As you have probably guessed, this is regarding Silhouette.
I thought I had backed up everything to an external hard drive, but apparently, I did not export my library when I backed up everything else. I can't believe I missed that, and I can't believe I didn't double check. This has been a day when a lot has gone wrong. I should have just waited. Obviously I am kicking myself.
So when I opened the software, and it was waiting for an update to be installed, I permitted it. Only something didn't go right, and it wanted me to sign in as Administrator, only I am the only one who uses the computer, there was no option, I cancelled the update, and everything seems to have disappeared. The entire program. There is a partial remnant left buried somewhere in program files, but it is no longr in the Windows apps. The program itself, as far as I can tell, has essentially gone into cyberspace. Even my techie DH is puzzled. When aborted, it should have gone back to where it was before allowing the update. It didn't.
Of course, this happened after hours, so I will be contacting them first thing in the morning, but this is very inconvenient timing. I seriously wanted to scream.
Always export your library and save it somewhere on your computer before updating. My most recent was apparently January 10th, not last week as I had thought. I have downloaded a lot of files since then. I am just sick about this.
I've had files disappear before, but not the software. This is the worst update glitch ever!

Oh shoot! I was so afraid this was about your Silhouette library. So sorry this happened! I still have not upgraded my software because I am so terrified that this is going to happen. I just truly haven't had enough time to sit down and learn and really feel comfortable with backing up my library before updating.

Ugh, how frustrating. I hope you can get it sorted out and magic silhouette fairy returns all your missing files.

Oh you have my sympathy....and more. Yes, been there, done that - and still haven't got it all together again. Silhouette replaced all my purchased files (but not sorted of course) and I *think* I have got most of my own designs - saved and backed up. But it isn't as simple as that, is it!? I foresee hours and hours of sorting, organising and feeling frustrated scrapnnana. So sorry. You have been so helpful to the rest of us Silhouette users, I wish there was something I could do to help....if only it were that simple, eh?

Ugh! So sorry. As soon as I saw the title I knew what you were going to post. I haven't updated my Sil Software yet. I'm afraid something terrible will happen to it.
I hope you get it all resolved today.

Yup, the software was gone. Completely. Except for Silhouette Link.
I had to remove remaining files/folders, reload the software, input the license keys, etc. All my folders and files that I had purchased were on the Cloud. The files that I had created were mostly backed up on my computer, and I don't think I lost anything that matters. We'll see. I'll check more carefully later. I had saved most things both to my computer, and to the Silhouette library. In the future, I will make doubly sure, and I will also try to make sure that I export my library before any updates. I really thought I had done it last week when I backed everything else to an external hard drive, but evidently not.
It's taking awhile to download the files, which are going directly into their folders. Not quite 7,000 still to go, but at least I didn't lose the folders and files, so I won't have to download everything and re-sort it into the folders again. I had worried that was going to be an issue. I may not like the Cloud, but it saved me this time.
I did lose my Local User folders and what was in them, but since the individual files were mostly saved also to my hard drive, I haven't lost too much. I think most of what I had lost that was not backed up were Silhouette store files that I had altered. Most projects I have created, either for my own designs or altered Silhouette store designs, were a one time use, anyway.
The chat rep was very helpful, very nice.
Back up! Back up! Back up!

Oh no - glad you got most of it back. I haven't updated recently because I don't have time to sort things out if something goes wrong. But I will do in the near future. I do keep most of my files in the cloud now because of past folder/duplicate issues with a past update but it's definitely a good reminder!

I've been lucky; I've not had any of the software glitches others have experienced. Lately there's been lots of talk about a recent update causing cutting problems and I missed all that too.
I've never used the Silhouette Library to save my files. I save them all to folders on my hard drive, backed up to an external drive and also to a spare Google Drive account.
The only time I use the Library is to share the file with my other computer operating the Cameo, although I could just as easily use One Drive or Google Drive for that. What I do like about the Library is that you see a preview of the design, although I tend to have descriptive names for my files to remind me what they are. As I have Business Edition I can also export a JPG, which means I could have an image in the same folder of the design, which works as a preview and is no hardship as I often want an image for display anyway.
I have read somewhere that the next software update may allow for thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer for example, so that would be good.
I know I'm not typical. I haven't bought anything from the Silhouette Store, I only have the free designs. For anyone who does use the store a lot saving all the files to the hard drive might be an enormous job. But I've never been one who trusts to a library export; I want an independent copy of the files somewhere in case the export gets corrupted.
As daunting as the task might be I'd recommend having a copy of Silhouette files somewhere other than the inbuilt Library local user or Cloud. I've done it before with other digital supplies. Going forward everything gets saved to my own folder system on the hard drive and my own choice of backup storage, and every time I open an older design I save that outside the program too. It might take me some time now, but it definitely saves time in the future should anything go awry.

You give good advice, Jane, and I like your suggestion of exporting a jpg. I have the business edition.
I've had a subscription for a long time, so I do have a lot of purchased files. Those I did get back, but I may want to back up manually some of the best when I have time. I have been designing since 2005, and I used to design for someone who sold cutting files. I had over 3,000 personal files in my Local User Section of the library. Those are no longer in the library, and since they have to be imported one at a time, most will be left on my hard drive. The file name I choose usually lets me know what they are. Thankfully I have nearly always saved my own designs to my hard drive. Otherwise, they would have been lost.

I remember the first time you posted about your files getting nuked. From then on I saved everything to an external hard drive. So - thank you!

scrapnnana I am having trouble trying to download my library (3,000 files) to a USB. What did you do to save them. I am on a Mac.

I am in a PC. I chose the Export Library option. That is supposed to save everything.
