Sad...his form of brain cancer is just awful. I know two children who have died from it.

I often disagree with his politics but my god what a strong man he has been. And I think a good man. So sad for his family and our country.

I know who he is of course, but I don't know all that much about his political career and what he achieved.
However it is always a sad day for a person and the people who care about them when they are faced with the reality that their cancer treatments are not working and it is time to stop. My heart goes out to his family & friends.
Prior to getting sick my Dad used to spout off about how he wouldn't have chemo and "poison his whole system". Of course when the time came he did have chemo and then I was in the room when the oncologist told him that there were no more options, that he was now too unwell to have any more treatments. He cried and begged the doctor, saying he wanted more chemo. It was heartbreaking.
Ceasing treatment is never as easy as they make it sound, it hard on the person and all those around them. I hope Trump at least has one small grain of compassion and keeps his big orange trap shut.

I just read an alert about this. Sad day for his family. I also may not always agree with his politics but first he is human and no one or family should have to ever experience this and 2nd, he served his country with honor. That alone deserves respect.

Yes, it truly is sad for anyone who has to make this decision.
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a HORRIBLE disease and very rarely curable. My mother lasted 1 short year after her diagnosis and making the decision that she couldn't receive any further treatment (that we knew wouldn't cure it anyway) was hard. I've lost 2 women in my life from this horrible cancer.

G-d bless him and his family. I’m sitting in the chemo room hooked up to my Taxol drip while reading this and hearing about the decision for the first time. I hope that they are able to keep him out of pain and yet also coherent enough to enjoy what time he has left with his family.

Very very sad and a very brave decision for him to have to make. It must be one of the most difficult decision anyone has to make and also so hard for his family, but I can understand why.

I'm so sorry to read this news.
Way back in 1978, my government teacher took a small group of high school seniors to a leadership conference in Oklahoma City, which was about 100 miles from my hometown. McCain was the featured speaker and he talked about his experiences as a POW.
He told about how the American prisoners were forced to listen to communist propaganda every day in their cells. No positive news about the U.S. was ever broadcast and the prisoners knew very little about what was going on in the world. They were all aware, of course, that the U.S. and Russia were involved in a race to the moon, but they had no idea how it was going.
One day, the broadcaster was criticizing Richard Nixon. She said "He can put a man on the moon, but he can't win the war in Vietnam."
The prisoners weren't allowed to talk to each other, but they communicated in code. They all started coding to each other "Did she just say what I think she said? Does that mean we landed on the moon?" McCain said the news of the moon landing really bolstered the prisoners' spirits.
After all these years, I have never forgotten that story.

This makes me so sad for his family. I recently watched a show about Ernie Brace and Senator McCain bing held captive at the “Hanoi Hilton” together. The unspeakable treatment these POWs received was horrid. After watching some of what these men went through, it makes one wish their remaining lives would be filled with everything peaceful and beautiful in an attempt to make up for the torture they endured. If life was fair, it would have been.

God bless him. I didn't agree with his politics, but I never doubt his love for our country. He is a decent man who really wants what is best for the American people. I hope he is comfortable and surrounded by his family and friends in what time he has left.

I am so sad to hear this. Sometimes you don't get to make the decision to stop the chemo. Sometimes the doctors tell you they can't do anymore. That's what happened to my DH. His doctor cried when she had to tell him there was nothing else they could do. I'm so sorry for the McCain family. I hope they enjoy the days they have together from here on out.

So sad. I hope he has enough time left with his family for meaningful interactions and that they are able to make some sweet memories in that time. I also hope his is able to be as pain free as possible.

I bet that his decision is just being made public and he has a few days left. Not sure why I think that but I do That was my first thought as well. It is like with Mrs Bush a few months back - almost as if the family is giving us a bit of advance warning of their death.
