"I literally....." Literally? Sorry....I literally say this all the time. LOL ETA: sometimes I do mix it up and use legit instead. Awful, I know.

I know this doesn't fit exactly with the topic of conversational phrases that drive us crazy, but "boots on the ground" is getting very old very quickly.

"Like" Usually said by teenagers. I was listening to the news the other day and they were interviewing some local college students and every one of them did the "like" example. "Like we were all sitting in class and like the sirens came on and like the teacher said every leave, and like we all went outside and like we were so scared"

"Like we were all sitting in class and like the sirens came on and like the teacher said every leave, and like we all went outside and like we were so scared" It's funny you say this...I sometimes help a family member correct papers and I find the students use "like" when they write with great regularity. I make a lot of notes to remind the kids to not use slang, and to be careful to not write like they speak. I agree with a lot of what has already been said, with a heavy emphasis on "my bad." That one is like nails on a chalk board to me. Oh, and the ever present "I seen." That's probably more of a grammar beef, but "I seen" makes me want to run out of the room screaming "No, it is "I saw" or "I have seen" NEVERNEVERNEVER "I seen." LOL

"The onus is on ________" The word onus drives me up the wall. It is one letter away from anus. This made me LOL.

Not stupid, but annoying! Place an order for one item. One hamburger, that will be all, thank you. Would you like to make it a combo? No Would you like fries? No. Would you like a drink? No. Would you like a cookie(or other dessert item)? No. Just so you know they have to ask usually for those upsells. It isn't to be annoying, just part of the job. Yup. And it's annoying for the person working who has to try to upsell to you. They know you don't want it. They know you don't wanna hear it. They have to ask anyway or risk losing their job.

"It is what it is." I don't like this phrase either, but have found myself saying it quite a bit lately when talking about why my dh and I are (hopefully temporarily) separating. I don't want to get into it in details with most people, and using the phrase kinda works for me. So for now I will keep using it while I keep hating it. (((hugs)))

Ha! I am rereading this thread with the TV on in the background and the very thing I complained about last night came on in a promo for The View: blah blah blah "it's going to be a game changer" Ugh. I can't escape it!

Bugs me when people says they will "reach out" to someone instead of saying call/email/talk to them. You must have really long arms!
Just sayin'

Two that have really bugged me lately are game-changer and hack. Every stupid tip and trick is now called a hack. Even Martha Stewart's people use it in her social media. Usually someone will respond and say it's "genius. " That bugs me, too, so I guess that's three things that annoy me of late! Game changer is so overused in the business world and by news outlets. Just stop! My BIL said his new girlfriend (that he plans to propose to soon) is a "game changer." He's a very "business-y" type too.

I hang out with a bunch of teenagers regularly, and sometimes I think if I hear or see the word "bae" one more time, I will stab someone. Really, it makes me homicidal... I don't even know what that means! I have two teenagers that have been using this a lot lately. I think it's equivalent to "my peeps" or "my people." 14 yo DS used it on FB to describe hanging out with friends (girls) at the mall the other day. 17 yo DD uses it too in a similar way.

I hate hearing "Boys will be boys"...What the heck? No,just because they are boys doesn't give them permission to do whatever it was they just did.

Add "Bra", and "wrecked". Why yes, I am surrounded by teenage boys. I'm only half way through the thread, but can will add mine: Drill down... As if... I might slap someone if they told me they had to "noodle" anything. ETA "Hack", definitely. Chalk painting is not a hack. mama2three, thank you for laughs this morning, fun thread!

'In and of itself'. What does that even mean? Hate that phrase.
And the newscasters favourite: 'in terms of'. It is virtually always a completely unnecessary phrase, and one which some people just cannot stop using in very possible sentence. Examples are: ' in terms of the weather, we are looking at rain over the weekend', ’in terms of traffic, the roads will be busy on the holiday Monday'.
My kids' headmaster could barely utter a sentence without saying 'in terms of'. It used to amuse me to sit through assemblies and meetings he was speaking at, making a tally mark each time he said it, then calculating his 'in terms of' rate. Last time it was once every 83 seconds. Every now and again, he'd do a multiple...'in terms of pupils, in terms of teachers, in terms of resources, we are on target blah blah blah'...three in one sentence really bumped his rate up!
