On one radio station I heard yanny the whole time. Then flipped to another station and heard laurel loud and clear. So maybe they are pranking us lol!

This morning all I heard was Yanny (rhymes with fanny). It was a higher pitched voice. Tried it on computer, phone and phone with headphones. Heard the same thing.
My co-worker said she heard Laurel but when she walked into the other room, she could hear Yanny.
I listened again and heard only Laurel. So then I did the same thing as co-worker. Walked slightly away and I could hear BOTH words, playing one after another. Different voices. So the pitch definitely has something to do with it. Must be when you are certain distances away, you ears hear the other pitch.

have you guys listened to any of the pitch-adjusted ones? when the pitch is bumped up I can hear yanny. when it's only a little bit up I can hear a garbled version of both. when it's regular, I still hear laurel. an article I read said it has to do with how your brain interprets the frequency.

I hear both at the same time. Yanny is said in a high pitched more tinny sounding voice. Laurel is said at the same time in a lower and more resonant voice.

It's laurel with the clearest pronunciation possible. How could you get yanny from that?

I hear “erry “. No J, N, or L sounds at all.

I hear yanny in an androgynous sounding voice on my phone, and laurel in a mans voice when I hear it on TV. DS hears yanny on both.

The Yanny kind of sounds like ET. I think it actually is ET trying to say El-I-ot.

I was using headphones and heard Laurel very plainly. When I took off left headphone and it was above my ear but not on it, I heard Yanny.

I haven't read all the replies, so apologies if I'm repeating what other people have said.
When I first heard it I heard Yanny, high and whispery. The second time I heard Laurel, in a man's voice, low and boomy. After that first time I could only hear Laurel, other than a whispery sound at the end.
I decided that this is about frequency. My high frequency hearing is rubbish but I could hear Yanny, so it's not just about hearing - it must be our brains editing stuff out as well. I have no idea why though. It's interesting, isn't it?

I hear “erry “. No J, N, or L sounds at all. At the very end, I hear the "el" sound overlapping the erry. DH thinks I'm nuts.

Here is what my daughter thinks: they are saying two words at once at high and low frequencies and we can only process one at a time. "Old" people (that means me, lol) tend to hear laurel, she says, per the responses she's seen. She hears yammy, not yanny, btw. At the same time I can only hear laurel. After that experiment I noticed that the constant ringing in my ears had stopped. It only stopped for a few minutes, but I think it's significant that it happens every time I listen to this thing.
And now DD says it gave her a headache. I'm waiting to see what my husband hears, his hearing isn't very good.

I was listening to npr today, they played the clip 3 different times. First and last time I heard Laurel, second time I heard Yanny. They were not adjusted and each time the hosts apparently heard the same thing, the girl heard Laurel and the boy heard Yanny.

The local news just covered this story. I heard Laurel, again, when they played the audio. But then he slowed down the audio and then I heard Yanny. The newscaster interviewed an ear specialist and she said our ears hear tones differently.

I only hear Laurel. I hear that L sound very clearly. I keep trying to hear Yanny but I couldn't until I tried that link that mrssmith provided. Now I can hear Yanny only when I move the lever towards the right.

When I did this yesterday, I only heard Laurel and thought you Yanny’s were crazy. Now I’m sitting on my deck with my neighbour’s weed whacker going full on and into my third beer and all I hear is Yanny!! So weird
