I have a Lexmark 5650. It was unplugged for a month while we were moving, and ever since then it's been a pain in the butt. Cartridge error messages, having to restart my computer to print something, and now it only prints every other page. We've deleted everything, reloaded the program, installed updated drivers - it doesn't help.
I don't print as much as I used to (50-100 sheets per month) but it needs to print "professional"-looking, kwim? I've had printers where it just looked cheap, no matter the settings. 8.5x11, b/w and color.
Any suggestions? I guess we paid about $150 for this one. I'd rather not go that high, but if I have to spend a bit more initially and less on ink, that would work.

I'm assuming you're looking for a color inkjet...? I've had an Epson WF-3520 for over a year now, and have never had any problems with it. I don't use it for faxing, although it's able to do that if you hook it up to a phone line. But I've used it for plenty of scanning, copying, and printing of documents and even photos, and it has not disappointed me yet.

I know everyone has his/her favorite, but for me any Canon Pixma printer is a blessing. After having Brother, Epson and HP, I would take my Canon over them any day. They can be pretty inexpensive too, depending on what you need your printer to do. Good luck with your decision.

I don't need any faxing, and I completely forgot about the scanner!
I think I'm going to have to get something tomorrow. It was in power-saving mode, and all of a sudden started to print one solid sheet of black. It took me a minute to figure out what the sound was and by the time I made it to the printer, there was an inch and a half of solid black.

At home we have an Epson and at work we have two Epson's and a Brother. I can't say enough good about the Epsons. Excellent quality, easy to set up and use...I could go on and on. Love the Epson printers!!

The cartridges probably dried out. If you clean the print heads (Q-Tip dipped in >90% alcohol), allow them to dry and replace the cartridges, it may have been fine. Dirty print heads can be problematic.

My Canon Pixma died. I miss it dearly. The ol man wanted Epson, so that's what I have now I have NOT been able to use it by myself yet. It is not as user friendly and I keep threatening to throw it away. I will definitely get another canon

I'm a huge fan of Canon printers. I've used them for at least 10 years. The ink used to be so much cheaper than Epson or HP. Now, the prices are comparable. The big difference is that Canon printers let you run until the ink is actually out. The Epson and HP printers have a chip in the ink cartridges (or at least used to) that made the printer stop printing after a certain number of pages.
That said, I got an Epson all-in-one at work and I have to say that it was a gazillion times easier to scan on it than on my comparable Canon. The scanner interface is so much more intuitive and it's slam-dunk easy to scan to PDF, even multiple pages. My Canon makes me jump through hoops to do the same thing.

I don't think I will ever own any printer other than an HP. I've loved every HP we've ever had, they last forever, the ink is great.
I currently have an HP Officejet Pro and I love it. I can print until the ink cartridge is empty.

I can print until the ink cartridge is empty. I've always used HP laser printers professionally. They last forever. I've never tried an HP inkjet though.

It's all been cleaned and dried and replaced (after I read your comment). It then said "cartridge error". I take the cartridge out (new one put in last week), replace it, and hit "ok" when it says to load paper and align. Then, it looks fine - no messages or anything. I tried to print two pages and it started to print then stopped and just said "printing" on the printer screen. I went through and cancelled the job, cleared the screen, unplugged/replugged/restarted everything.
The printer kicks on and prints the missing page of something I tried to print three days ago.
I give up. lol

My Epson prints like a dream but I wanted to warn you that I have never been able to use cheaper paper in it and those fake inks. I have to buy Epson paper and Ink and it is the only brand NEVER on sale. I will see the Canon and other papers on sale at Staples all the time but not the Epson!

Ah, well, you tried. Unfortunately printers are commodity items, it's cheaper to buy a new one than fix the old one. You might check with your local Goodwill, though. When my last printer died they actually wanted it even though it needed repairs. They have a job training program that can use them. I was finally convinced to go with a laser printer over an ink jet when I had to buy one the last time. Although laser cartridges are more costly, by the time you add up what you spend on ink jet cartridges in a year, they are often more cost effective. I went with a color HP Laser that was on sale at Staples and it prints like a dream. It's an all-in-one (printer, scanner, fax) but that's what they make these days.
