My 15 year old has acne again now that football has started. I posted about this last year but can’t find the thread. At that time I got him the generic proactive. I don’t think he used it much. Today I asked him if he would use something now if I buy it and he said yes, if it doesn’t dry his skin out a lot or feel “gross”. I’m thinking about getting some differin gel (for him and possibly for me to use when I’m having hormonal breakouts, although I do already use Retin-A). I’m wondering what your or your teens experiences have been with it. Thanks!

My daughter has used it. Didn’t have a problem with drying skin but we didnt think it was very effective either. It seems to be the first choice for dermatologists these days. It’s worth a try though since every one is different.

My 16 year old also has acne and plays football - we just bought this on recommendation from his PCP - he’s used it just s few days so far. Sure would be nice to find something that works

I use it. I still got the occasional adult acne and using this every other day has kept my skin clear. It's retinoid properties help my skin turnover which is great for mature skin. It can be drying so I use a moisturizer with it. It's not a spot treatment so if you get acne, you can use this with your spot treatments but use it sparingly or it may irritate your skin.

I used it maybe 15 years ago, I didn't find it particularly helpful.

DD used it when she was a teen. It worked great for her, and she used it for a few years, IIRC. No drying, but a little redness/ruddiness on initial application. She tried it again a year or two ago (early 20's), but this time around it made her skin too dry and she stopped using it.

There is a product called Defense Soap. Our wrestling coach recommended it for our team to ward off ring worm and other skin infections. I got it for DS last season. He always broke out during football and then wrestling made it worse. This stuff actually kept it at bay last season. DD started getting some breakouts on her shoulders this summer from cheer. She started using it and said it really helped clear it up. It doesn't smell great but it works.

Rinse face with Epsom's salts. My son blotted it on to really bad spots that would not heal. Cleared up in a week. He hasn’t had really bad breakouts since.
He needs to make sure his hands and fingernails are very clean. Get into the habit of cleaning out under his nails every time he thinks about it.

My DD uses differin cream, which is available only by prescription here in Canada. She has beautiful skin with very little breakouts. The OTC stuff did not work. We recently purchased a few tubes of differin gel in the US since it’s available OTC for 1/3 of the price. She found the gel more drying than the cream, but it’s manageable.
My DS also used differin for 2 years, along with BenzaClin. He also had very good results. So both had very positive results.

My DS plays lacrosse in the spring and has acne problems because of the chin strap. I dont know about lacrosse, but plain soap and water plus a lysol spray. The soap and water cleans and the lysol disinfects.

My derm gave it to me over 20 years ago. It didn’t do anything for my acne. I wound up on some oral medication and that worked beautifully. Can’t remember the name of it.

I used it for my rosacea and it did nothing. Do you know that a dot of paste on acne at night works? We have done it, and it's very effective. Our toothpaste seems clear once put on so it's not even seen.
