We are doing the Grandest of the Grand Canyon trip in September and was wondering if anyone could give me some idea(s) of what to expect and share any tips for maximizing the experience (like how is the food, how much free time do you really have...stuff like that). We've done ocean cruises before, but an all inclusive train tour is a whole new ballgame for us.
We leave out of Chicago (Union Station), and I have some fun stuff planned for our time in the city (a day and a half). I've been to Chicago several times before, but my husband hasn't so I kind of geared our activities towards his interests.

The Historic Downtown in Flagstaff is neat. I highly recommend The Lumberyard - we were told the food is awesome but I can attest that the beer is great! All we did in Winslow was take pictures on the corner and visit a few souvenir shops.

As a child and teen I traveled both the USA and Canada by rail a few times. Though we weren't on a tour. It was a wonderful way to see both countries. We always had a suite, which was just a cabin w/beds. The food was good and their were games to play and an exceptional view. My only complaint was the lack of showers. I don't know if that's changed.

Did you purchase the sleeper car option or just going coach? I would HIGHLY recommend going sleeper class. It is so much more comfortable. I would recommend a roomette. You get two bunk beds, that fold back up to seats. Coach class isn't awful - but it so much nicer to be able to lay down and sleep. Do not expect the Orient Express. AMTRAK is getting really tired. I have enjoyed my trips on the train, but don't expect first class service. It can vary from very nice, to down right surly at times. If you are in coach class - no service. I see that your trip includes meals on the train. I have found train food to be decent to very good. But as the years go on, the quality has greatly deteriorated. Surprisingly one of the best meals is a steak. I have always gotten a good steak. Breakfast is usually decent too. Here is a link to the AMTRAK Southwest Chief menu www.amtrak.com/content/dam/projects/dotcom/english/public/documents/menus/routes/Southwest-Chief-Dining-Car-Menu-0917.pdf
