I promise I won't flog my blog too much but I got a burst of energy this evening and made a raspberry Jello salad from my great-aunt Carrie's recipe box, the contents of which I am slowly sharing on my vintage recipe blog. So if you need one more Fourth of July salad, I've got you covered. Red Raspberry SaladWe haven't tried it yet...it has to set up in the fridge overnight, so we'll be having it for lunch tomorrow. I'll update with the verdict later.

I'm always prepared to be horrified when I see the phrase "vintage Jello" but that salad doesn't look bad! Definitely report back.

My Mom had a Tupperware mold that was made just for jello salads. It was a 2 piece ring that separated the inner circle from the circular shape/ outer circle of the mold as well as having a lid that snapped over both halves for transport. It made for easier unfolding, though there was the occasional break. It was a little smaller than a bundtpan. It was green plastic. She often made a lime jello marshmallow pineapple mold. We called it green junk. It never came out the same two times in a row.

OMG, I would go full fatass on my auntie's 1970s lime jello salad. It was made with lime jello, crushed pineapple, 7 up, coconut, chopped nuts, and cottage cheese maybe? I loved it back in the day.

I did the raspberry jello, cool whip, marshmallows dessert jello salad a couple of weeks ago for a potluck. It was at a dog agility trial where many/most of the people are in shape and eat well. It went over really well and people enjoyed indulging in a little nostalgia

That makes me think of church potluck dinners...I think one of those ladies must have brought something similar every time. I specifically remember the lime Jello, pineapple, cottage cheese combo. Church potlucks were a Jello salad heaven...or hell, depending on your point of view!

My stepmother makes a cranberry/jello/nuts/cream cheese thing at the holidays that is delish and doesn't feel vintagey at all. I guess it's not very sweet. And no marshmallows. I'm going to try this one, thanks.

Maybe it’s because I was born in 1951, but I still love jello salad. I have a good one that uses cheese and people scarf it up. Thanks for posting this. My mom must have read that same newspaper! I’m going to try it.

I think it sounds great. We rarely have a family dinner that doesn't include a Jell-o salad.
And remember, "There's always room for Jell-o".

That looks yummmmyyy!!! I'm sure the sour cream adds a nice richness, and marshmallows: yum! I'd like to make it sometime! OMG, I would go full fatass on my auntie's 1970s lime jello salad. I've never heard that before......thanks for making me laugh!

That looks similar to something my grandmother made. I'll have to try it some other time. Pistachio fluff is on the menu for tomorrow.

My BFF and I make a lime jello, cream cheese, pineapple concoction every year for thanksgiving that we have deemed “old church lady jello” that reminds us of the jello salads of the late 70s church potlucks. Damn if it isn’t delicious. At my house only my mom and me will touch it! Lol

Anybody else remember pink fluff or pink salad? Lime jello salad was a staple at family gatherings on my dad's side of the family, but pink salad was my maternal auntie's specialty.
It was cool whip, cherry pie filling, canned mandarin oranges, mini marshmallows, crushed pineapple, and maybe chopped nuts? There was always a huge bowl of it on the dessert table.
I miss it only slightly less than lime jello salad.

OMG, there's port wine in it, too! I had forgotten. No wonder it tastes like "adult" jello. Sorry it's not super easy to read but it's all there. Ask me if anything isn't clear. That actually looks pretty good. I don't think I will ever be able to forgive the peas for making me aware that jello with vegetables is a thing. Can't unknow.

My aunt makes this. We call it "The Big Green" because she always brings a huge bowl of it. It's not a family function without The Big Green. I remember living hours away from home when I was pregnant with my second and all I could think about was The Big Green...so I had to call my aunt to get the recipe. I ate the entire thing myself. LOL

When you say salad, do you mean you eat it with lettuce and stuff?

Fascinating. I admit to being puzzled about the use of the word 'salad' in these recipes. I think the word salad is being used as a "composed dish, served cold" or some similar wording. Think chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad, macaroni salad, potato salad, pasta salad, etc. That said, if I didn't know about Jell-o salad I would think yuck, until the first bite.
