I am meeting some friends in Salt Lake City, but unfortunately my flight gets in at 11 a.m. (it was cheaper) and theirs gets in at 7:30 p.m. So needless to say, I will have a TON of time to kill.
I will have a rental car. But I was thinking about just staying at the airport the whole time and then we pick up the car together.
BUT since I can have the rental car, I could pick it up and go anywhere in/around the city instead.
1. Any suggestions on how I could kill time (inexpensively) in SLC? I've been to Temple Square before, but that's about it.
2. OR does anyone have a suggestion on where I could park myself and work for at least a good chunk of that time?
3. OR is there an awesome spot in the airport to hunker down for the day?
Don't say go to a sweet airport lounge: I have lounge access to most airlines EXCEPT I'm not flying Delta, the only lounge SLC has, which requires a Delta ticket. I also only have one friend who lives in SLC, but she's a doctor and will be working that day so we can't hang out. Womp womp.

I like museums. I like the outdoors. I like shopping, but only for an hour or two. I def like scrapbooking. I'm pretty flexible, ha. But honestly, I'd be happy with a good lunch spot and then a nice place to spend at least several hours or more with free wifi so I could get some work done. And then maybe one other activity? What I don't like is wandering around with nothing to do such as, for example, going to the grocery store when you don't need or even want to buy anything. In this scenario, I'd walk up and down every aisle and then end up with a Starbucks, some ice cream, and three peaches and be like, why did I just waste my time and get these random things I don't even really want I like having an activity or a purpose. Which is why I'm ok with working for a big portion of time. I did look into some coworking space options, but didn't know if anyone had any better ideas! Oh, I even looked into how much the least expensive hotel room would cost, and $60-70 is too rich for my blood just for that purpose. But that would be super ideal. I could get lunch and then go eat in the room, watch some TV, do some work, even take a nap, haha.

You could take a drive around Antelope Island State Park and see all the animals and views, then find a coffee shop/cafe to sit and people watch, do your work or what ever strikes your fancy.

I would head over to The Gateway Mall, for window shopping and catch a movie there. City Creek Center mall isn’t to far from there and would be another great place to walk around.

You could hit Mom & Me Scrapbooking in SLC & Heartfelt Hobby in Sandy if you are interested in seeing the LSS's. Wow, I haven't used that acronym in years, lol. Where are you coming from & when is your trip? Have you experienced UT canyons/mountains before? It's so beautiful!

Labor Day is a perfect time to visit! Are you staying in a hotel with your friends? Could you ask if you can check in early?

I'll be hanging out solo — do you think the trails on Antelope Island are pretty safe for a solo female hiker?

I would do it alone myself. Just be sure to take your phone. Shouldn't have a service issue as it is so very close to the city. Oh, there was a lot of knats, and I'm not sure if they were a normal thing or not, but maybe take what ever your preferred bug off product is.

Antelope Islmd is beautiful! If you like the outdoors you could also drive up a canyons, or go to the “this is the place” park and admire the view (and probably work at a picnic table too).

Oh yeah, DON'T stay at the airport!! First off, the SLC airport kind of sucks for any sort of lounging (really limited plugs, gets pretty crowded in a lot of areas - they are building a new airport but until then, it's fairly small), and secondly, SLC is really fairly compressed and you can get around to a lot in 7 hours!! Easy driving, not crazy traffic, not too much sprawl for anywhere you'll want to go.
You might consider driving up to Park City to find a great lunch spot and then finding a niceplace to sit and chill/work. It is way prettier than the valley - maybe a 30-40 minute drive. LOTS of resort areas that have great restaurants or hotel lobbies with beautiful views that you can lounge at for a long time. It's off-season up there so it won't be crazy and nobody will be pushing you out the door to turn a table quickly.

So you want an indoor place to work, you like museums, and you like scrapbooking. 1. Mom and Me Scrapbook Store. They are only open until 5:00 so go there first. 2. The Leonardo Museum. Changing exhibits. Located downtown. Attached to the - 3. Salt Lake City Library. Wifi and quiet space for you to work. It is right across the street from - 4. The City County Building, which is a spectacular historic building in the middle of a ten-acre park. There's a lunch restaurant on the first floor of the building called cytybyrd. "450 South 200 East First Floor of The Historic City and County Building." The menu looks interesting - gourmet sandwiches. You could eat in the park outside the building under a shady tree I'm on my phone so sorry about the inelegant links. m.facebook.com/momandmescrapbooking/www.theleonardo.org/en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_Lake_City_Public_LibraryIt sounds like you're meeting your friends at the airport. These suggestions will keep you reasonably close to the airport. By the way, the airport is under construction. Watch road signs carefully on the airport property, as the roads are constantly being re-routed.

Considering how comparatively short your free time is, I would agree with this. Antelope Island is a bit far to go in that amount of time. If you had longer, Pioneer Village is interesting. I mostly visit the scrapbook stores. Mom and Me scrapbooking is good. And the Vinyl Outlet is good, too, if you are into vinyl or HTV projects.

Antelope Island? Don't you have to drive to Clearfield to get access to it? Is there an access road out there closer to Salt Lake?
I don't have a lot of love for Salt Lake, so I can't really suggest anything, except steer clear of Pioneer Park.

Head straight up to Park City and let your friends fend for themselves. This is what I would do! i would head to Park City and see if I could check in early. I’d take a hike and then take a nice long shower. After that, i’d sit outside and read a book. I’d have a cheese tray and a couple of bottles of wine ready for when my friends arrive. I would not waste an entire day of vacation “killing time.” Since your friends are on an evening flight on a holiday weekend, there is no telling what time they will arrive in Salt Lake City. If if I were your friends, I would completely understand why you would want to head on up to Park City. I would be thrilled if you had wine and cheese waiting for me when I arrived!

And even if you have to run back to the airport to get them in the rental car, it is an easy drive. A little winding, but it is a straight shot on 80 from Park City to the airport, maybe 35-40 mins max. The traffic getting into the airport pickup line is worse than the traffic on 80 (seriously it is sooooo backed up at the airport often now). You could easily have 6+ hours up there before you have to head back to the airport.

We just got back from SLC last week. Park City is wonderful and you would enjoy it. If you don't want to go that far, check out Red Butte Gardens up by The University of Utah. www.redbuttegarden.org/

Skip the Gateway- lots of empty buildings and Barnes & Noble either already has or will be closing doors soon. We loved Cherry Creek for shopping and browsing- a fun mix of stores.
