I saw this on the news this morning. So horrible. Have they said anything about what the cause was yet? I heard that one of the women told her aunt that the first limo that the company sent had problems, so they replaced it with the one that crashed. But that the woman told her aunt that it was making a lot of noise and she didn't know if they would survive. Twenty minutes later they were all dead.

He ran a stop sign so either the brakes went out or he was distracted. Two bystanders were also killed.

An article I read earlier said that was a dangerous intersection. Other vehicles have missed the stop sign too - including big rigs.
I know this sounds stupid, but I'm having a hard time understanding how they all died. The only pictures I've seen of the limo have been of the right side, and it doesn't have any damage. I suppose though they were probably thrown around inside?

I suppose though they were probably thrown around inside? I've been wondering the same thing, watching reenactment videos. It seems he was just driving too fast at 60 instead of 30, missed his turn and went straight into a ditch, no collision with another car. I would thought at least someone could have survived? Safety in limos has always been my fear, not that I ride in them, but when I watch the real housewives no one wears seatbelts and it makes me think what if you are in an accident? This is just so sad.

When I first heard the death count was 20, I assumed most would have been people in the parking lot getting hit and thrown.

He did hit an SUV in the parking lot and also hit and killed 2 pedestrians. He was NOT licensed to drive that vehicle and the vehicle should not have been on the road. it failed inspection a month ago.

It was a 'Frankenstein limo", meaning that it was sold as an SUV and then torn apart and extended. It was not licensed to be on the roads in NY as it hadn't passed. The driver also did not have a license to drive it.
The limo missed the sign at 60, went into the parking lot and plowed into the van, going close to 60. It hit like a ball being thrown into a wall. None of the people inside were wearing seatbelts, so they all crashed into the hard sides of the limo and each other.

This is so heartbreaking and sad for all of the families. I couldn’t figure out how they would all pass away. But maybe mom’s husband heard it right.

Many are, but they also need a specific license and inspection in most states to make sure it was done in a safe way.

I can't figure out how they got 18 people into a limo. None of the limos I've been in (4) would ever carry that many passengers.

To be fair, all limos are "frankestein limos". All limos are cars which are converted afterwards into limos. We actually own a limo.
The seat in the back should have had the standard shoulder seat belts, but the seats on the sides would have had lap belts. Almost NO ONE wears their seatbelts in a limo. I don't know why though. Ours has them, and our contract states we aren't responsible if you choose not to use the safety equipment.
You wouldn't believe the stuff drunk ppl do too. I'm not blaming the victims - just stating that if they had been drinking (which they are allowed to do of course) that they may not have been wearing or thought to wear their seatbelts.
Our car has to pass a federal inspection, plus the DOT comes in and inspects all our records. Having said that, there's a limo company here that doesn't have any of that, and I would imagine they're probably running on regular insurance not even limo/business insurance. That is super expensive!
I want this car to go away ASAP. We sold the last one and in 24 hours had another one - just to flip it.

There are many limos that can hold more than 10-12 ppl (ours). If it was an suv also, it's bigger. Sounded like it had seats on both sides, not just a j-seat on one side. You can double your occupants then. HOWEVER, in our state once you hit 15 ppl, you must have a different type of license and your insurance is going to triple. My husband does not have to have a chauffeurs license. (we can hold 11)

That was a time before SUV's!

I saw a story on the news this morning saying a lot of limos do not even have seatbelts! They are not required like buses I guess. Really, really sad!

Owner of the company was an FBI informant also....did it to get himself out of trouble for being arrested for helping immigrants cheat on driver's tests.

This horrific accident is near where I went to college. Very hard to process the magnitude of the accident. Details are slowly coming forward. One family lost 4 daughters (3 whose husbands were also killed), another family lost 2 sons, a college professor was killed......all young and in the prime of their lives trying to do the responsible thing by renting a limo to celebrate a birthday. The driver was not licensed to drive the limo and that particular limo failed inspection last month. It was a high impact collision. Only the driver of the limo and the front passenger are required to wear a seatbelt according to NYS law. As you pray for the families of the deceased please pray for the first responders, many whom are volunteers in that area. I can not imagine coming upon that crash. dailygazette.com/article/2018/10/08/some-of-those-lost-in-the-schoharie-limo-tragedy-sisters-brothers-young-parents

I believe criminal charges are a certainty but no amount of punishment or monetary sum to the victims families will ever make up for this horrible, preventable tragedy.

This story horrified me, it’s so sad for the families of all the deceased. My first thought was like some of you have mentioned: how did all of the occupants die? But I guess it makes sense because people generally don’t wear seatbelts in limos, so if the limo crashed at high speed and then rolled, I can see why they all died. Just horrific. Then I thought about how one of my son’s friends hired a Hummer limo for his birthday a couple of years ago. There were 21 kids plus the driver and another adult in the limo – that’s twenty three people! I can't figure out how they got 18 people into a limo. None of the limos I've been in (4) would ever carry that many passengers. This is the limo my son and his friends went in. 23 people including the driver:

This is so sad because it was preventable. The chauffeur was not qualified. The limo failed a safety test. No one wore seat belts (but it's highly doubtful they had 16 available for use). And remember this too: all it takes is ONE unrestrained passenger to kill multiple people. Those people all hit each other and the limo as though they were going 60 mph.
We are doing a 2 month RV trip soon, and this sort of story really gives me pause.
