This recipe reminds me of the pistachio pudding "Watergate Salad" I don't have time to google it right now, but pistachio pudding mix, cool whip, mini marshmallows, pineapple, pecans, and probably other stuff! I know people who still have this for Thanksgiving and Christmas (not my family!).

Grandma Ina made Cherry Jello Salad every holiday. It was cherry jello, cherry pie filling, and Cool Whip on top. Yum! Grandma Marvyn made an orange salad with creamed cottage cheese, orange jello, and mandarin oranges. So good!

I enjoy a jello dessert I make a few times a year:
large cherry jello box can of whole berry cranberry sauce 1/2 cup of fizzy softdrink like Squirt, 7-up, Sprite, etc.
I dissolve the jello with 2 cups boiling water. Stir/whisk in the can of cranberry sauce until the jelly bits are dissolved. Add the 1/2 cup softdrink and 1 1/4 cups of water and mix well. Chill.
This can be made with cherry, strawberry, raspberry, orange or lemon jello. Cherry is my favorite though.

When you say salad, do you mean you eat it with lettuce and stuff? Well, decades ago, you might get served a square of Jello salad on a lettuce leaf, but generally, no, no typical salad ingredients are involved in gelatin-based salads. Back in the day you might come across shredded carrots or cabbage in gelatin but I think that's mostly extinct. I truly don't know how gelatin dishes came to be called salads, but I think the previous poster who referred to "composed" dishes/salads is probably on the right track. I think when people realized that this newly popular Jello was perfect for arranging vegetables, fruits, and or meats, there was no looking back!

My Mom had a Tupperware mold that was made just for jello salads. It was a 2 piece ring that separated the inner circle from the circular shape/ outer circle of the mold as well as having a lid that snapped over both halves for transport. It made for easier unfolding, though there was the occasional break. It was a little smaller than a bundtpan. It was green plastic. She often made a lime jello marshmallow pineapple mold. We called it green junk. It never came out the same two times in a row. My mom had that green Tupperware mold, we tried every Christmas and I don’t think ever got it to come out right!

I grew up on some of these "salads." One of my favorites was always called A & P Salad by our family as the recipe came from he deli at that grocery store. It has strawberry jello (just the powder mixed in --not pre-dissolved in water), crushed pineapple, cool whip, and cottage cheese. Mix and refrigerate until it sets. I used to looovvvveee that stuff.
I'll admit I made an old-fashioned "pear salad" for dinner last night. Just pear halves topped with shredded sharp cheddar cheese and blob of mayonnaise. It was my 76-year-old father-in-law's birthday. Ironically, he's on a keto diet so I also a keto chocolate cake with peanut butter icing. It's all a little disconnected for sure, but... hey. You ought to get what you want for your birthday, right?

Brings back memories reading this thread. I haven't seen jello salad in years. When I was a kid in the 60s-70s, all my mom's friends served various jello salads at luncheons, dinners, potlucks. All the time. I especially remember pretzel jello that was more of a dessert with red jello, pretzels, cool whip and strawberries. Made that a lot as a kid.
There was an epic jello salad thread on the old board, complete with pictures. I think we managed to save most of it here on the pea history board if anyone is looking for jello salad inspiration-- or just laughs!

Mystie , how was it?? The recipe sounds good, but I've never had a Jello salad that has sour cream as an ingredient (at least not to my knowledge, anyway). I grew up in small town NW Illinois, and my family heritage is Swedish and German. Jello salads were a MUST at any holiday get-together. Every Christmas the one my mom made was some sort of 'fluff' salad that had mini marshmallows, cool whip (?) and pineapple. It was served frozen, and it MUST be served in the yellow rectangular Pyrex dish; nothing else will do. (that's the only thing I ever remember being served in that dish, actually, lol.) It might have had sour cream in; I'll have to ask her, if I don't already have the recipe. I will admit a nostalgic fondness for a jello 'salad' still, even now. My mom's staples were: strawberry jello with banana slices (which I did NOT like), green jello with shredded carrots, or green jello with pineapple tidbits. If I make one now, it's usually orange jello with mandarin orange slices, with a big dollop of Cool Whip on top. One other recipe we occasionally had at Christmas was a bit more involved; it was called Broken Glass Torte. Basically it used three or four different colors of jello, mixed up in 8x8 pans to solidify. Once they're set, you put a graham cracker crust in a larger (9x13?) pan... you cut the already-set colored jello into pieces, gently mix it into a mixture (of sour cream and cool whip, maybe?) then put the jello mixture into the larger pan. When you cut it into slices, it looks like a stained glass window. ahhh, the memories. (now I want jello with fruit!)

crimsoncat05 It was good! I actually just finished a bowl! The sour cream with marshmallows was a good match for the Jello, it wasn't too sweet. Once I got over expecting it to taste like Cool Whip, I quite liked it. We had a lot of Jello dishes at holidays and church dinners, too. My mom often made one with orange Jello with shredded carrots and crushed pineapple. Nowadays when I have Jello, it usually tastes too sweet to me, but it's a fun memory!

I’m going to try this! Sorry for bumping an old thread but I can’t be the only one looking for a nostalgic recipe.

OMG, I would go full fatass on my auntie's 1970s lime jello salad. It was made with lime jello, crushed pineapple, 7 up, coconut, chopped nuts, and cottage cheese maybe? I loved it back in the day. Same, but without the cottage cheese. And this sounds gross, but there was a “sauce” that went with it made with Miracle Whip and maraschino cherry juice. I hate to say it, but it was so good and a hit at every holiday.

Ok I have to chime in with my mom's "golden glow salad".. showed up for holiday meals on a piece of lettuce.
lemon jello, shredded carrots and crushed pineapple. I still like it.

I couldn't find the recipe so I asked stepmom for it. She sent me this picture. OMG, there's port wine in it, too! I had forgotten. No wonder it tastes like "adult" jello. Sorry it's not super easy to read but it's all there. Ask me if anything isn't clear. Click on thumbnail for full size. I’m not seeing anything to click on but it sounds like the one I posted on the other thread. You can use port or fruit juice snd I have always used apple juice. Curious if it’s the same recipe. ETA. I didn’t realize this was an old thread. I wonder if it’s the same recipe though.
