Curious about the typical lifespan of an ereader, especially the Kindle Paperwhite. Thanks!

I have an original Nook that is 8 years old. It still works fine, but I recently got an email from Barnes & Noble that they are no longer supporting it and I won't be able to download any more new books.

My first kindle lasted about 5 years, before it was broken in an accident. My second is only about a year old, so we'll see how long it keeps going.

I have had my Kobo since 2012, it's my first and only.
Tip put a pop socket on the back for easy holding, if you don't have a case on your ereader.

I’ve had my kindle paperwhite for awhile. I think around 4 years or longer maybe.

I gave my first Paperwhite to my DD last year because she wanted one - then ordered myself a new one. Hers is still going strong - it's about 5 years old now. I love that gadget.

I have a 6th Generation Paperwhite that I bought in Oct 2013. It still works.
I’ve since moved on to using iPads for most things and occasionally reading. But I did upgrade to a Kindle Oasis in 2016. It’s my favorite for reading by far.

I was given a Kindle as a gift in 2012, and it's still going strong. I would like to upgrade to a Paperwhite but mine is working so well I feel like I can't justify it!

I bought my first Kindle in 2011 and I bought my Paperwhite in 2013. Both are still working just fine. I use my Paperwhite almost every day and have since I bought it. I don’t take it out of the house except when we travel and I’ve never dropped it, except from my bed height to the carpeted floor. I have it in a case and it looks like new.

I have every Nook that has been released (hi my name is scrappyesq and I hoard ereaders). My oldest one is 8 years old and still works.
My kindle, OTOH, bit the dust after 3 years. Just stopped working.

My 1st gen Nook lasted about 6 years and then just stopped. I got a new one 4 years ago, and it’s still going strong.

Also have a Nook tablet that is about 6 or 7 years old. Still going, but has a few issues. Can't complain, I've used to read hundreds of books and used it to surf the web for a few years when I first got it. I'll be, watching this thread as I will eventually need a new e-reader.

I have two Kindle Paperwhites and they’ve been going strong for a few years now. And I’m pretty rough on them—-they go to the pool and the beach, get carried around in tote bags, etc.

My first Kindle is probably about 8 years old and still works fine. I just gave it to DD. It wasn't a paperwhite--maybe the second generation Kindle. I've had a Paperwhite for probably 4-5 years and have no complaints and no intent to replace it.
I got my kids Kindle Fires several years ago, and they did not hold up well, but that may have been because of the kids. They also managed to destroy one of our Nooks. DH has continued to read on my nook that is about the same age as my original Kindle, and it works fine, too.

My kindle paperwhite was 8 years old. It started not always holding a charge well. I used it every day, multiple times, for 8 years without issue. I just replaced it with a new one.

I have a Paperwhite that is about 2 years old. I use it daily, for several hours a day and it works perfectly. Prior to purchasing the Paperwhite I had a Kindle Keyboard. I no longer use it daily but when I do use it it works great still. It is about 5 years old.

Maybe you could gift it to someone who wants an ereader but can't afford one? The screen on the Paperwhite is sooooo much easier on my eyes!

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate all of your responses, and it's good to know that many of you have had your devices working for 4-8 years! That's great! I've been having no luck getting any of my new Kindle books to download to my 1.5 yo Paperwhite since yesterday afternoon. Had some great suggestions on my thread about that and will try those later. You peas rock, alway so generous with ideas and feedback! <3 kckckc - bummer that the Nook will no longer be supported. Sounds like you had a great run though. milocat - I love the holder I have for the Paperwhite. It wouldn't be comfortable for me to use without it. Re: Pop Sockets - I have never seen one. I donated to their Kickstarted campaign in the early days, but they were very much delayed in production. After 2-3 years, I think it was, I didn't bother replying to their email asking which color Pop socket I wanted. Have you had yours for long? Where did you get it? @restless Spirit - I've never heard of the Oasis... will check it out. I've been wondering how to find out which generation my Kindle is... how do you know? scrappyesq - there are far worse vices, eh?

I like the early, non-backlit kindles. My first one was about 5 or 6 years old when it got dropped over a second floor balcony onto a hard tile floor. I bought a used one off of eBay and have had it for two years now.

My original Kindle still works but I never use it because I was given a Paperwhite 6 years ago and I prefer it since I can read in the dark without having to have a light on. I've had to do a hard restart twice since I've had it but that's the only issue I've ever had with it. It is used daily.

It won't recognize new books I have ready to upload. Grrr. Press and hold the "on" key at the bottom until it shuts off. It takes a little bit. It will power itself back up. ETA: It's been a bit since I did it, you might have to power it back on yourself after powering it off. Either way this will reset it, if that's your problem.
