It seems like lot of people are currently....sneezing, sniffling, coughing, blowing their nose, etc...
Trying to take preventative measures. I have been flushing with neti-pot daily. Trying to drink a lot of water. Drinking juice(vitamin c).
What's your best "fend off the cold/sickness" advice?

Lots and lots of vitamin C. At the first hint of a sniffle I start getting my kids to take vitamin c and I do the same. It works for us. Haven't had a cold in the house in a few years.

DH Zycams himself to death to stave off or shorten oncoming illness. i don't know if it really works. he still gets sick. me, i just give in to it and just hydrate and get as much rest as possible. getting the rest is the hardest part because i can never sit still much less lay around in bed for any length of time. most of the time i just go to work and medicate there.

Wash your hands frequently, for longer than you think is necessary and avoid touching your face.

Besides what others have said, if I feel like I may be coming down with something I take Cold-eze (zinc). It usually makes my symptoms disappear in a day.

Don't touch anything out in public that you absolutely don't have to touch. Try to avoid touching your face. Wash your hands often.
Last year when dd was traveling to college auditions (vocal major), she was so worried she'd get sick. We were flying around and staying in a lot of hotels and she had some auditions back to back weekends. We would wipe every hard surface on the airplane seats with Lysol wipes and I would spray down every hard surface she might need to touch in the hotel room with Lysol spray. She carried hand sanitizer and let me do all the door openings. She managed to stay healthy (me too).
We swear by Zicam for heading off a cold when we start to feel sick. That and bed rest early on, seems to kick a cold to the curb for our family. I like the rapid melts in orange flavor.

When a cold infiltrates the family I start the day with a hot lemon & honey and have lots of chicken soup available.

Avoid touching your face unless you just washed your hands.
Invest in a good quality mask and wear it when you are out and about. Check out Vogmasks. You can buy them either from the company itself or Amazon.

Be very conscious of not touching your eyes, nose or mouth until you get home and can wash your hands with soap and water. I keep hand sanitizer in the car in case I absolutely have to clean my hands out in public.

Exercise outdoors every day, even in the winter. Don’t overheat your house. Wash your hands. Pick a relatively warmer day and open windows to let in fresh air.

I was never a big hand washer until about ten years ago when we had one cold after another. We started washing our hands when ever we came home from shopping and neither of us has had a cold since. I think shopping baskets are the worst germ carriers.
I also carry hand sanitizer in my car and purse and use it if I am going to stop and eat and there is nowhere to wash my hands.
Being vigilant about washing my hands when I've been put in public has made a believer out of me.

Don’t touch door handles. Don’t shake hands. Stay away from anybody under 18.
Stay away from anybody over 18.
Don’t put your purse on a surface. And wipe it down. Clean your keys, your phone, and the tops of cans.
Clean the remote.
Lysol your towels.

As others have said -- WASH YOUR HANDS! And do not ever -- as in NEVER -- touch your face unless your hands have just that second been washed. Easier said than done, but this is the most important thing.
I also take Emergent-C every day.

Thanks for posting this, OP. I just sat in a coffee shop where someone at the next table, which was practically touching ours, had a terrible cough. Every single time she coughed, she turned away from her own table/friends and turned back to our table to cough into her sleeve. She was seated next to a wall, and I found myself wishing she would have turned to the wall side instead of sharing her germs with DD and me. After about the 20th time, we finally left. Putting the Cold-eze on my shopping list now. Ugh!

@legacy Girl, I think I would have told her to knock that crap off. One thing if she didn't have elsewhere to turn, but she did.

When I get that first hint of a sore throat, I start zicam and airborne. Gargle with listerine several times a day. Drink lots of orange juice!

White vinegar works too as a sanitizer I would use it but my family can’t tolerate the smell, even if I put the clothes through an extra rinse.

Oscillococcinum and Sambuca elderberry chews or syrup both homeopathic stuff. I also load up on probiotics. Your immune system is anchored in your gut, so make sure your gut is healthy! And vitamin C just cause my mommy always told me so!
