I have a business trip to Houston at the end of July/beginning of August. What do I need to know about surviving the heat and humidity with some semblance of professionalism? lol Especially worried about hair - my hair is prone to frizz in mild humidity and I can't imagine what's going to happen there. Yikes.
I don't really want to buy any clothes for the trip but... what do you wear when it's that hot?
(I'll be in downtown Houston. My hotel is about three blocks from where the meetings are, so I'll have a little walking to do.)

Wear loose natural fiber clothes, stay well hydrated, eat light, and stay in out of the sun in an air conditioned building as much as possible.

Is your hair long enough to pull back? My hair goes crazy in humidity and it's really my only option. If you have to wear a suit, I'd uber the 3 blocks at the beginning of the day. It's worth it to not start the day gross.

What tracyarts said. Also, bring a sweater or jacket for indoors. They keep the buildings really cool. See if your hotel and office are connected by the tunnels. That will keep you from going outside. A good hairspray that fights humidity is a must. I also use a bit of Moroccan oil to finish off my hair after I dry it. It helps keep the frizz down (naturally curly hair that I dry straight).

Best survival tip: Don't go. Okay, so that's not helpful. I'm going to give you some TMI advice from my BFF. Bring extra underclothes and change them in the middle of the day and/or after being out in the heat and getting sweaty. I also carry baby wipes and also use them for my neck and arms. Both of these will make a world of difference in how you feel. Drink a lot of cold water. I like long sleeved lightweight tops to keep the sun off of my skin, I feel cooler that way but it doesn't work for everyone. If you have a professional hairdo with your hair off your neck that would be best. It is going to frizz, but you won't be alone. I prefer natural fabrics. And honestly? I'd get a ride even 3 blocks to work so I don't feel yucky all day. You will start to sweat the moment you get close to the doors in the lobby. It is that humid. Walk back, cause you can shower when you get there. You will wan to change after work and before dinner so bring clothes for that.

What's a good anti-humidity hairspray?

I second the Uber or tunnel system advice. 3 blocks is a hike in that kind of heat and humidity even when you're used to it.
My hair goes limp, not frizzy, so I put it in a bun, braid, or ponytail if I'm spending any time outdoors.
I kid you not on this, my friend got married outdoors in Houston in September. She tested various makeup and hair products by steaming up her bathroom good and seeing if they held up in the humidity. Sounds silly, but it worked for her.
I'd keep hair simple, pulled back if possible, makeup light and simple. Just polished and simple will be best I think.

I suggest a nice pair of linen slacks. I have a pair that I bought from Chico’s a few years ago that fit me perfectly & are very cool to wear. Or a linen sleeveless blouse with a cardi for indoors. The extra change of undergarments during the day is a good one. Run cold water over the inside of your wrist as often as you can, that helps cool you.

I really wish I could pipe in and say we are exaggerating, but we are not. Where are you coming from busy ? Even living in Texas and being used to heat and humidity, in South Central Texas and only 3.5 hours from Houston, it's a whole different world. Severely oppressive is the best way to describe the weather in Houston in the summer. Have you ever visited New Orleans in the summer? It feels the same to me. eta: But you've gotten a lot of great advice and if you follow it you'll be okay. Sweaty and miserable, but okay

No such luck. It's a last minute trip for me and the hotels connected by the tunnels were booked. What's a good anti-humidity hairspray? That's a shame that they were booked. In that case, Uber is your friend in Houston in the summer! As for hairspray, check out the ones by Living Proof or Oribe. Pricey but worth every penny IMO.

Have you ever visited New Orleans in the summer? It feels the same to me. I've lived in NOLA twice, as well as long term in Houston. NOLA is soooo much worse for humidity. You guys are terrifying me lol Stick to the a/c and you'll be fine. That's how we survive here, we move from the a/c house, to the a/c car, to really cold offices/shopping. I go out as little as possible until October! Just steel yourself for the moment when you come off the plane into the jetway and it slaps you in the face. That's kind of brutal, especially when coming in from a cooler, lower humidity climate.

Really **GypsyGirl** ? I've only visited both locations, but they have always felt the same to me. But NO smells bad on top of the weather misery so Houston wins LOL. The first time I visited NO it was summer and I had my hair professionally straightened right before I got in the car and drove there. Within an hour of arriving I looked like I had a perm But she's right busy , you'll do almost everything inside and be fine. My husband is considering a triathlon in Houston at the beginning of August. I'm thinking unkind thoughts about him right now LOL.

Cotton underwear. I used panty liners A LOT! Skirts , cotton shirts.
Did I mention panty liners?
Monkey butt powder.
It’s okay to shower 3000xs a day.

Do NOT use that near your lady garden, it is carcinogenic.

dewryce I'm in Oregon. We don't really do humidity here. I went to college in Minnesota, so I know humidity... but wasn't there the worst months of the year. **GypsyGirl** I have both Living Proof and Oribe hairsprays. I'm all set and didn't even know it

Definitely don't walk. You'll regret that decision. If you insist upon it, bring an umbrella to shade yourself from the sun.
It's the worst time of year to visit Houston, but it's a great city and I hope you get to see some of it while you're here!

You'll have to let us know how it goes! Are you here for a weekend or just work?

Well let us know if you need ideas for your evenings and I hope you enjoy yourself We have work dinners every night. But apparently our client is a big fan of great food and wine, so they are also at excellent restaurants. I'm looking forward to that part, at least

Good advice here. Not exaggerating- you will break out in a sweat the moment the doors to your hotel open. If you wear glasses they will fog up immediately as well. Be prepared. Uber is your friend!

Don't know Houston in August but I'm still going to butt in and tell you to keep a fan in your purse on top of all the great recommendations you've already received. No, seriously, a basic fan. I know the US is hyper A/C but you never know...

OMG, all of this. Consider wearing a loose, flowy skirt with Jockey Skimmies underneath. They are magical in the Houston humidity.
Minimal makeup, and if you use eyeliner and mascara, consider waterproof varieties.
It’s terrible, but you’ll be OK. The city blocks are long, so don’t walk, but you shouldn’t have any trouble finding an Uber. Your hotel might even have a shuttle.
