works for 3 hours and zofran, which had me vomiting right after I took it.
A friend told me about the beer but I wasn’t sure that was a good idea. Will have one tomorrow.
I’m trying to drink as much as I can, will try lemonade tomorrow too.

5mms is a good sized stone, but should be passable. I strongly recommend a urologist. Many times they can keep you out of the ER.
I love the beer idea, I can see, for me, that getting a little drunk would probably make the process better, and nothing makes me pee like beer does.
