I have crazy thick hair that's insanely curly in the back and wavy everywhere else. I tend to keep it in a short lob style cut. The problem is that I typically straighten my hair and it's SO HARD to get the back sleek and straight because of all the bulk. I'm considering an undercut, but I'm terrified I'll hate it and cry.
Has anyone ever done an undercut? Love it? Hate it? Pros or cons? Thanks!

When I was younger I got undercuts all the time, my thick wavy hair would naturally bend under at the ends with no styling. Now, my less thick but frizzy, unruly wavy/curly color treated mostly grey hair has had a keratin treatment. I don't like the stick strait look at the ends so I asked my stylist to give me an undercut. He warned me, and he was right, it hasn't made much difference at all.

I have a very minimal one right now so that I can put my hair up in a bun at work or while exercising and don't have those annoying tendrils and stray pieces down my neck. I regret nothing. It's shaved with a guard up about 2" or so, maybe more.
My dad's wife has one much farther up and it looks great either up in a pony or down just past her chin.

I have a friend who has a short bob like hair cut and she gets an under cut. I never new. She's been doing it for years because of how much hair she has. It's brilliant and I'm tempted to ask when I go for my haircut next week.

Actually what I've done twice now is to get a Brazilian Blowout. It's basically a keratin treatment that relaxes your hair. It doesn't make mine stick straight, but does remove a lot of curl. My hair dries faster and doesn't curl and frizz instantly when I step out into the humidity. It isn't a chemical treatment so there isn't any damage to your hair. I can make it 6 months between treatments. I've spent $150 each time, but it's SO WORTH it for me.

I have long fuzzy hair. Not curly, not straight. real PITA. I have a pretty good sized undercut. I hate those little hairs at the nape of my neck that would grow out and curl and touch my neck! I love it. I'm probably going to let half of it grow out though because my hair has thinned since losing weight and I need some more bulk I think. Plus I never intended for it to be as high as she cut it! That process should look like ass for about a year since I wear my hair up a LOT.

Search Chloe Brown on YouTube her channel is mainly about how she styles her hair (short lob with undercut) she is so informative.

My dad had one for a while. She has thin fine hair but wanted to do something fun. Now her hair is short with wavy bulk on top. She's always changing it.

I have super curly thick hair. I started shaving out the back over a year ago. Same cut and lines as Idahomom's daughter above! I absolutely love it. I did it for swamp neck. I don't straighten my hair ever.

Is an undercut the same as having your hair thinned? I get mine thinned out. It’s so much better now. No more big poofy mess to try and tame.
ETA: I see that it is not the same 😁

As a youngster I had an undercut. I loved it. It was not very common back then, leading to lots of comments.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go for it! I might have her scissor cut it rather than use the clippers though. I think that will make it less scary for me. Hahaha!

My DD has super crazy thick hair. She's had an undercut but prefers getting it thinned because she wears hair in a ponytail a lot. When she had it undercut, it definitely would lie smoother when she had it down - thinning it brings out the wave for her, which sounds like the last thing you want! I say go for it - it'll grow back if you don't like it!

I have an undercut over my whole left ear. I am letting it go gray so I needed a trendy edgy style to balance the salt and pepper.
A couple years ago- I started with just the back. I thought it will only take a couple weeks to grow out if I hate it. Then I started doing it over one ear but you couldn’t tell unless I purposely showed it.
Now it is dramatic and you can see it. I love it.
Btw- you need frequent haircuts to help it look fresh - I go to great clips every 25 day’s

I’ve had a traditional ‘men’s’ undercut for a few years and, now that I’m growing my hair out, I’ve decided to keep the back and sides sheared. I like the look and I love how it feels.

I have mine cut like this, about 2 1/2 inches up from hairline all the way around and I love it! So much cooler and faster to blow dry and style.

Please can we have pictures of all your successful undercuts, up and down? Models are chosen for their well-behaved hair, and most people's hair isn't, so I don't trust models' pictures. I've been stung so many times by "I want to look like this!" Mine never turns out the same without huge maintenance.
signed, THICK wavy hair, curly at the back, currently hating bob that the rain has turned into a Christmas tree
