Walking barefoot on the carpet I have NEVER in my life walked barefoot on any hotel floor, carpet or tile. I always pack bath slippers so I still have something on when the shoes come off. Socks are no substitute.

I've never stayed in a hotel that was so grotty it grossed me out. I walk around barefoot and use the kettle and cups, it's a wonder I'm still alive.

Socks are no substitute. I'm curious, why not socks? Are they not thick enough? If the germs are the concern it seems to me that it would be easier to turn them inside out when you take them off so as not to spread the germs around before they can be washed. With slippers do you put them in a plastic bag for the trip home and then wash them when you get there? I don't wear slippers so I didn't know they were easily washable without breaking down. I'm fascinated with the things some of us do to avoid hotel yuck. (Myself included)

That's the part that squicks me out. Who decided it was okay to put a coffee pot and cups 5 feet from the toilet? I rarely see it anymore, but it astounds me every time.

I assumed you were talking about the coffee pot, but then realized I'm not certain where you are from. I've never seen a tea kettle anywhere in a hotel room. Do they have coffee pots too? Even in nicer hotels I see a glass or two in the bathroom, for rinsing I suppose. But they have a paper cover over them in those hotels. Still don't trust them. Some are turned upside down IIRC. Just no.

I'm not that picky I guess. Other than the bedspreads.
That said I have in the past stayed in some hotels that skeeved me out. But it's been years. Now I try to do a lot of research and spend a bit more to avoid things like that. That and I just don't think I'm as picky as many. Most places seem quite clean. I don't run into bits of food or hairs etc. I check for signs of bed bugs and after that, I'm good.

I am not a germaphobe but finding a hair in the bathroom grosses me out and I hate walking around the room with no shoes on. Several years ago we took a cruise (with a large group of friends) out of Miami and on the way back we all stayed one night in Miami before flying out the next morning. We stayed in one of those little art deco hotels but not one of the high end ones. We were all sitting in OUR room trying to decide where to go eat...one of our friends looks up and hanging from the ceiling fan was a pair of men's boxer underwear!!! Eeww!!

Gosh you’re a squeamish lot! Like lainey I walk barefoot, use the pillows, sleep on the sheets unchecked and shower normally. Can’t remember ever seeing anything worse than the odd hair in the bath which gets swished away with the shower then I’m good.

I hate pretty much everything about hotels. I'm not at all a germaphobe, but I find hotel rooms equal parts uncomfortable and of suspect cleanliness. I would never go on a cruise because it's like being trapped in a giant, floating hotel. So I guess my answer is - everything. Everything in a hotel room either bothers me or grosses me out. I also don't like being able to hear other people through the walls. I've gotten to where I stay in an AirBnB even when traveling for work (which happens only every other year or so). I know logically that a hotel room is probably not any less clean than your average vacation rental, but it feels that way to me. Plus they're almost always more comfortable, and the wi-fi is better, and unless you rent a condo, you don't have to worry about being able to hear people in the next room. I'm on the same page as you....everything about hotels gross me out which is why we purchased an RV...I get to travel, see the country, visit family & friends with the comfort of my home with me. My bed, my bathroom, etc....And I'm not a burden on family & friends, nor do I feel any obligation to anyone which is another area of discomfort for me but that's another story.

Just no. A kettle for boiling water in, they're never in the bathroom usually on a shelf near the wardrobe. I don't use the bathroom glasses because that's not something I do at home. I did once watch a documentary that claimed the bathroom glasses were being washed out with the toilet brush to save time...let that sink in everyone

Everything. I hate hotel rooms. I try not to thing about anything that might have been previously posted. I did not read any of them; I can't. And I'm not a germaphobe. I'll eat your sidewalk cupcakes. I didn't care if my kids didn't wash their hands before they ate but hotel rooms eww.

I do the normal check and also don’t use the bedspread. I usually bring a small travel pillow and a blanket and use the sheets on the bed. The ice bucket doesn’t bother me because most have of a bag you put inside where the ice goes. I do need to remember about the remote, gross! Traveling soon and kind of don’t want to read the rest lol!

I put them in a bag and pack them in an outside pocket of my luggage and bring them home in that bag. I have specific slippers I take for travel that are not as bulky as my house ones. Socks... Well, I don't love socks but I will wear them with my shoes. Even at home I don't paddle around just in socks. Always with slippers when I'm home.

I just refuse to think about it. But when I first walk into a room I eyeball it to see how the room is generally.
The last hotel I stayed at my daughter booked. I was a little iffy on it but I didn't want to hurt her feelings. It was an older hotel. The room overall was decent. Not the best but it wasn't 'dirty'... the only thing that skived me out was that it had a little kitchenette (we didn't use) and there was actually a 1/2 size dishwasher that looked gross. I didn't go near it. lol...
I always wear socks and pull the top bedding off. I usually have my own pillow (this time it was impossible with traveling).. but they were okay. Bathroom was decent except you can see where the water from the shower had damage the wall and it was 'fixed' but water still got everywhere.. not sure why they just don't correct it for good but whatever... no backup water or mold to be seen....
but otherwise.. I just don't 'go' there with what if's.

Oh I used to work for a hotel (Drury Inn) years ago. People like to stuff their dirty magazines between the mattresses too!! About once a year we would throw out huge stacks of them. (we saved them to see how many we would get each year.. lol) It happened A LOT...

The pillows!! I am SURE they do not wash pillows after every guest! I bring my own and throw theirs on the chair or couch. We also bring a can of Febreeze and spray around the room just to give it a better scent. I don't do candles because I don't want an accidental fire or something!

I must be a disgusting heathen. Other than obvious signs that a room has not been cleaned, and not particularly caring for bedspreads (I just turn them down away from me if I encounter one), I don't get too bothered by hotel rooms.
I stay at a Hilton property whenever possible, and they are consistently clean and comfortable across properties.
I worry more about serial killers and robbery than germs. Except legionnaire's disease. Musty smelling air conditioners make me worry a little, but I just shut it off once the room is cool enough.
Someone walked into my room at a Holiday Inn in downtown Tucson once. We both freaked out. I called and complained to big boss about the dangerous dump that immediate boss had sent me to and was promptly moved to the Ventana Canyon, so that all worked out nicely.

We found, at the bottom of the closet, a pair of women's underpants with a sanitary pad still in them.
We called the front desk. I mean, REALLY. How gross can you be? This was a nice hotel and they were so upset about it.

The only thing that really grosses me out is if the room is dirty. I walk around in socks, not barefooted because I know people walk around in their shoes. I do use the cups in the bathroom if they are covered in paper/plastic. The sheets and pillows don't bother me, neither does the tv remote.

Her mom would always travel with a pair of cheap rubber flip flops that she would wear in the shower. I don’t see how that would help anything since the water will hit the bottom of the tub or shower and splash up and onto your feet anyway. The shower may not be cleaned and then you walk barefoot throughout the whole room. You can get athelete's foot or an infection, especially if you have a cut on your foot.

A lot of things creep me out about hotels. I immediately remove their bedspread and check the sheets for hairs or bugs. I also cannot sleep with a hotel pillow any longer. I was sharing a hotel room in Palm Springs with a girlfriend and she freaked that I hadn’t brought my own pillow. She told me the hotel pillows were probably shoved under someone’s ass during sex. I never again travelled without my own pillow. I am too suggestible and couldn’t get that image out of my head. I also bring a candle in a lidded tin and start burning it right away to hide that hotel smell. Why did I open this thread? Now every time I go somewhere I'm going to think of my pillow as a sex pillow.

Ever since I read about people "washing" their underwear in the kettle / jug in hotel rooms, I gag when I even think about making a tea or coffee in a hotel jug.

We stayed in an expensive downtown Chicago hotel last year. It was disgusting. Dried blood stains on the dust ruffle, splatters of who knows what on the wall, and dust everywhere. My husband doesn't ever want to make a fuss. I'm going to start speaking up about these things and not listen to him. It was nasty.
