KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!! Pay close attention when voting during the midterm elections! The school voucher system proposed by Education secretary Betsy DeVos does not mean you can choose any school you want your kid to go to. It means the public education program will be dismantled.
If your child has an IEP (individual education plan for students with special needs), kiss it goodbye.
If you have a job in special education, if you're a special education teacher, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, a para, a teacher's aide, or an ESL (English as a second language) teacher, you'll go first.
House Bill 610 makes some large changes. Inform yourselves. This bill will effectively start the school voucher system to be used by children ages 5-17 and starts the defunding process of public schools. The bill will eliminate the Elementary and Education Act of 1965, which is the nation's educational law that provides equal opportunity in education. ESSA is a big comprehensive program that covers programs for struggling learners, advanced and gifted kids in AP classes, ESL classes, classes for minorities such as Native Americans, Rural Education, Education for the Homeless, School Safety (Gun-Free schools), Monitoring and Compliance, and Federal Accountability Programs. The Bill also abolishes the Nutritional Act of 2012 (No Hungry Kids Act) which provides nutritional standards in school breakfast and lunch.
The bill has no wording whatsoever protecting Special Needs kids, no mention of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), and FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education). Some things ESSA does for Children with Disabilities: -Ensures access to the general education curriculum. -Ensures access to accommodations on assessments. -Ensures concepts of Universal Design for Learning. -Includes provisions that require local education agencies to provide evidence-based interventions in schools with consistently underperforming subgroups. -Requires states in Title I plans to address how they will improve conditions for learning including reducing incidents of bullying and harassment in schools, overuse of discipline practices and reduce the use of aversive behavioral interventions (such as restraints and seclusion). Please call your representative and ask him/her to vote NO on House Bill 610 (HR 610). PLEASE share this information with family and friends.

I cannot stand anything Trump is doing, but I have long said DeVos is the one that scares me the most. She is terrible and what she wants to do will only harm children and our struggling education system. I am proud to say I live in a state with representatives who will vote against this, but I will be sure to write them anyway,

Here's another great piece of this POS bill: I don't know if you've seen a school lunch lately, but even with this rule in place, the lunches are not great.

Here's another great piece of this POS bill: I don't know if you've seen a school lunch lately, but even with this rule in place, the lunches are not great. I think that depends on the district. Are school lunches perfect? Of course not, but they are balancing healthy with something kids will actually eat. I'd say most districts have a myriad of fruits and vegetables available daily and they do have the low fat milk. But making everything with whole wheat has made some of the food taste like crap

But, I do agree that pulling those standards is just one of the many reasons this bill cannot pass.

I’m just waiting for the Trump defenders to come in and explain to us why this bill is actually a good idea and we are just being hysterical for no reason other than Trump. I’ve been saying all along he’s trying to turn this country into a post-modern feudalistic society. This dumbass idea is just a necessary step in our conversion process. I hope he and his robber barons go down in flames. I’ll enjoy watching that.

I'll call Dept of Ed tomorrow and see if I can get clarification. I just checked the House tracker and there has been no movement on this since Steve King introduced in Jan 23, 2017.

I just did a quick search and the gov bill tracker site doesn't show any updates since 2017, and the only article I could find (Romper) doesn't indicate it has been resurrected.

Here's another great piece of this POS bill: I don't know if you've seen a school lunch lately, but even with this rule in place, the lunches are not great. My Sister-in-law works in a school kitchen and can't believe all the uneaten food left over every day. Mostly healthy veggies that the kids won't eat. Such a waste of money! I wish there were a way of getting kids to make healthier choices at school and send extra food home with the kids who really need it.

Perhaps it died the death it deserved. I wrote to my rep in the house today and got back the generic response. Let's see if he has any more details.
I should have checked the tracker --but if I had, it would not have given any more information, it seems.

I do wish they could send extra home with kids. Your not even allowed to give away the unopened milk/juice to someone other than the person who took it, so it gets thrown away.

I think I figured it out. Our 115th Congress is Jan 3 2017- Jan 3 2019. It died in THIS Congress, but we have a new Congress in Jan 2019. Yeah, King will likely reintroduce it then. I’ll wait until it’s reintroduced and then I’ll call. No way will I support this bill.

I wish there were a way of getting kids to make healthier choices at school and send extra food home with the kids who really need it. Providing healthy lunches in our school systems is important in my opinion. Giving kids what they want (unhealthy greasy foods) isn't the answer. When is it the answer in any way we raise our children? Even if school is the only place they have that they come across healthy food in a day at least they have access to it once a day. I too wish there was a way all of that leftover food before it is thrown could be saved and given out to food banks or places like that. Maybe at the end of the school day take home boxes could be made and given to disadvantaged children discretely. Instead of food trays where all of the food is thrown in together food could be given out in separate recyclable containers. If you don't finish your veggies toss them in a clean can that is there to gather the leftovers. If you do you toss the recyclable container in a box where those go. Yes, it would take money. But, our hungry citizens are worth it I believe. You could do a cost analysis on whether it saves more money to use recyclable containers vs. plastic washable containers. and go with the cheapest. As far as the rest of House Bill 610. Thank you so much Librarylady for posting about this important bill. We CAN NOT let this pass. Betsy Devos is anti education. Our public education system was bad enough in this country before she got into office. What we needed was someone in this office who wanted to bring about positive changes in education. She is like the Satan of the education system. She wants to destroy it. This bill would bring about devastating changes for our children. There is nothing positive about it. It has been put on the back burner for now, but let us keep an eye on it-so it doesn't slip past us while we aren't watching. My son is 29. I won't have any grandchildren. But that doesn't mean I don't care about the nation's children. I spent 3 years in college going after an education degree before I decided to become a professional photographer back in the early 1980's. I care very much about education.

There are 44 days until the midterm election. Figure out who is running for local, state and federal offices and who supports public ed. If we want to stop shit like this from coming down, we need to elect leaders who support public education!

His office just called me to say this has been stuck in committee since January and he does not expect it to get to the floor. so, dead before arrival.
