I was listening to a local radio show on the way home from work last night, and they had people calling in about the stupid phrases people use that others find annoying. I was laughing so hard because I hear nearly all of them every day at work from one supervisor, and it has gotten to the point where everyone teases him about the stupid phrases. Here are the most common ones that drive me crazy, but I'm sure I'll recall others:
Circle back Get your ducks in a row At the end of the day
What do you hear all the time that drives you nuts?

At work, on the overhead: "Sharla, YOU HAVE A TELEPHONE CALL ON line 1." All the bolded stuff is unnecessary. Of course it's a call, on the telephone. Just say "Sharla, Line 1" Also, the filler words a guy uses at work, "Well, now... you know... I mean... " starts so many of his sentences. In that order. "Well.. Now... You know... I mean..." AHHHHHhhhhh!!

I know right (I just don't understand this phrase. I know they are agreeing with what I said but why do they say right after agreeing.)
My bad

Not stupid, but annoying!
Place an order for one item. One hamburger, that will be all, thank you.
Would you like to make it a combo? No Would you like fries? No. Would you like a drink? No. Would you like a cookie(or other dessert item)? No.

I can't stand that one! Drives me bonkers- it is such a pointless thing to say. ETA: "Do me a solid." Hate it.

The Sales Manager at my work often says "net / net". I wasn't really sure what he meant by it so I googled it. This is what came up in Urban Dictionary: Another thing he says is "We can't boil the ocean."

Looking at something "on a granular level." Yeah... I get that one too. The first time a lawyer asked me to be more granular I had no idea what he meant!

We totally make fun of a guy at work with an "IIWII" tally on the white board. It took him about three months to figure it out.

I know right (I just don't understand this phrase. I know they are agreeing with what I said but why do they say right after agreeing.) My bad There is a mom I see occasionally through scouts. She says "I know that's right" all the time. No matter what the comment is that she is responding to. I think it's the only thing she ever says! drives me bonkers.

The word onus drives me up the wall. It is one letter away from anus.

I can't stand "prolly" I'm not 13 and neither are you...go the extra mile and add in those two extra letters so you don't look like an idiot. I have an irrationally strong reaction to it-in case that wasn't clear.

I so need this post.....
I have recently joined the workforce and have been hearing this expression/phrase an awful lot....
"do what?"
I guess I know what it means...but it isn't really a thing is it? It seems to me that is used instead of excuse me?, pardon me?, what?, sorry, I didn't hear/understand you?
Am I nuts??

"At this time" or "At this moment in time." "At that point" or "At that point in time."
We have perfectly good one syllable words, instead: "Now." "Then."

Opine
That's another one that drives me insane. "I would like to opine", "Can you opine on this topic?"
I haven't heard "do what?" People get so sloppy in their English phrasing these days. I get ribbed at work for using "as if" or "as though" instead of "like". Some people think I'm using those phrases to try to seem more educated than they are (no, just not as lazy, and I don't appreciate the "like disease" that seems to affect so many these days). The teens and young new hires fresh out of school that I know are the worst. "Like" seems to be every 3rd or 4th word out of their mouths. Followed by "my bad" which just sounds so stupid.

(sorry my quoting is bad) I've heard this and said this as well...I think it is regional? south? I do think that it is used when you don't catch something that is said and you are asking for clarification..in a casual environment of course lol

I don't know that it's a stupid phrase, but my spine sure seizes up when I hear one adult tell other adults that their pet "crossed rainbow bridge". I think that when a pet dies, it's ok, even preferable, to come right out and say that to adults and children alike. Hey, they're gonna know, right?
