My nephew plays football on a high school JV team (10th graders.) They played a rival team last week. They beat the rival team last year as freshmen. Nephew told us today that the other team was playing a real nasty game - more than we could see, of course. Any time they would tackle one of our players, they'd take two fingers and jab them into the neck of our player. Three players have bruises from this (game was Thursday). My nephew was also choked as soon as the ref turned away after the tackle was called. Also one of our players was tackled, two-fingered in the neck and the rival player yelled at him to "Stay down, Motherf*cker!"
My SIL was asking what she should do. The players are afraid to tell their coaches, thinking they'll think they are being wimps. Us mama/auntie-bears think this goes beyond the normal "rough and tumble" that goes on while on the field. Older siblings/cousins have not experienced this type of targeted behavior.
Should the parents say something?

My kid doesn't play football, but does play Varsity Basketball. I'm told that a big part of the game is getting under the opponents skin, so there is a fair amount of mouthiness and language so that part wouldn't bother me. But the fingers to the neck would bother me a ton and I would encourage the kids to talk to the coach, they need to know this team plays dirty.

I think the time to say something was during the game. Whats to be done now? I say move on and learn from this.

According to my DH who coaches two different high school sports, that needs to be reported to the coaches immediately and should have been during the game. If reported as it was happening, the coaches could speak with the refs and tell them to watch what that team was doing more closely.

My son plays JV and apparently, stuff like this is extremely common (Los Angeles area). At the most recent Thursday game, his team got clobbered by the most polite team ever. My son was shocked that there was zero badmouthing, jabbing, kicking, etc. Son said the guys were super nice. Its a shame all games aren’t like that.

Yeah, those aren't "antics," to me that term suggests playful goings on. This was more harmful and needs to be reported.
