She died in her sleep yesterday and was 46 years old. Through her, so much was learned about the gorillas and their ability to communicate with humans. Koko the Gorilla

there was a scene in the Mr. Rogers movie (I saw it last weekend) where he visited Koko; it was really touching-- she gave him a big hug and told him she loved him. I hadn't thought about her in years... eta: I just read the linked story and watched the video of her visit with Robin Williams-- We give animals (heck, other humans, too) so much less credit than they deserve-- we really AREN'T all that different from any other living organism on this earth. I think we need to remember that.

I saw that PBS special about Koko. She was truly amazing and so were her human helpers. I'm glad she went peacefully and without pain or fear.

She was such a beautiful soul. I loved reading about her kitten, and remembered her meeting Mr Rogers. The two of them together was amazing. They just got each other instantly. Animals understand far more than we give them credit.

RIP beautiful Koko. I'm sorry you lived your life as an experiment. It wasn't fair but you taught us a lot. You were one of the reasons I was *that* kid whose favourite animal was the gorilla (still is), not the horse or the dolphin. May you rest with ice-creams and kittens now. And may your passing be a reminder that your species, our direct cousins, desperately needs our attention and help.
If you have a dollar to spare and want to do some good with it today, please think of giving a little something to a one of the several major organisations dealing with gorilla preservation, particularly the extremely endangered mountain gorillas (Koko was a lowland gorilla) in the Congo basin. The Virunga National Park puts in an incredible effort to save the last specimens through many actions, including the very dangerous anti-poaching patrols (which can end in tragedy, alas). The WWF has wonderful Adopt a Gorilla (lowland) pack which makes a beautiful gift for children. The Dian Fossey fund also takes donations and does the Adopt a Gorilla (mountain) project.

this is the first story I saw after waking up this morning. Not the way I'd like to start my day. She's been in my heart for more years than I can remember.

I've been following Koko's story since I first read about her in National Geographic in the 1970's. Penny, her teacher/caregiver has been with her from the very beginning up until the end and devoted her life to teaching and caring for Koko. While I would have preferred that Koko remain free she did teach us a lot about the intelligence of gorillas and how much closer they are to us than many of us had previously thought.
I missed the PBS special on Koko. I would have loved to have seen that. I'm glad she passed in her sleep without pain or fear. She was very sweet, loving and kind. She showed us the depth of emotion and intelligence in gorillas and how very close they are to us.
