My daughter is having a "dinner party" for her AP Government class...they were tasked with researching a famous politician and she chose Ben Carson. He's from Michigan but she can't figure out what to bring that would be fairly simple and inexpensive.
Any good ideas?

I always associate Michigan with cherries. Cherry Vanilla Crisp is super easy and delicious. Use frozen cherries - they are cheaper and easier to work with instead of pitting 6 cups of fresh cherries. Or she could bring in Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia (because Ben is in the name! haha)

Great suggestions!
Faygo, cherries, and pasties were the first thing I associated with Michigan.

Vernors Cherries-fruit, pies, jam, whatever. Michigan people love cherries. Pasties. These are surprisingly good. Corn! We have tons of awesome sweet corn here in the summer. Our neighborhood is surrounded by corn fields. It’s amazing. 😁

Fudge, or "Bumpy Cake" - there is a bakery called Sanders that stocks them frozen some places (I'm in Ohio, so not sure how common that is elsewhere). Basically a ho-ho sheet cake!

Faygo Vernors Better made chips Schulers cheese I have family in Oregon that were raised in Michigan. Anytime they come to visit, they get several 12 packs of Vernors and a couple of the biggest schulers cheese they can get. If you can't get any of these in your area, I'm sure the peas will help. Or check out Grand traverse City pies. They ship! gtpie.com/

Thanks for all the ideas ladies! I knew I could count on the peas! The "dinner" is Thursday-last day of school is Friday so there's no time to order anything authentic. I'm not sure if I can find some of the specialty foods specific to Michigan, but I love the cherries/blueberries/apples idea! Easy peasy and nutritious! Thanks so much!

Maybe focus on the vegetarian aspect of his faith--being Seventh Day Adventist and take it from that direction rather than where he's from? Are there any traditional Seventh Day Adventist recipes? I'm sure there must be something...

I'm sure there must be something... Then buy regular corn flakes or grape nuts (Post, who was also a little nuts). JH Kellogg was a Seventh Day Adventist. You get a Michigan food and a Ben Carson connection. ETA: SDAC was founded in Battle Creek, btw.

I was thinking it was founded in upstate New York (the "burned over district" of the Second Great Awakening), but I guess not. For the project, I'm sure there's some sort of rice krispie treat type thing that could be made out of corn flakes.

More Michigan knowledge! I lived in Battle Creek for a short time as a child and never knew any of this. I hope these things are taught in schools now.
