Hello all! Hope your week is off to a good start & full of happy miles! My ankle/foot is feeling better since I did something to it on Saturday, but I haven't put it to the test either. I'm just taking the week off of running and hoping that I get through the 1/2 on Sunday morning. Fingers crossed! The neat thing about this race is that it runs right past where my grandmother lives so I'll be staying with her and she gets to be my in-person cheerleader instead of long distance cheerleader. She's planning on waiting at about the 1 mile mark and then the 12 mile mark - we're both looking forward to it.

That is awesome that your grandmother will be able to cheer you on!! I hope the foot holds up.
Today and yesterday I have had two awesome walks. I LOVE my new shoes! They are cushy and feel great!! The temperature is a bit cooler and the humidity is also down. Yesterday was about 50% humidity and today about 60%. Temps both days were around 70. With all three of these things combined, I complete two 6 mile walks walking at an average pace of 11:56 per mile. Same pace both days. My slowest mile was 12:10. Wow!! It is definitely a combination of all 3 things (temps, humidity and shoes) that allowed me to walk it that fast.

Yoki, I'm so glad that your foot is feeling better! I think it is awesome that your grandmother gets to see you run. eebud, isn't it amazing what a difference a pair of shoes can make? I'm glad that you have been able to get out and enjoy the weather - you are walking as fast as I run!

You can keep your leg and foot muscles well worked without running so as to not lose muscles or stamina. That's so cool you get to have your grandmother cheer you on. Twice!

Jumping on the new thread - so glad to hear everyone seems to be off to a great week! I'm about as ready as I'll be for my 5K on Saturday - my goal is under 36 minutes, but I'd be grateful for under 38 minutes! Regardless, it's the Susan B Komen run and it's a great cause. Hope everyone has a super week ahead!

Bumping this thread up! FreshPaper, WELCOME! So glad that you are joining us in your C25K journey. We are here to cheer you on. I am so excited that Anna*Banana is going to run the Pittsburgh Half with me. I had such a great time running it this year that I knew I wanted to run it again. And it will be even more fun in 2015 with Anna! If anyone else is interested in running the Half or the full Marathon and wants their registration paid for, message me and I'll hook you up with an awesome charity who would love to have you run for them.

I'm glad that you have been able to get out and enjoy the weather - you are walking as fast as I run! Ha! Well, maybe you need to come to Dallas and run the Hot Chocolate 15K!! I might be on my own for this and that is ok too. I have an old friend that I haven't seen in many years. We reconnected via FB. I haven't seen her but I did have lunch with her DH once who is also an old friend. We all went to college together. Anyway, I have no idea how fast she runs but she told me that she usually runs the Hot Chocolate 15K. It will be great to see her even if we don't stick together during the run. She has dropped somewhere around 100 lbs since she started running. Such an inspiration. I can't wait to see her. The sad thing.........we don't live that far from each other. LOL

Funny thing is that I really liked my last shoes. They were Saucony's. The first time I went to Run On, they didn't bring out any Hoka One One's. I am such a novice at this, I have no idea what to ask for. These are awesome!!

It was cool enough to wear sweats while walking the dog this morning, so perfect running weather! I'm really glad that I started running a year ago, when the weather was turning, otherwise I might not have stuck with it. Fall running is so much easier than summer running. I got in 3.5 miles this morning, loving the chill during my walk intervals. I also love getting all my miles done by 10 am.
How's everyone else doing today?

Ran my first longish run in 2 weeks, thanks to a respiratory infection, but I got in 8 miles and felt pretty good. I'm gearing up for my next half marathon next month, but I've been in race shape since I ran my last one in June, so I think it will go well. I am enjoying the cooler mornings as well, but I run really early, so I am ready for time change and more light at 5:30am!

Is there an app that will call out each mile marker. I am working on my stamina, trying to run one mile, walk one mile, etc.

Is there an app that will call out each mile marker. I am working on my stamina, trying to run one mile, walk one mile, etc. The Map My Fitness/run/dog walk/etc. apps all will tell you out loud when you hit each mile and tell you the time you did it in. The basic versions used to be free, I think they still are. Have re you thought about looking at Galloway's system of regularly alternating running and walking throughout all your miles? It is a much easier way to build stamina. Many of us here use it.

I've had a great training week. I've been run/walking every other day on the rail trail. It felt very good. I went to the gym or took a long walk on the off days. Today I'm incredibly sore and achy, so I'm taking it easy. Just some stretching. I may take the dog for a slow walk later.
It sure is nice running in the fall -- the leaves are starting to turn and the air is so dry. I had no idea what it felt like to run without being drenched in sweat. Quite pleasant, really.
I think I may need some new shoes, too. I have some sauconys that I've been wearing since mid April. For some reason, my big toe joints are very painful right now. I think that's bunions -- never had them before.

Your big toe starts slanting in towards your other toes - can get bad enough where it overlaps your second toe. You also get a joyful bump that forms on the outside of your foot at that joint. There is pain, related to the deformed joint and that bump rubbing against your shoe. I hope that you are just having joint pain in your toes and don't have bunions to go along with them. I am nursing a huge blister on the bunion on my right foot that I picked up on my 7 mile run Monday. I've started having to run with a silicone bunion cover on my right foot for long distance runs (I forgot on Monday). I am considering surgery, but it is a several month healing process and I am not ready to stop running for that long yet.

I got new shoes this week too....Mizunos...exactly like my old pair but a new (and very bright) pink. I had an OK run today....somehow it was just a slog for me. :/
I don't ever race but my DD ran a great 6k last Saturday.....24:09! Definitely a PB for her for cross country. I'm assuming a group of runners would appreciate that. My DS has his first cross country race tomorrow and it's also 6k. Although he hasn't said anything, I know he's hoping to beat his sister's time but I'm afraid that won't happen for him. I guess we'll see.

I'm still slogging away at my rehab. Doing really really well. Ahead of where I thought I'd be, pain wise, but not as far as I was hoping, miles wise. I'm afraid my Army 10 Miler is going to be a more walk:run rather than a run:walk. If you know what I mean. I'm doing it, even if I get swept up, which I'm hoping I won't. I can still power walk the 10 miles if I have too. Enjoying reading everyone's new shoes and then going over and looking them up. I'm a shoe-hound, whether it's dress-up, casual, boots or running.

My family left yesterday evening and it was back to work today. I did get a 3 mile run in Tuesday morning before I met up with them. I took a wrong turn thinking I was on a thru-street, nope it was a parking lot and no way out, but to turn around and go back out the same way. I was so thirsty, so I stopped and walked home about 1.5 miles, showered, and walked another 1.5 miles to meet up with my mom and aunt for the day. The rest of the day, I just sat with them. So tiring (believe it or not).
Good job to everyone else!

Am I the only one how just goes out and runs? I have no idea what tempo runs are, I don't warm-up or cool-down. Just put on my gear and go.
I don't have a phone and don't wear a watch (sport watch or otherwise). I do have and use a Nike shoe sensor that I activate when running (not walking) that keeps track of my runs, etc.

I hope so too! My big toe looks aligned properly to my untrained eyes. I'm going to mention the pain in the joint when I go shoe shopping. Thank you annabanana -- that link was very informative. I'm glad I took yesterday off -- my body feels much better today. Time for another rail trail run -- the mapmywalk shows 3.2 miles for the distance I've been going. I'm going to wait until it warms up to 60. I'm such a wimp!

You must be proud of her. I hope you enjoy your new shoes - I've never run in Mizuno's, but love the look of them. sbartist, when I am following my Galloway app, I warm up, but skip the cool down. More often now, however, I just lace up and go. The first two run intervals are much harder as my muscles feel as though they aren't flushing the lactic acid during the walk periods, but then they "wake up" and start acting properly. You'd think I would learn and would warm up, but I dont. It is raining hard here this morning- I'm glad that I ran yesterday and that today is a rest day. My friend and I cut our dog walk short and only did one mile and the dog is dripping wet (and pouting because we didn't do the usual second mile of our route).

I do have and use a Nike shoe sensor that I activate when running (not walking) that keeps track of my runs, etc. I used to just go out and run, without issue, when I was younger, but consciously stopped that when I transitioned to the Galloway method. Can we just abbreviate that GM? Because I religiously followed the app when first running this way, because it was soooo different than I was used to and really needed the "cheat-sheet" of the app, it has the warmup built in so I got into the habit. The couple of times I forgot my cell with it and just started running, oh boy did I regret it. So, I know it does keep me from having that stiffness and extra work that almost hurts to get moving (I'd call that "cold-backed" in my horses). I'm going to say it's from age more than anything. I never had any stiffness or extra effort needed when I was even up to my mid-30's when first running. Sucks to get old!

Well, I occasionally have to jog across a street but that is only a few feet. LOL I do take a phone though because I listen to audiobooks. I also like to keep up with my walks, how far I have gone and at what pace. That is because I am competing with myself. I don't warm up or cool down other than my first mile is usually my slowest. So, I guess I kind of warmed up in the process of power walking the first mile. My walks yesterday and today were a tad slower than Monday and Tuesday but still very good times. One day it was a pace of 12:03 per mile and today was 12:18 per mile. Each day was 6 miles or a tiny bit over. I think it is that age thing that Anna is talking about. LOL By Friday, I am usually really pushing to get a great time because I know I am taking off Saturday and Sunday.
