I check out kindle books from the library I love it I don't need to pick up or return them. I just download them onto my kindle - you can also download to your phone or even use a different app. I love to read and no way I would want to spend that much money on books.

Library!!! So many options...for free! I never finish on time (my library gives us 3 weeks) but I just put my Kindle on airplane mode, and then the book doesn’t go away (until I connect w/ WiFi).

you can get books online at the website Gutenberg.org, The Gutenberg Project. "over 57,000 free eBooks" Most of them are old enough so that they're in the public domain, but they have a LOT of classics and lots of obscure titles, both fiction, nonfiction, periodicals, and children's books-- I've found some interesting children's chapter books from the late 1800s, early 1900s there: The Campfire Girls, The Bobbsey Twins, etc. This link is the 'category bookshelves' page; it shows what types of books they have available.

Library. Our county library does not belong to a good online system however our neighboring county, where I already had a card, has books through Overdrive. We love it for ebooks and audiobooks.

Another vote for the library! I used them all the time as a kid, but had not gone in many years. Our library's website is a little clunky but overdrive is very easy to use. There are also some libraries you can use for an annual fee regardless of where you live - Philadelphia, maybe?

Philadelphia free library is free if you are over 65 or use parents/grandparents info. As someone mentioned, book bub is good, also early bird books and the fussy librarian. If you have amazon prime, you get a free book per month from the lending library and the just had a deal for prime day for kindle unlimited for $.99 for 3 months. That offer may be still good and you can cancel it after that if you want. Enjoy!

You can sign up for emails from Pixel of Ink, they might have a Facebook page too, and a couple times a week you get an email with free and very reduced price Kindle books that are available.

I have the 2nd generation Kindle Fire. I've had it about 8 years. I RARELY pay for a book. Most books are available to borrow for 2-3 weeks for free through Overdrive at my local library.
Some Peas have listed memberships to other libraries that also have digital books available to borrow. I can't think of the names of the libraries, but if you create a thread about it I'm sure that someone will remember.
If you have challenges about getting digital books on your Kindle from your library you can go to your library and they should have someone on staff who can help you.

Shoot, I just looked it up and it doesn’t appear to be free any longer. I’m so sorry. I have had my card for over ten years. 😢

If you have a library card, use the app called ”OverDrive” or “Libby”
You can read electronic books (and also listen to audiobooks) for free. Sometimes there is a wait for newer or more popular books but generally the wait isn’t long and you can put a hold on the book right through the app.

I use the Overdrive app to download free ebooks from my library.
I always try to keep lots of books on hold. The trouble is, it’s always feast or famine.
Right now, nothing is available on my wait list. In a week or so 4 or 5 books will become available and I won’t have time to read them all before they are due. (Definitely a first world problem).
I have thought about paying the fee to join another library just so I can have more books on my waitlist and hopefully have always have something available to read.

I had 3 books on my waitlist and they all became available the same day! I only had time to read one of them. So I had to go back on the waitlist for the other 2 again. But that is the same problem with reserving physical books at the library.

Then when you're ready for it, you can make it active again.

Check the largest metro city near you, you may be able to get a free library card from them which will increase the number of books available to you. I live in a suburb of Detroit but am able to have a free Detroit library card and borrow from their digital collection.

If you live in Texas and have a library card, you can get a digital card for Houston's library. I have one.
