Hi peas! I am working on putting together some images to go along with our badge for photography for our Girl Scout Juniors troop. In my intro I want to express why photography is important in not only our day to day lives, but to the world as a whole. I want to show them some powerful images that have brought about (or are helping to bring about) positive changes in our society. I am having some trouble with this, as I need to keep it on the lighter side, and a good chunk of the images that have brought about change are focused on horrors of some kind (Napalm victim, Syria refugee toddlers, etc). I would like to avoid war and human rights violations, as well as other graphic images hat would require a lot of explanation. These are 4th grade girls, at a catholic elementary school. Most are very tender hearted, and get worked up quite easily. I don’t want to get calls from parents about nightmares from brought on by the images I showed them. 😉
Right now I am planning on showing them an image of the turtle with the straw in its nose, as it’s relevant to them today (esp with going to restaurants around here lately). I’m also planning on showing them some factory working children, as those images helped bring about the labor laws we have today. I am debating showing them one of the images of Elizabeth Eckford going to school in Little Rock. Not sure if I want to get into why this was such a big deal at the time.
If you have any ideas on images I’d love to hear them. I’m also open to images depicting people’s daily lives from various eras, as well as images that show important events/phenomena from around the world. I hope this makes sense! 😁

The Kiss picture from V-J Day in Times Square? While it is war related, it’s an uplifting picture.

I remember looking through this list before, but maybe you'd find something on here: 100photos.time.comMy first thought though was the man on the moon or the picture of the situation room at NASA. To address war - what about a service member coming home (one that comes to mind is the mom in an airport hugging her baby) or the situation room photo when Bin Laden was captured. To address race relations - there has been numerous displays during many of the Olympics. I think it was Mexico where the black athletes raised a fist while on the podium. Or any Jesse Owens memes. To address women's rights - any pictures of women voting. To address gay rights - there are multiple pictures of the first couples in each state being married.

The moon landing is the first thing that comes to mind. Or even the one of the Earth rising over the moon - which I think hugely changed how we view our own world.
Also, how about the first cell phone picture? The content of the image didn't change the world, but certainly the it heralded a huge change in how we engage with photography.
In the same vein, the first x-ray.

The first one that came to mind for me was the Chinese man standing in front of the tank at Tiananmen Square.

Creation of Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks were both influenced by the photography of Carleton Watkins and William Henry Jackson respectively.

That was the first photo that flashed in my mind. This was the 2nd. I don't know if that's what you're looking for, but it's a photo I never forgot. Not only is it a photo of war and a bold photo of a girl/woman in a land where females are completely covered, it is a photo of extraordinary eyes. This was just before personal DNA tests became available. What made this girl different from a girl in Pittsburgh? Her DNA? Her culture? Her religion? The land where she was born? The turmoil she was forced to live in? What was she thinking? What emotions was she feeling? How we age. Just so much to say about these two photos.

How about some of the first pictures from Yellowstone. The expedition that brought back pictures to Washington DC that helped to make this our first National Park......they are of course in black or white but they are important pictures telling a story of wonders not seem at the time before.......compare them to some of the modern color pictures........

Princess Diana's wedding to Prince Charles. It really highlighted how the paparazzi have hounded celebrities and the consequences of such behavior.
Picture of Sandra Day O' Connor, the first female supreme court judge.
Picture of John F. Kennedy. He was the first Catholic president.

Relevant to today’s date, how about the pic of the firemen raising the American flag over the rubble of the WTC?

I would say that the first photo ever taken is probably one of the most important ones. Now, if you want to get crazy, some will argue that the first photo that was ever taken was ..... the shroud of turin. By Leonardo da Vinci. But the first official is here:
