I love to crochet, but struggle to figure out what to make since I live in Florida—not much call for gloves and warm scarves around here.
So, I’ve been thinking about donating items to charities that need specific items. Can the all-knowing Peas give some suggestions of reputable charities that might fit the bill?

i don't know a specific charity but i have heard of people donating caps for newborns. how about some Boys and Girls clubs or homeless charities in colder states where they can give them out?
i crochet too and i am drowning in my own projects of scarves and beanies. i live in L.A. so i basically get two weeks use out of them each year. LOL

Blankets are useful for both homeless shelters and dog/cat rescues!

Our own kaylaaimee posted about this on her blog a few years ago. Even if it's not for this group, I think it's an excellent idea. DD was almost a premie and my MIL wanted to buy an Easter dress for her. We made it to 37 weeks, 1 day!) I said no because 1. I didn't want to jinx it and have have a need for a premie Easter dress and B. DD wouldn't have been able to wear it anyway. So I kind of get Kayla's excitement. Blog Link

How about Crochet for Cancer? www.crochetforcancer.org/faqs/At the Chemo Suite at Walter Reed, there is a table with crocheted chemo caps and sewn seatbelt port pillows for people in treatment to take as needed. I would imagine that most hospitals with chemo suites/rooms have similar tables. Since I crochet, I haven’t taken a hat, but I’ve seen others do. I did take a lovely port pillow that I use when my husband drives me anyplace and the seatbelt falls directly on my port.

Would a local preschool or kindergarten like some crocheted play items? I'm thinking items like multiple separate layers to make a cake topped with fruit. Or burgers with all the fillings. They could be used to learn to count or id colours.

i've seen people use plastic bags to make crocheted sleeping mats for homeless shelters. I also have a friend who makes cage blankets for the humane society/animal shelters. She makes knitted knockers too, and I think there is a crochet version. Special Olympics also takes donations of hats & scarves for their opening ceremonies, you can look up the colors by state.

Red Scarf ProjectThis is part of a program that gives support to college students who were foster kids growing up. They give care packages to them and one item that is included is a red knit or crocheted scarf.

Project Robby From their website "It is our mission through Project Robby to help provide hospitals, parents, and bereavement photographers with tiny hats and blankets that will be small enough to fit babies who are born prematurely and who unfortunately will not survive. We would love for families to have a special blanket to wrap their angel babies in and we would like them to have a hat that comes closer to fitting their baby who was born too soon. We would love to give families something personal to hold onto when they can no longer hold onto their baby."

The Linus Project accepts blankets for babies and children who are in the hospital or who are in some type of distress. I know they take quilts and I think they take crochet blankets also. You could see if there is a chapter near you.

I know our hospital gives a hat to every newborn. Prayer shawls at the hospitals. They call them prayer shawls but really they are just comfort wraps. I live in a cold place, I love making afghans but how many do you really need. I have a few things to finish up but I saw a need at the hospital for prayer shawls anything in the 3x4ish size. I think I'm going to start making stuff for them. So nice of you to donate, wherever you decide.

I didn't read the comments but Ronald McDonald house or Children's Hospitals always love soft handmade blankies. Call and ask them.

Plus don't forget you can make dishcloths, regardless of climate. I freakin' love hand-knit or crocheted dishcloths, but that might be because I'm older than dirt.

My MIL used to knit baby hats and chemo caps. My mom’s church would give prayer shawls to anyone who wanted one when a funeral was held there. My sisters, a couple brothers and I all got one. They also gave soft fleece blankets to all the little kids, I’m sure those could also be knitted or crocheted instead of fleece. They had a whole group of knitters that would get together monthly to work on stuff as an outreach program.

Our church gives out prayer shawls to those who need comforting - through bereavement or illness. Perhaps local churches have such a ministry?
I know that nursing homes would welcome lap blankets, too. Even in the warmest of climates, some elderly have trouble regulating their temperature.
