I THINK a person can be protected by wearing a mask to clean the litter box.
My niece had cat scratch disease that supposedly came from litter box cleaning.

I clean it 99% of the time and wear gloves and a hospital mask (sometimes). On the very RARE occasion that DH cleans it, he all but dons a hazmat suit and attaches the scoop to a long pole so he can be as far from the litter box as humanly possible.

The parasite that the article talks about and cat scratch fever are two different things. But neither one are inhaled, so unless she ate the poop or rubbed it in an open wound, its doubtful she would contract either.

I do sometimes, DH does sometimes, kid does sometimes..... No hazmat or gloves or mask. Been doing this for decades with no problems. Wash hands after throwing the bag in the trash. Done.

Generally it’s me. I don’t wear anything special. I just wash my hands afterwards... it’s a pretty simple process, not hazmat cleanup.

100% me. Wash hands after and use hand sanitizer (just out of habit). Still alive.

It’s almost always me doing the scooping. 2 or 3 times a day. I just wash my hands after.

It's almost always me. I've had cats for 50 years. Got my first one at the age of 8. I've been scooping litter boxes for 50 years.
I always wash my hands afterwards in soapy water. I'm still healthy.

It's always me. I would have to be physically incapable of going downstairs for more than a couple of days before DH would do it. He did it once and claimed he was gagging the whole time. It's one cat!
I've worn gloves but during the big dump it all out, hose it out, and put in all new litter clean out. The rest of the time, it's wash my hands or use sanitizer (depending on how lazy I'm being). I don't think I ever wore a mask.

I used to be the only one who cleaned the litter box. Then I realized I was the only one, and I am a dog person. I told DH he had to start doing the litter box because the cat was his. Turns out he's a dog person, too. We no longer have a cat.

I probably clean it 1/3 the time and my boys clean it the rest.

I clean it 99.9% of the time. No gloves. No mask. Just wash my hands when I’m done. I wasn’t allowed to do it when I was doing chemo so DH did it for those 6 months. No problems for either of us.

We currently have 15 cats. The litter trays are my job but again, i don't do anything special. Just make sure I thoroughly was my hands.

I always clean the litter box and my only precaution is to wash my hands very well after. I once had a (strange) friend who would not even step inside a home that had cats. She was petrified of getting cat scratch fever. Needless to say, this wasn't her only issue in life.

There are 4 of us and we take turns cleaning Fanta's bowl. Cat scratch disease (or parasites) aren't a concert for us - Fanta is a rabbit.
