I've been traveling a lot lately and have noticed "things" in hotel rooms that I would rather not see. What grosses you out in a hotel room? - hair on the wall (Makes me want to gag) - dirt around the drain or in the overflow drain (Why or why can't they pour some bleach down there to clean it out) - a sink or tub that doesn't drain fast (Am I standing in someone else's shower water?) - carpeting (What's in there anyway?) - electric outlets that pull out of the wall when you have to maneuver to get your plug in - old telephones (Who uses them anyway?) - any bed covering that is not washed EVERY time there is a new guest - dust behind the t.v. - blinds or curtains that have the tiniest tear in them - fabric that is not updated - a/c units that are in the wall and not central air-conditioner
What is your pet peeve and how do you avoid it?

Every time I lay down in a hotel, I think about the comforter and that it was probably not washed. I try to remember to bring a blanket from home, but usually forget and have to get past the thoughts of what could be on the blanket. Yuck.

I try not to think about it.
My husband, when he was working Vegas, would lift the mattress to see if there was a dead hooker under it. Yup, a guy in his office found one( many years ago)

I can literally say I have never thought about any of those things, apart from a disinclination to use the bedspread, and I picked up that bit of squeamishness from 20 years of Pea threads about hotel room yuckiness. Lol. What small amount of germaphobia I have, I got from the Peas!

I hate pretty much everything about hotels. I'm not at all a germaphobe, but I find hotel rooms equal parts uncomfortable and of suspect cleanliness. I would never go on a cruise because it's like being trapped in a giant, floating hotel.
So I guess my answer is - everything. Everything in a hotel room either bothers me or grosses me out. I also don't like being able to hear other people through the walls.
I've gotten to where I stay in an AirBnB even when traveling for work (which happens only every other year or so). I know logically that a hotel room is probably not any less clean than your average vacation rental, but it feels that way to me. Plus they're almost always more comfortable, and the wi-fi is better, and unless you rent a condo, you don't have to worry about being able to hear people in the next room.

Bedspreads instead of duvets blanketed by sheets that are washed after every guest. If we find them (and it's rare that we do these days) we automatically fold them and put them in the closet for the duration of our stay. We don't really run into dirty hotel rooms any more. Well, dirty as the things the OP is listing. Lysol/Clorox wipes are great when traveling for germs! But I have to tell y'all about a hotel we stayed in about 15 years ago. We came into Biloxi in the middle of the night without a reservation. Our fault. So we got stuck in something called the Best Inn. Looked fairly run down but we were out of options. The first thing I noticed when we were unpacking is that the supplied toiletries were all from different companies and other hotels. Should have seen that for the sign it was. The place was horrible. The curtains were so torn and hung so poorly the gaps let in way too much light, so we had to stuff clothes in them so we could sleep. Bugs. When you lifted the bedspread and looked under the bed, you could clearly see the line where the vacuum reached and I swear, the carpet under there hadn't been vacuumed in years. It was grey instead of the blue or green of the carpet. I'm a bit anal and non-germy things that bother me are: - All the brochures, room service info, letterhead and instructions. As soon as we enter I grab them all and put them in a drawer out of sight.
- Coffee maker and other things on countertop we won't use. If it is in a separate coffee bar, that's one thing. But when they out it on the sink (gross) or some other surface we put it in the closet or under the sink so it is out of our way.
- Shower curtains. Okay, this could be a germy thing. It's not that they seem dirty, though I'm sure they could be. But they're easy take down out up ones so they can be washed. But I hate it when they stick to me as I shower not certain if they are clean. It makes my skin crawl. So we frequent places with walk in showers, and call before making a reservation if the info is not available online.
- Curtains that aren't black-out or don't close all the way. Can't do anything about the black-out aspect, and don't often come across it. But if they don't close completely we cross one over the other and out something in front of them to hold it. Often DH's bike because we are traveling for his races.
- No valet parking. Try and avoid it, and just deal with it when it is not an option. We try to stay in the official race hotel, and if there isn't one, then one close by. So, this is just something we sometimes just have to deal with. Not a big deal in the scheme of things. But when you're in and out of our hotel as much as we are, and it's literally 100* plus outside, you don't want to have to cross a large parking lot or garage to get your car several times a day. Especially before an evening out. And in some hotels, parking is scarce so it's an issue. Also, with all of his triathlon gear, and chair and things I use, it is a lot to take to our room. Much easier to pull up and have the bellhop there with a cart for everything except his bike. Instead of lugging all of that across a parking lot.

Hairs and slow drains are the most common hotel icks for me.
I really don't like finding food bits, either - I have found peanuts, a lemon slice, and other little leftovers in the corner or under a bed or dresser in hotel rooms. It's not that the food itself grosses me out (I mean, it's not nice, but whatever), it's that it makes me think the place has not really been cleaned.

I am not a germaphobe and really don't have issues that most people do. My pet peeve in a hotel is when the bed doesn't have a base and stuff can go under there. I hate to lose a sock or shoe. One time I checked into my room and there was a guy in there showering with the door open. Probably skeeved him out more than it did me. We got a new room at a discounted price.
ETA: I used to hate it when the curtains didn't shut all of the way and the sun woke me up in the face. Now I take a pants hanger from the closet and clip them shut.

I try not to think about this. At all. I try to be as exhausted as possible when going to sleep in a hotel.

I always wonder if the comforter has been washed and if the bathroom floor is really clean.

Generally, not much.
Actual evidence that the room was not cleaned completely (hair, food, trash), would bother me. Very obvious dirty bedding would gross me out and I'll ask for a different room.
The rest? Not much. I try to think of hotel rooms as not much different as restaurants or any other public place. Restaurants are actually grosser.

Hotels by their very nature are gross. Supposedly the #1 germiest thing in a hotel room is the tv remote. Since I almost never turn the tv on when I travel, it isn’t something that I need to worry about, but I’ve heard of people who put it inside a ziplock baggie or wipe things like the remote and light switches down with Clorox wipes. My BFF always pulls the comforter totally off and throws it on the floor. I don’t go quite that far but I do fold it down so it’s not close to my face or arms. Her mom would always travel with a pair of cheap rubber flip flops that she would wear in the shower. I don’t see how that would help anything since the water will hit the bottom of the tub or shower and splash up and onto your feet anyway. I like the hotels that have the comforter or bedspread sandwiched between two sheets that get pulled off and washed.

A lot of things creep me out about hotels. I immediately remove their bedspread and check the sheets for hairs or bugs. I also cannot sleep with a hotel pillow any longer. I was sharing a hotel room in Palm Springs with a girlfriend and she freaked that I hadn’t brought my own pillow. She told me the hotel pillows were probably shoved under someone’s ass during sex. I never again travelled without my own pillow. I am too suggestible and couldn’t get that image out of my head.
I also bring a candle in a lidded tin and start burning it right away to hide that hotel smell.

Trying to imagine where there is space for a dead hooker and how the cleaning person didn't find her. That would certainly be a princess and the pea moment for me.

We use most of the hangers, and truthfully it would bother me to see it hanging there. But I have some small clips I can throw in the suitcase we always travel with so they are always available. They can be stored with the laundry pop up basket (another peas suggestion and I love it), wipes, and fold flat containers I use to organize things on surfaces. If y'all have any other suggestions like these I'd love to hear them! Thank you!

We stay primarily in hotels with duvets because reusable comforters gross me out. But if we end up staying in one that do have comforters, I toss it in a corner and ask the maid/front desk for a new one.
The other thing that grosses me out is dirty/peeling/stained grout or caulking.

Finding random dark curly hairs in places they shouldn’t be. Like on the sheet when I pull the top cover off. Or in the sink. I don’t have dark curly hair, so it’s not mine. That’s pretty much it.

Thguy we know found the woman in the box spring. I think he said it had been flipped over and the fabric cut open. The sick thing ? He was not the next person to use that room! The body had been there maybe a week?

I never go barefoot in hotel rooms. I bring my own pillow. I check the towels, linens, bedding as soon as I get in my room (for soiled stuff, dirt) If it smells weird, I’m out of there!

Ugh! I hate everything about hotel rooms! I always have a can of Lysol and Lysol wipes and I spray and wipe everything. I check for bed bugs too. As others have mentioned, I always remove the bedspread and put it in the closet. I’m happy most hotels no longer use them. We travel often and I just suffer through hotel rooms as best as I can. My husband thinks I’m nuts. Lol
