I used to live near a really good LSS. I did buy some things just because I liked them, but mostly I tried to buy papers and embellishments that went with my photos. I would take my photos with me to the LSS.
Then they closed. They were the last LSS in the area where I lived. I bought a ton of paper, cardstock, and other things as they were doing their going out of business sales.
A year or two later I moved halfway across the country. There are 3 LSS in the area, but it is a HUGE area, and everything is spread out more. No LSS is actually close to me. I am more likely to buy things I like at Tuesday Morning. They are closer and near Costco, where I shop for groceries each week.
I did manage to do some shopping at a couple of LSS a few months ago. My DH drove me to the other LSS last week, to take advantage of their moving sale. I took no photos with me. I just bought papers and other things that I liked. I realized belatedly that was probably stupid, because my stash has grown faster than I can use it.
I have been shopping from my stash when scrapbooking. Sometimes it takes awhile to find papers in my stash that work well with my photos, but it still is less time than driving to any LSS. Besides, my stash has gotten so big, I really need to shop it first, anyway.
My question: Do you buy papers you like and then match pictures to the paper in your stash or do you take your photos with you when you shop for papers, etc., to go with the pictures? Or do you just shop online and hope the colors are true?
I feel like I am doing this backwards or something, even though it is more practical for my situation now. I just can't run to the LSS every time I need something anymore.

I don't print all of my photos in color, so that helps me when I am wanting to use a collection that maybe doesn't fit the photos I have at the time. When it comes to buying supplies, I buy what I like/want. I buy enough different paper collections that I don't usually run in to an issue of not being able to use a photo, and if I do, like I mentioned, I print black & white.

I used to take my photos with me and match papers/cardstock to the photos. It really worked well. But there aren't any LSS locally anymore - I think the nearest is a 3+ hour drive and for a long time, there were any big box stores here either so I started stocking up when we were out of town and my stash grew...
I don't shop too much anymore - I do have a Michaels and a HL here in town now but I mostly re-stock as I run out of stuff. I will pick up basics if they go on clearance - HL has had alphas on clearance lately and I've picked several up - or collection kits/stickers on clearance or at TM but I try to stick to stuff I know I'll use.
I've also found that sometimes I don't need to match the papers to the photos - sometimes it works out okay to match the papers to each other and to the theme/feeling of the layout and just add the photos (turning them black and white helps here but I don't usually bother unless they really clash).
I've been scrapping for 16 years though and I have a pretty good feel at this point for what I'll use and what I just think looks pretty in the store but won't work well when I go to scrap.
Not sure if any of my rambling has been helpful...

i buy whatever i like. i never worry if the photos match. if i stress too much about the little things, it becomes too stressful and i just don't want to do it.
99% of my shopping is online; the rest is TM, HL, etc. so really no opportunity to take photos with me, even if i were so inclined.
i don't think you can do it backwards! whatever works for you is what you should do.

There was a time when I had 4 stores fairly close by and I would take photos with me so I could purchase what I needed for the layout(s) I was going to work on. Unfortunately they all closed a long time ago. Then I discovered another one but it was a 45 minute drive and their brick and mortar store closed at the beginning of the summer. Now I'm left with having to shop online for supplies. I hate buying paper online... I can't see what it looks like, feel the quality, etc. so I'm left with having to use the paper in my stash. I find I am resorting to using white backgrounds more now and making my own embellishments to match the layout using digital supplies. There is one last store but it is across the border in Buffalo. When DH and I go on our shopping trips, I ALWAYS stop in to touch and feel all of the new stuff. I'm like a kid in a candy store!

When I paper scrapped, I would just buy paper willy-nilly. I even bought cutesy kid paper just because it was cute, and I don't have kids! That's how I ended up 5 12x12 Iris containers of paper that I never used. (I gave that much to my niece's school). Oh and I bought a minimum of three sheets of each paper. Two for a double page layout and one to keep.
Unfortunately this way of buying paper transferred to my digi scrapping at first, then I came to my senses and now I only purchase kits for specific themed or vacation albums. I don't scrap the everyday stuff.

I don’t match paper to photos. If the colors really clash I use layers and embellishments to make one of the colors the accent color.

I buy the paper because I like it. I have bought papers that are for something special - for instance, I saw some Thomas the Train papers and had to buy them. Haven't used them yet but do have pictures for them! My paper purchasing is limited to CKC (where I clean up!) and online shopping. The Peas are great enablers (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!). I miss having a local scrapbook store. I very rarely buy paper from Joann's or Michaels, AC Moore. I guess my answer to your question is I buy paper first, then match to photos. If I can't find what I need, I just buy more!

Sometimes I'll try to buy paper for specific photos, like skull and crossbones for pirate photos, but usually if I'm buying it by the sheet I just buy basics that will go with anything - no theme. I scrap multi photo, so I go for smaller prints. And I have a hard time with bright colors, so I try to avoid them when I can.
I'm set for paper for a long time now though. I'm trying to just use what I have.

Well. I just buy what I like (exclusively online). Match later lol. My stash is stupid big so I always have something. You made me laugh! That describes mine at this point, too! There was a time when I had 4 stores fairly close by and I would take photos with me so I could purchase what I needed for the layout(s) I was going to work on. When DH and I go on our shopping trips, I ALWAYS stop in to touch and feel all of the new stuff. I'm like a kid in a candy store! I hate buying online, too. Same reasons. It sounds like most of us are pretty much "buy now, match later" shoppers. Without any LSS close by, it's just not practical to try to match photos to paper with a special trip to the LSS. I think I feel a lot better about having a "stupid big" stash. Thanks!

I buy papers I like that I know I will use or I think I could use in the future. And then there are those papers I just love that I buy and hope I remember I have them if the perfect opportunity ever arises.

I used to take my photos with me too and layer everything together. Now when I buy patterned paper, I also get matching cardstock so at least I have options. I miss the LSSs!

I buy what I like, but I stopped buying paper in the last year or so as I rarely use it. I scrap 6x8 mostly now and use pockets or cardstock that I stamp a patten on. I still buy some paper to collect, but I but my stash down a lot last year when I realized I just didn't use it.

I buy what I like and think I will use then match it up when I make the layout. The closest scrapbook store is about an hour away so almost all of my shopping is online. I tend to stick with the same companies so I am familiar with the weight and colors of their lines.

I'm so jealous and ready to road trip. I live near the Dallas/Fort Worth area. However, it is a huge area. DH was commenting that it is essentially the equivalent of the Washington, DC/Baltimore area combined (we used to live near DC). My Scrap Haven is in Frisco, north of Dallas. However, they will be closed until October, since they are in the process of moving to a new location. The Crafty Scrapper is in Waxahachie, which is southeast of Dallas. The Little Blue House is in Richland Hills, which is more southwest of Dallas, and nearer to Fort Worth. It might be part of Fort Worth. I am still learning my way around. There is actually a fourth one, which recently changed hands, and is southwest of Fort Worth. I can't remember the name, but I think it was added to the LSS list for Texas stores. I went to that one and the Little Blue House one day, and it was a lot more driving than I will be likely to do again, unless I have DH or a scrapping friend along. The Little Blue House used to be about 30 minutes from me till they moved. I have a feeling that My Scrap Haven will be moving farther away, too. It takes at least 45 minutes to drive to the closest one. Waxahachie is an hour and 15 minutes. I did take a scrapping buddy to that one when she came to visit last fall. They are all very far apart, which is a good thing, since it means they are more likely to all stay in business. It's just hard for me to get to any of them. Edited to add: that 4th store is called Little Gnome Crafts and is in Joshua.

My question: Do you buy papers you like and then match pictures to the paper in your stash or do you take your photos with you when you shop for papers, etc., to go with the pictures? Or do you just shop online and hope the colors are true? I pretty much buy what I like... with the full knowledge that not all of it will get used. But that works for me because I'm not a super-themed or super-specific scrapper. I buy [mainly] a smaller range of colors/patterns, knowing my likes/dislikes, and knowing that a certain % of any 'stack' I buy will NOT be used. I hardly EVER shop for paper with specific pictures in mind, unless it's something super-specific, like when I bought Japanese-themed and origami paper for a certain group of layouts about Japanese Samurai armor. I don't buy the whole rainbow of colors / patterns / icons... I buy with my main scrapping topics in mind. So as cute as the mer-cats and unicorns and rainbow-1980s stuff is, I have NOTHING to use it with, so I leave it on the shelf. Same with the majority of Shimelle, Dear Lizzie and Maggie Holmes 'vintage girly' 'super-cute' or 'uber-floral' collections. I can't help myself sometimes, but it's getting better than it used to be, lol. My main topics are travel-related day trips and places we go in the Southwest, so I buy a lot of colors that can be used with outdoor themes, and a lot of colors that coordinate with the main Southwest outdoor color scheme of rust-reds, browns, grayish-darker greens, and blues. I buy a lot of distressed / neutral patterns and colors that can be used as backgrounds, and scrap mostly with them, using just accents of brighter colors or more vibrant patterns. I will use some of the cute/floral stuff for around-the-house or pet-related layouts, but like I said, I do buy paper knowing full well that a certain % of it might not get used for years, if ever. (eta: when I buy a stack, the first thing I do is take out the sheets I think are super-ugly, really-loud, god-awful patterns, and either use them for scratch paper or use the back-side to protect my work surface, use for test die cuts, use them as white backgrounds, etc.) I use my 'general' stash along with some more specific embellishments, rubber stamps, die-cuts, etc. to make my layouts- but the layout 'base' is usually always pretty theme-less.

I'm all over the place with my paper shopping. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) I buy the entire collection if I really like it and sometimes I'll buy additional pieces of paper from it. I also just pick and choose certain papers from a collection if I like it. I did learn pretty quickly to stop buying the paper stacks cause typically I'd only like about a 4th of the papers. I have a lot of paper and a lot of collections, but I've been scrapping since 2002, and my taste seems to change annually. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) And I don't think there's a right or wrong way to do anything with this hobby-it's whatever makes you feel the happiest and most creative that is the right thing. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

I totally buy what I like and then match to pictures later. I've got a pretty good idea of what I like and will actually use so like crimsoncat05 I can exclaim over how cute the mercats/purrmaids are and then leave them behind. I buy almost exclusively online which actually gives me more time to review my cart and make sure I will use the things I purchase.

The nearest LSS is a block from the nearest WalMart where I usually print photos. I often go to the photo kiosk, place my one-hour photo order, then go to the LSS to hang out until the pics are ready. So sometimes I buy papers for my specific photos. But while I am there I also purchase pp, cs, and other supplies I “might be able to use”. I scrap by season, so grab up seasonal collections. I scrap my dgk’s, so I collect papers to scrap their favorite sports and other activities. I scrap about trips, so travel lines catch my eye. I make bd and Xmas cards, so shop for supplies for those. I shop for POSSIBILITIES.
Most of my scrapping is done at home, and I am happiest when I have options, so my stash is “stupid big”, too. When I see something I like, I always grab at least 2 of them; if it is a colour or pattern that looks really versatile, I will get more. Once my new supplies get home, they get mixed in with what is already here.

Grammadee, I am envious that your LSS is so close. I really miss having one nearby.
I also shop for possibilities. I figure that even if I don't use a paper for scrapbooking, I can use it for cards or other papercraft projects.

When I first started scrapping 15 plus years ago the classes and articles usually told us to match the paper to the picture colorwise. I tried at first but it really limited my choices. All that pretty paper and nothing that matched it. I finally gave up and just started using what I want. My pages are fine and no one has ever said, “Ewww. That paper you used doesn’t have enough blue to match your boyfriend’s shirt”.

I've never shopped with photos in hand. Rather, I only buy supplies that reflect my primary scrap subject & style. Given I gravitate toward classic patterns, such as stripes, plaids, dots, etc, in neutral color palettes, everything is used eventually!
