I couldn't find a thread. Hard to believe no one started one last night! Anyway, so far it's hard to gauge these people. I can see the Goliath tribe getting very annoying with all those egos in one place. Pat was annoying at first but I hated to see him go out like that. I had to laugh when the one showmance couple was talking about how glad they were to be on the same tribe and how they would stick together, etc. I predict a pretty quick tribe shuffle. lol

I hated the end. What a horrible way to go out.
The editing was a little different tonight, which I was glad to see. Kudos to CBS for not spoiling the medivac (at least not for this episode - I did hear there was a preview where you could see the stretcher coming from the boat, but there was no indication that it was this week).

This premier had a different feel than previous ones. It was interesting to see how many couples/2 people alliances formed so quickly. With Survivor though, you know that virtually all of those couplings will be undone in just a few episodes as they get to know each other better. It's always so disappointing to like a person the first episode and then they turn out to be a jerk down the road.
The first challenge on the boat was pretty cool and it seemed like the camera man had barely got a chance to focus on the puzzle board before Christian had it finished.
Natalie is going to be a problem. How could anyone go on Survivor and think 24 hour BITCH was going to work. I don't mind people trying to get organization and a shelter going and I know that usually having a leader gets things done but, wow, she completely went about it wrong. Instead of being collaborative she was just bossy and bitchy.
I liked the cowgirl. I love the "blerd"--never heard that term before. I think the nerd couple are super cute!! The medical evacuation was so sudden and without context since there wasn't any filming on the transport boat when the injury happened.

I am so happy that Survivor is back on. My first impressions are that I love the Big Bang guy, the Goliath people are really obnoxious and full of themselves and as much as the big guy irritated me I hate that he was taken out of the game. I was looking forward to him pissing everyone off.

I also have to add that anyone that tells you they are charming are not charming. One of the Goliath girls said that but I can't remember which one.
The wrestler guy was hilarious listing all of his knicknames. I expected him to be unlikable but he seems pretty sweet. We'll see how it goes as the game gets harder.

Goliath will implode quickly. Too much testosterone and ego. Couple of the women already bitches.
Loved when Dan pulled idol out of his pants lol. Great editing!

I thought it was a great premiere show. I'm glad they spent so much time letting us get acquainted with several of the players rather than going into competitions right away. That Paul who was medivaced (sp?) was pretty rough around the edges and offended some of his David tribe with his crude jokes at first but I think he had proven his value before he was injured. They'll likely miss his practical knowledge in the future. And that Natalie on the Goliath tribe... oh my. You just can't neglect a strong social game and expect to be around for long... that's a losing strategy for sure. Also... so happy they're back to a more traditional Survivor game play mode... no Redemption Island... hooray, I hated that.

I also really like the premiere show. I loved the new opening on the ship (looked like a ship to me) and how they had a challenge on it straight out of the bat. I loved how they revealed the tribes before that-David vs. Goliath and how the David team reacted to that telling the story of how David slew Goliath and became a king. I really loved how the Goliath team picked who they thought was an uncoordinated guy to run the challenge and he ended up writing algorithms for slide puzzles! Ha! Just goes to show you how you should never judge a person by appearances which I think some people on the Goliath tribe are used to doing. Nerd guy (I'm sorry I don't know his name yet) is a gem to keep on the tribe because of his gift with puzzle challenges.
I thought it was a great first episode and was very happy that we got to see a lot of views of camp life and a mixture of who the players were. DS pointed out the writer of "The School of Rock" right away to me and said that he also acted in it as Jack Black's friend Ned Schneebly-the guy who's identity Jack Black steals so he can teach at the school. He's also written a couple of other movies. I was surprised to see him there. He certainly doesn't need the money and according to the other players he's been on The Amazing Race already. What do you all think? Personally I think he's been given priority treatment as far as a chance to play-I would think Survivor wants the exposure. If that's the case I personally don't think it's right. I rather have a regular ordinary person have a chance to play and have a chance to win. What do you all think? Plus he's all ready had a chance on The Amazing Race.
Natalie made a huge error on the first day. I don't care how successful she is at her job-and she made a point to point it out. She might not be used to manual labor at this point in her life but this is Survivor. When you get to the beach if you want to play Survivor it's imperative that you roll up your sleeves, pitch in and work! Working hard physically shows that you are a hard worker and a team player. If I ever got on Survivor that's what I would do. Work extremely hard physically every single day. Standing there with her arms crossed around herself she looked like she was better than anyone else. According to the others she didn't lift one finger to chip in at all. She won't last long and if I were on that tribe I'd be anxious to put her name down.
Weather wise-oh my gosh! I hope they are on the very tail end of rainy season because the weather sucks! Are they not allowed to pack rain gear like rain jackets at all? Why not? Is it to make it seem more dramatic to the viewers to see the players shivering like crazy at night in their soaking wet clothes in the shelter/half shelter if they haven't finished building it yet? Is that wise if they get hypothermia? I know we've had Survivor seasons during rainy seasons. I just hope this one was filmed during the end of rainy season in Fiji.
The construction worker who was cracking jokes in his coarse language did end up building a pretty great shelter-he got it up in a fairly short amount of time compared to the Goliath tribe. I was so sorry to see him go the way he did. I think by that time his teammates had grown to respect him and care for him. You could tell during the good-byes on the beach.
Sue-I agree with you on the no Redemption Island concept. I'm so glad we're back to not having that too.
I also hope we have awhile before they mix up the tribes. I'd like to see how this concept works out for awhile. I'm rooting for the David tribe.

I know! We FFWD through commercials and I had DH rewind to make sure we hadn't missed something! I know they showed rough seas and boats rocking like crazy but after that, I was confused for a second and thought I missed something! I felt bad for him and hope he's OK.

I liked the first episode.
I prefer the David tribe over the Goliath tribe. The writer is who set me off. When they asked who they would vote in and he said “Big Band Theory” I wanted to puke. To me that was childish and basically being an douche bag. Just say the man right here with the navy shirt and khakis. That is the adult way to handle it.
Loved him (navy shirt and khakis) and the girl (dark hair and glasses) talking and making an alliance. So fun. Then you have the dark haired guy and the blonde on Goliath talking about their showmance.....which started two minutes after they meet.....insert eyeroll!
Should be a good season. Natalie would be my first choice to go. BOSSY is to kind of a description!!!

Yes, Natalie either wants to go home right away or is totally unaware of her behavior. I was sorry to see Pat go. It was painful to watch. Glad is recovered. The instant showmance did deserve an eye roll.

I'd like to see how this concept works out for awhile. I'm rooting for the David tribe. This is what I don't understand about players like Natalie (we've seen others do this in past seasons)...Presumably they've seen "Survivor" before (because how else would they even know to apply? if they're ordinary people I mean, not some celebrity recruited). But even then -- if for some reason they'd never seen a single episode of "Survivor", not one. Then they're accepted to be on the next season. Wouldn't you IMMEDIATELY binge on every season you could? Wouldn't you take some notes about types of challenges, and problems the tribes had, or shelter building methods, or whatever?? Was it this episode where one gal was showing another gal how to weave the palm fronds into a roof (I've been binging past seasons so I might be mixed up), and the one asked "how did you learn to do this?" and she replied "youtube". -- Wouldn't you do the same thing if you were chosen to be on? So Natalie should KNOW that you don't just stand around like that. omg. I liked this first episode, already more than the entire previous season. For some reason that one is blank in my mind, and I'm not sure I even watched every episode. And I couldn't begin to tell you anyone's name from that season. But this David and Goliath one I liked. I love the puzzle guy from David and he should be a great asset if they keep him around, because there are always puzzles. Remember Bob from Maine on the Gabon season? He was a physics teacher and always flew through those puzzles (I remember one with gears that he finished very quickly). So it's good to have those types around. My only complaint about this new season is that I've been binging on old seasons and I've gotten used to watching the next episode immediately. Now I have to wait a whole week? sucks....

Good season. I like the surprises that aren’t released in previews. Makes for entertaining TV when they haven’t ruined it. I like a few of them right off the bat. The couple that practically got married on the first night will need to tone that down quick...I like the guy, but not too sure about the girl. I like that he found the idol.
Natalie needs to go. Hopefully that was just a show and editing because I can’t believe she would do that on the first day.

Why is there no pea pool? PayPal charges too much to do it anymore. I think some Peas were researching alternate methods of electronic payment that were less $ or free. I don’t believe a solution has been found yet.

I think it's great that he found the idol... but he should've been smarter about keeping that a secret... not let 2 other tribe members in on it... it wasnt even a cute elaborate necklace... Got a late start... finally had some free time to start in on Survivor.. I think most people will be team David to start.. just the whole underdog thing... I felt so bad for the guy who got medivac'ed... especially since it seems like most people were not liking the lawyer and his laziness... and while I do believe his story... I think the not sharing it before or all the tears about it were fake.. just trying for sympathy... I'm not buying the lawyer.. Looks to be an interesting season

I thought this was the best premier episode in years. It was the first time in ages I felt like we got to know the people on the tribes. I think part of that was the length of the episode and part of it was only having 2 teams. I already feel more invested in these people then I have for several seasons.
So glad they are not doing redemption island.
I don’t think they have had them extinguish their flame if they hadn’t earned fire for a long time. I don’t remember them actually handing out flint, but I just assumed that was one of those behind the scenes things like transporting them to and from the challenges.

Add me to the list of peas who absolutely loved this premiere episode. I was glad to get a season without returning players. I absolutely love survivor and have watched every season multiple times, but it’s nice to see some new faces.
Since there wasn’t a pool for this season, our family read the cast bios before the first episode, and we each chose our own winner pick. We gave everyone the option, at the end of that first episode, to either keep or change their winner pick, and each one of us decided to stick with our original pick.
Since you all are fans, you might appreciate what we did for dinner the night of the season premiere.
In past years, I’ve served things like rice and beans, peanut butter and chocolate, and cracked open a coconut for dinner. It was fun in theory, but it didn’t provide us with that great of a meal. This year we decided to change it up. I made about 10 different items, and presented each item to my family at the dinner table one at a time, survivor auction style. Everyone had a pile of monopoly money, and they each bid on the items they wanted. A couple were face value, like a big bowl of salsa and chips with a pitcher of ice cold lemonade. Also a steak dinner that I knew only my husband would bid on. A few others were covered first: like a bottle of ketchup, then when my son won that item, I grabbed a plate of mac & cheese to add to his prize. He always covers his mac & cheese with catch up, so he was super excited. Another item, covered, was a plate specifically made for my vegan son, but I had to encourage him to keep bidding so that he would win practically the only item he would be able to actually eat that night. Another item was a small jar filled with Hersheys kisses. Then tucked inside the jar was a secret advantage all rolled up. It allowed the winner of that jar of candy to choose his seat first while we watched the show. Of course he chose everyone’s favorite recliner. There was another advantage, also covered, that allowed the winner to change their winner pick to any other player if their original choice got voted out before the final five. It will be fun to see how that one plays out. Probably everyone’s favorite item up for bid was a folded over McDonald’s bag, that two of my kids kept trying to outbid each other for. When my middle son won that bag, expecting a big Mac meal, he found a bowl of white rice inside. Later on he was tickled when he bid on a covered item, which was the big Mac and fries. By the time I got all of this set up however it was pretty much cold. But he didn’t mind, and they all had a really great time.
I told a few of my friends about this crazy dinner we had, and they didn’t really seem to get it. But I was sure you all would get a kick out of it. I loved doing it, and all the kids, including my husband, who typically doesn’t watch survivor with us, said they loved it and wanted to do it again next year. After all the hoopla DH sat and watched the entire episode with us, and now he’s hooked!
Can’t wait to join in the season with you guys this year!

Hi everyone. After much searching I wanted you all to know that I finally found the Dalton Ross recap article. I can't do links but here is the site address ew.com/recap/survivor-season-37-premiere/ I hope you can find it there. I haven't read it yet. I was waiting for a migraine free day which I finally had tonight. I'll read it in a bit.
monklady123-yes this was the episode where one woman turned to another and said, "how did you learn to do this" and the other one said, "you tube" when they were weaving palm fronds together. I agree with everything you said in your post. Of course if I was chosen for Survivor I would binge watch every season and episode. I have literally watched every season and episode since the very first one-but remembering them for me is a problem. But like you said I would also study up on anything and everything I could to give me an advantage out there. Making a fire, learning how to weave palm fronds, shelter building, practice my swimming and diving below the surface holding my breath-I love doing this in the sea anyway when I am snorkeling with fins and a mask, but what I really want to do is learn how to stay down longer. I've read a bit about free diving and I'd love to take a course. I only want go down up to 30 feet but I'd love to be able to hold my breath for 4 minutes or so. There is a course I've been looking at in St John USVI. If I were chosen for Survivor I'd make sure to have taken it before I went. It'd be amazing for water challenges and also be such an advantage for gathering food from the ocean. I'd do even more than that for preparation-any and everything I could think of.
I think there are still people who just don't get it. Who won't take the time to prepare. It happens every season on The Amazing Race where you'll have a contestant who shows up not knowing how to drive a manual or stick shift car. Every season it gets them into trouble. I think it's the same with Survivor. You will always have these personalities who think that for them they will get by without needing to know how to do something or can get by not needing to do manual labor. They learn it on the fly, when they get there or will get by on their other qualities.
I agree with many of you that this was an outstanding first episode. I can already tell how much I'm going to like this season compared to last season which was very dull.
wrongwayfeldman-I loved your Survivor dinner that you made for your family! What an amazing amount of thought and dedication you put into it and what fun your family must have had! It sounded like such a fun and exciting evening. Can I come to your house next year for dinner?

This is a fantastic idea! I love it! Unfortunately, we are empty nesters, so it's just DH and me, but this would be so much fun to do with a group! SaveSave
