So, I had this strange bruise under my toenail of my big toe. Yesterday my sister, who has a nail salon, sees this and says, 'RJVL, you need to have this checked out. I don't want to scare you, but in very rare cases, this is melanoma'.
Later in the day I google 'toenail melanoma', and after reading around for 30 minutes, I am absolutely convinced that the only solution is to amputate my leg by the knee and I am already mourning the loss of my leg but try to remain happy about my survival chances.
I kid you not.
Today, I went to the doctor. <<UNEXPECTED PLOT TWIST COMING> It's nothing  . Just a bruise from running too much. It'll grow out in time. Please tell me I'm not the only one who does this sometimes. What was your worst hypochondriac moment?

my mom died of a rare neurological disease. no cure, no treatment, no relief. i'm not going to lie, when i get the smallest twitch, i wonder if that could be an indicator that i might have it. i'm sure that twitch is just muscle fatigue or dehydration but i'm not going to lie and say it doesn't cross my mind even for a second.

Glad your toe was nothing.
I didn't get freaked about things until I had thyroid cancer last year. It was a total fluke I caught it. Now I get total anxiety over things I never would have thought twice about.
My first doc appoint last year for just an annual check up I was so anxious my BP was 155. They said if it didn't go down before the end of my appointment, procedure was to send me to the ER. Luckily the appt went fine and they took it again at the end and it was back to normal at 110.

My mom died at 58 and my dad 69. I am 53. I don't have hypochondriac moments as much as goals like make it 40. Then it was 45. My next goal is 55. No one in my family has died from the same thing, so I really don't have specific things I look for.

No one in my family has died from the same thing, so I really don't have specific things I look for. no one (immediate) on my mom's side has lived past 68. i'm 51. i gotta tell ya, i'm feeling a little nervous here.... but my dad's side (aside from my grandma) is well into their late 70's with no signs of slowing down. i hope that balances the scale a bit. LOL |

Yep totally! But I won't tell anyone about my fears because I know most of them are irrational! Anyone ever get called back on a mammogram for more images and then wait and wait and wait for the notice that you are all clear? Then a year later...I had a cyst under my breast removed in April, and I had to wait on the pathology which came snail mail. All clear again, but the waiting is so stressful! I'm also a stats person, so I always compare my group of friends and how many have this or that at our age, etc. for example 1 in 5 by X age are affected by horrible disease/divorce/etc.
The wheels never stop turning!

I convinced myself I had HIV in my mid-20s. Like was CONVINCED. Because of my promiscuous past, you ask? NO! I had only had one sexual partner and we used protection. I went to Planned Parenthood to get a test. They make you meet wth a counselor, first. He was asking me questions and about my sexual history. I could tell, as nice as he was, that he was trying his best to keep a straight face. Turns out I was not HIV positive. Shocker.  I have no idea what made me think I had HIV. I think I just found (online, of course) a list of symptoms—and if you look at them, they are all pretty common. In reality, I think I was just a very, very tired new teacher who got a lot of colds because she was being exposed to all sorts of crazy kindergarten germs. ETA: My mom died of cancer and my brother is currently battling it. So I worry that every little thing is cancer. A few years ago, doctors found spots on my lung and I had to have all sorts of scans and tests—that was terrifying. They’re still there, but not growing. I still have to get at least one more scan. That’s never fun. |

Well, my latest moment was a minute ago when I read your OP!! 😂 No joke though, I have a spot on my toenail and when I read that I was thinking....holy crap!! I think mine is a bruise as well because it is growing out but for that split second 😱😂

Never a hypochondriac for me, but I was a hypochondriac-y parent (is that a word?). Every little sniffle, I was sure my darling daughters had the plague. Once DD fell, well, kind of rolled off the bed. She cried immediately. I stayed up all night watching her because I was sure she had a concussion (later I found out you are supposed to WAKE THEM UP periodically to check for concussions... nope, I just sat and watched her sleep!). Thankfully, I kept all of my hypochondriac feelings to myself and thankfully my daughters were relatively healthy. |

I've had a horrible health history including cancer and a non cancerous brain tumor, so that already makes me anxious.
But I get completely hypochondriacy with any thing heart related because my dad and my two older brothers all had heart attacks and resulting surgery at age 50 (within weeks of their birthday). So every heart palpitation I'm freaking out and wondering if I should go to the ER.
I'm 45 and see a cardiologist regularly because of my health issues, but it's treated and I'm doing great. He says my risk of heart attack is very low. He's not concerned about my family history. They were all men, my dad was (or appeared to be) completely healthy and had quit smoking about 5 years before so his heart attack was a big surprise. My two older brothers are (and were) over weight, both have smoked all there lives, and neither eat healthy.
I'm not over weight, eat healthy and have never smoked but I still panic easily and worry more the closer I get to age 50.

My Hubs family is rampant with cancer and Alzheimer's. So I worry about him constantly. He's 75. My fear is I'll have another life threatening DVT. My mother lived to be 92 with a bad heart. One of her brothers lived to 99.

Not sure if this counts , 🤣 but this morning I found a tick on our dog—made a vet appointment for him when they open in the morning, called my doctor and Googled everything I could find regarding Lyme disease.
I have the tick in a jar in our driveway (just in case it can creep out throughout the threads in the lid—didn’t want it in the house or car!!!) so that it can go to the vet.
I then scrubbed him down, and washed everything I touched with alcohol including my hands!!!!
I am totally freaked out! 😱

I could write a book of all the paranoid thoughts I have had. I'm bipolar so it comes with the territory. My ex worked night shift. I was home alone all night with the baby. I wouldn't walk into my kitchen because I had a sliding glass door that I was sure someone was watching me through and was going to hurt my baby. I was so worked up about it, my ex took a night off work and sat in the bushes watching the house to convince me there was nobody out there.
There was a bridge accident I want to say in Oklahoma when my kids were little. Cars in the water below. Freaked me out so bad that I made ex buy me something to cut the seatbelts and punch out the windows of my car should this happen to me. I was so afraid there was no way I could rescue both my kids. The kicker? I never traveled over a bridge.
And the list goes on and on... Now I know if they're happening I need to have my medicine adjusted. This is my first indicator it's no longer working.

Well, I had the opposite last week. I tried to care for myself and put myself in jeopardy. I kept trying to ‘tough it out’. Thankfully I did finally go to the ER

Not me but DH. Oh man. He's having some issues with frequent gas, some rather rank. I tell him to keep a food dairy. It took a week before he actually did and I'm not sure if he's even still doing it. He couldn't find a connection, not a consistent one. Got gas-x and Beano to help him. It's helping but if he doesn't take a couple Beano before eating any veggies, he's gassy. He's convinced he has colon cancer or maybe ibs.

Well, you never know. This happened the same year, 2016, I was having extreme stomach issues. So was my niece. Very similar symptoms. Long story short, my results were gastritis and GERD.
Hers was colon cancer.

I work in a hospital and read medical records all day long. Yeah, I imagine lots of horrible stuff for the most benign symptoms. Every ache and pain that I have or anyone I know has is a dreadful disease in my mind. I have to talk myself down constantly.

Papercraftadvocate, you can have your tick tested. You have a kit delivered with tweezers and a bunch of zip bags. We use Test My Tick. So far we gave had 4 tested, 2 on me, 2 on DH, all negative. We must live in some tick hotbed!

I have had a ton of hypochondria moments, but also true hypochondria. At it's worst, when I was 32, I was convinced I was on the verge of a heart attack (no real symptoms or any history) and would keep the phone within reach at all times so I could call 911. And that's just one of the reasons that I don't ever want to go off my anxiety meds.

I actually have this same issue, and I’m also prone to those hypochondriac moments. Many hypochondriac moments. My dermatologist glanced at my toe and declared that it was fungus. I took 3 months of medication for it and I don’t think it looks any better. I need to go back. In the meantime I’ll just pretend I never thought about melanoma. |

I have anxiety about medical issues so I have had many of those moments.
My spot was on my wrist and after a few weeks my dsis said it looked like a serious skin cancer. So, I did get freaked out and got it checked and they removed it to check it out. Every day, I checked the online account multiple times to see if there was a report and it finally showed up. Diagnosis: Bug Bite of unknown origin!

I had a strange muscle twitch right below my heart. I was just about to have my husband take me to the er. And then checked my shirt. I had a piece of cheat grass stuck in it. It is the first time in a very long time that I felt the need to go to the er.

This happened a long time ago, but omg embarrassing!! I went to the doctor because toward the back of my tongue it was all raw, irritated and hurt like heck. I'm a doctor avoider, but this freaked me out. He examines me and after some questioning determines I've irritated my tongue with mints. It was a long time ago, but think like little white, altoid type peppermint to mints. So ya I went to the doctor for mint irritation  |

It's a good thing I don't get headaches very often because every time I get one I am fairly certain that it will lead to a brain bleed.
