Many of the things mentioned above, but if a store offers wipes to wipe your cart off, I always use those. I take 50 mg of Zinc every other day all year long. I can't even remember when I last had a cold as it has been that long ago. The lozenges that have Zinc in them might help, but I would think you would need to be sucking on them all day long for weeks on end to get the same affect as taking the mineral/element. You can find Zinc in any store that sells vitamins.

Elderberry syrup. Also cayenne pepper with some honey or brown sugar in warm water. That's also great for sore throats--works so well and helps with congestion.

Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands! This! As soon as you get in the house. Before you eat. Pretty much any time you're near a sink.

I would use it but my family can’t tolerate the smell, even if I put the clothes through an extra rinse. None of my towels etc smell at all.

Hand-washing, of course, and I keep homeopathic Aconite in my handbag for the first signs.
But I think the best preventative for me is getting enough sleep.

Lots and lots of vitamin C. At the first hint of a sniffle I start getting my kids to take vitamin c and I do the same. It works for us. Haven't had a cold in the house in a few years. How much vitamin C do you and your kids take? We have the Vitamin C chewables and we take two a day. But maybeif we feel a cold coming, we should take more? I have two kids in college, so I always worry about them getting sick and having midterms, or finals!

Don't touch anything out in public that you absolutely don't have to touch. Try to avoid touching your face. Wash your hands often. Last year when dd was traveling to college auditions (vocal major), she was so worried she'd get sick. We were flying around and staying in a lot of hotels and she had some auditions back to back weekends. We would wipe every hard surface on the airplane seats with Lysol wipes and I would spray down every hard surface she might need to touch in the hotel room with Lysol spray. She carried hand sanitizer and let me do all the door openings. She managed to stay healthy (me too). We swear by Zicam for heading off a cold when we start to feel sick. That and bed rest early on, seems to kick a cold to the curb for our family. I like the rapid melts in orange flavor. That's what we did this past April and May. My college freshman was trying out for her university Dance Team in April, and it was still winter here. Kids were still getting sick. I bought her a ton of cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer. She was in a single, so at least we didn't have to worry about a roommate sharing germs! I gave her recommendations of how to open doors with her sleeve, hand sanitize before eating (all those students touch the food serving utensils). I admit I was a little crazy, but she stayed healthy!
Then we did the same in May when our high school freshman was trying out for her high school Pom-Poms!

How do you handle public bathrooms? Wash your hands or hand sanitize? I'm never sure if I wanna touch the handles, soap, and paper towels and get all those germs, or just touch the door and use hand sanitizer when I get out!

White vinegar works too as a sanitizer I would use it but my family can’t tolerate the smell, even if I put the clothes through an extra rinse. Is the Lysol you use the new Lysol Sanitizing laundry product? We got some and I use it to wash my nursing student's scrubs when she has a nursing job over the summer.

We also have the chewables and don't take them regularly but at the first sign of a cold we take two in the morning, two at supper and two at bed for two or three days. DD is away at school also and I sent her with a bottle of unsweetened and she still got a bit of a cold during mid terms but I think not getting enough sleep and stress caused that and IMO it would have been worse without the vitamin C. She agrees with me and has passed this "wisdom" onto her roommates and they say it has helped. FWIW I never use hand sanitizer or anti bacterials. They make my skin itch. I do the usual hand washing with soap and water but don't go overboard and I don't remember the last time we missed chool or work for illness.

I'm never sure if I wanna touch the handles, soap, and paper towels and get all those germs, or just touch the door and use hand sanitizer when I get out! Most public restrooms around us have auto water and soap dispinsers. I don't like it when there are no paper towels, and you have to pull open the bathroom door. I use my paper towel to open the door if they have paper towels. If no paper towel and you have to pull the door open, I try to use my elbow to open the door. I wish all the doors opened out. Our local Mc Donald's doesn't have paper towels, and you have to pull the door to open the door. So the workers have to wash their hands, then touch the door to open it.

Airborne tablets are my friend during the "sick" season. How do you handle public bathrooms? Wash your hands or hand sanitize? I'm never sure if I wanna touch the handles, soap, and paper towels and get all those germs, or just touch the door and use hand sanitizer when I get out! I always wash my hands (I can't stand hand sanitizers), I try to use a paper towel to open the door and I use my wrist/elbow to turn on/off the water if possible. I am thoroughly grossed out by those hand blow dryers - to the point that I will double-time it to get out of there if someone ELSE is using one - they're so disgusting.

Within the first 24 hours of feeling a cold coming on, I put 4 or 5 drops of hydrogen peroxide in each ear and let it fizz for 5 minutes or so. And I take 1,000 mg of vitamin C every two hours for the first 24-48 hours (unless it loosens me up, then I back off), while pushing fluids.
Both of those ideas came from my chiropractor and seem to work well.

Zicam. Then some more zicam. Add more zicam. Repeat every 3 hours.

Oscillococcinum and Sambuca elderberry chews or syrup both homeopathic stuff. I also load up on probiotics. Your immune system is anchored in your gut, so make sure your gut is healthy! And vitamin C just cause my mommy always told me so! I had a friend with a sick child. This was all recommended to her and the child felt better within 24 hours. The mom was amazed. Having said that it was a fever sore throat type illness. I am currently battling congestion in my head and lungs. Would those items help my illness???

Lots of hand-washing. Small hand-sanitizers in purse and car to use when out. If husband is sick, Lysol wipes on all frequently touched surfaces. Last time he was sick I even gave him his own TV remote so I wouldn't have to share! When I get a cold, Cold-Eze really does ease my symptoms. Lots of Vitamin C endorsements here; will have to try next time I feel something coming on.

For those of you that use Zicam can you share with me what product you use? Nasal spray, nasal swabs, tablets?

Just FYI on the Zicam: CR - 6 reasons not to take zinc for your coldDH used to swear by it - I never used it because of some other meds I have to take. However, he stopped using it when he developed weird, numbing cramps in his calves. Turned out they were related to the zinc. Just more information to help people make the best decisions for themselves!

Don't pick your nose! lol. I read once most colds start from viruses coming into contact with mucus membranes (nose then eyes).

I am a preschool teacher so I come in contact with A LOT of germs every day. I wash my hands frequently and avoid touching my face.
I make it a point to wash my hands the minute I walk in the door if I’ve been at work or out in public and always before I eat anything.
I don’t often use hand sanitizer but I always get a flu shot. I can’t remember the last time I’ve had a really bad cold. I do, however, get the stomach flu once every 2 or 3 years. For some reason I can’t seem to avoid that.

I try to eat pretty healthy home-cooked meals. I only drink water. I try to stay as active as I could (recovering from my last surgery, so I'm limited). I've been with 2 families in the past week with toddlers and I happened to get sick. I have thrush, a yeast infection, asthma irritation with a bad cough, etc. I feel like I have the beginnings of the flu (I got my flu shot already). NO idea how I got thrush as I haven't been on antibiotics lately. Weird!
So, my answer is to limit time with toddlers who go to preschools--they're breeding grounds for infections. I know I didn't get a yeast infection from anyone (I supposedly got it b/c I'm weaning off of my estrogen and that could be a side effect, per my doctor)........ But this ICKY feeling (achy, barking cough, headache, fever........) had to come from them.

They help boost your immune system, but are best taken at the very first sign of illness, or if everyone else in your house is sick, start taking them to help you ward off the germs!
