Owner of the company was an FBI informant also....did it to get himself out of trouble for being arrested for helping immigrants cheat on driver's tests. He has been out of the country for several weeks. His lawyer was just on GMA. Owner will return ASAP is requested.

The amount of energy released by a crash at 60 mph is unbelievably high, so I'm not surprised there were so many deaths. Especially since they were not wearing seat belts.
And although these limos are legally extended from SUVs, remember that the major safety features of the SUV like side air bags and such are taken out of the vehicle when it's turned into a limo.
What a horrible tragedy.

I've been in an auto wreck going 55mph and was hit by a drunk driver. We rolled several times and ended upside down in a ditch. I had a seatbelt on, dd did not (I was not aware of this at the time). I ended up hanging upside down by the seatbelt, she was thrown out a window. I unbuckled myself and crawled out a window, she was laying in the grass nearby. Neither of us broke any bones nor got any stitches. We were pretty bruised up and traumatized though.

I watched this on the news too. Horrifying. Prayers and caring thoughts for those that loved them. So sad.

What a horrible tragedy. Due to the force of the impact, the engine block was found BEHIND the driver's seat. That is a huge impact. Our bodies are fragile and the sheer G-forces of the impact would implode in the inside of a person's body, without a huge amount of exterior damage. This is so horrible.

I was at my class reunion on Friday night celebrating with the drivers’ twin brother. He also came to the event on Saturday night so he obviously wasn’t yet informed of the tragic event. We don’t know of exactly what happened until they complete their investigation and while I no longer knew the driver, I hesitate to call him a murderer as some comments on social media will have me believe he was.

Thanks for sharing Zoey. You are right about makig assumptions before we know the facts. My condolences to everyone involved. Do you know if this would have been a intersection that the driver would have been familiar with?

jumperhop The town is not very local to where we graduated from nor where I believe he lived based on what I’ve been told by people who did keep in touch with him. I live in MD and drove that road going back to my hometown on Thursday night and it’s a doozy if you’re not familiar with it.

Possibly because he wasn't licensed to drive a limo has some people blasting & blaming him.

it's the sudden stop that, obviously does so much damage
a 160 pound person going 30 MPH has 30 Gs of force acting on their body
and that's if they have a seat belt on
with out a belt - it's like 150 Gs of force
i'd imagine their internal organs were just destroyed -

What a horrible tragedy. If a safety belt is available in whatever you are riding in, always buckle in! It does not matter how big the van or limo is. You greatly increase your chance of survival if you are buckled in. This includes taxis. Buckle up.

HOrrifying. I cannot imagine the pain the families are going through, esp. the family that lost all 4 daughters and 3 sons-in-law. My DD has a friend whose mom always plans extravagant parties and has had the girls picked up in limos before. I didn't ask about safety measures, but one time my DD told me that they were all "falling around" in the back. I was irked but did not realize til now the full extent of the danger. Never again. I will have to drive her myself.

This story is also local to me. The driver had a CDL license but did not have the type of license required to transport more than 15 people. Clearly the limo was in poor condition because it failed a DOT inspection recently and should not have been on the road.
That road is treacherous on a good day for people who drive it regularly. It was inspected years ago by DOT after many complaints and tractor trailers who crashed through that restaurant parking lot. Not sure what they did to make it safer but it clearly was not enough.
As far as the limo driver goes, I will wait for the results of the investigation before calling him a murderer. He is dead and his family is mourning him, regardless of how or why this happened. Apparently his wife is being harassed on social media. Lovely.

They've arrested the son of the owner of the limo company. Apparently, the vehicle was stickered as out of service. Someone removed the sticker and put the vehicle back in service. Most likely it was him, as he ran the day to day operation of the company. If this is true, he needs to be charged with 20 counts of murder. Speechless. Not at you. At the actions of the owner’s son.

Have they mentioned why the limo was out of service?
i doubt they've had time to analyze 'black box' data
and i wonder how long until toxicology reports are in
there were no skid marks at all -
so one wonders...did the brakes fail, was the driver high, or maybe he was distracted
it it were just an unfamiliar road/intersection you'd think he'd have at least attempted to brake
gina

But yeah, if the vehicle couldn't pass inspections, I bet the brakes failed. that would be my initial thought - but vehicles fail inspections for a whole host of things it's the lack of a single black mark that is so odd insufficient brakes will fail an inspection - but they'd still cause a black mark of some sort if there were no brakes they'd have figured it out right away in the trip gina

My sister was driving, when we left our house the brakes were working just fine, and a few miles down the road we came to a rural intersection, and when my sisters put her foot down, the brakes did absolutely nothing. The pedal just went all the way to the floor, there was no resistance and there was no black mark or anything on the road. Luckily, there was no one coming, she drove straight through the intersection, and put the car in neutral to slow it down. We came to a stop, and I remember all of us looking around thinking "did that really just happen"? We were only a few miles from home, so my sister carefully drove us back home. I don't know anything new about this terrible accident, but it can happen that the brakes are working, and then they don't.
