I'll read along. I've had that in my Kindle queue for a bit but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. You've given me the perfect reason to put it at the top of my list.

I like the idea but it's all I can do to keep up with my Nursing Research readings. I shouldn't even be here posting right now. Maybe I can revisit after graduation and bring this thread back up. It IS a very difficult subject to discuss or think about.
Here on this board I have been challenged to reflect on my words and how they can be seen by black people. I never meant any harm, and I was upset at being called a racist for bringing up black on black violence in a thread about police brutality, but one thing was accomplished: it got me to really consider the subject and how I can do better. For that I thank olan. It can be really hard to view our own selves in an unpleasant light but that's how growth occurs.
Anyway thank you very much for introducing the topic and providing links.

Do you have a link for the other thread that started this discussion? Nothing on the front page is jumping out at me.

I’d like to join in! I have a free day since a typhoon is (not) hitting so I’ll download the book and start reading. I need to stretch my brain past rereading classic science fiction is all I seem to do lately.

I won't be able to start reading along as early as the discussion starts, given our schedule the next two weeks, but I can read it during the last two weeks so that I can at least be on track for part of it. Thanks for pointing it out, SockMonkey.

I’m going to try to participate but I cannot promise that I’ll always be very involved or keep on track. School and soccer start this week for my girls so schedules get a little crazy

I have this on my Nook but haven't read it yet. As others have said, I'm not sure how much I can keep up but I am interested in discussing.

*$!?$#! I just typed out a long reply and lost it. grrr! SockMonkey - THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS!! I wish I could participate right now but I'm swamped. I'm a 57 yo white woman who cares passionately about racial justice. Coincidentally, at this afternoon's meeting of my congregation's Social Justice ministry, we were discussing the possibility of doing a congregation-wide READ with this very book and then offering discussion groups. @z*G @z*G - I was also shocked to be called a racist. About three years ago I had been showing off my "colorblindness" which I had grown up believing was a good thing... ie. you're not my black friend, you're my friend, I don't see us as any different, better or worse. Well, when i said that I was very loudly and publicly accused of being racist. I was deeply shocked, but almost immediately after, and to this day, I consider it an enormous gift. I began seeking out black voices in print, on television, on Facebook, and I began to learn about my white privilege, systemic racism and injustice, etc. I joined my excellent local branch of SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice), a nationwide org. created for white people to educate other white people about issues of race. It's NOT the job of black people to do this for us! I'm always grateful to Olan and others who raise issues and inform me of situations they and other black folks experience every day. I want to be part of the solution... <3

Because of my schedule the next month or so, I can’t commit to your reading timeline, but I’ll be following the discussion while reading the book and your other links as time permits. Thanks for starting this. I expect I will learn a lot.

I will try to keep up and am looking forward to the discussion. I work for an organization that is making a concerted effort to be aware, equitable, diverse and inclusive and it's quite clear that we have a ways to go.
We have a diversity book club that reads both fiction and non-fiction and this book is on our pending list. We are currently reading "The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America" by Richard Rothstein followed by "So You Want to Talk about Race" by Ijeoma Oluo.

I'm not sure I'll be able to read along right now but I'd love to participate in the discussion and learn from it if that's okay?
"About three years ago I had been showing off my "colorblindness" which I had grown up believing was a good thing... ie. you're not my black friend, you're my friend, I don't see us as any different, better or worse. Well, when i said that I was very loudly and publicly accused of being racist."
This is the kind of thing that is very confusing and one of the thought processes that make it difficult for people to talk about racism. I thought that was the goal, to judge each other by the content of our character and not the color of our skin? The cynic in me says that's the kind of attitude that says you just can't win. In the past, if you say you're my black friend, you're accused of being a racist for categorizing him or her as black. Now you're a racist for not doing that? It's confusing and the rules keep changing or so it seems. So I have more to learn and I have room to grow. When I know better, I do better.
