Do you tip your professional photographer when doing family pics, senior pics, etc.? If so, how much? Thanks!

I am a photographer (side business, not my sole source of income) and I have never been tipped. I know some who have been though. It is not necessary, but greatly appreciated.

No. I am paying them directly for a service. Their fee should be sufficient unto the service.

I would tip if it was someone other than the owner of the studio taking the pics.

No, because I assume I hired a professional for a service that they appropriately charged. Personally, I feel the tipping issue has gone to an extreme. When we tip it is done generously. However, I don't believe in tipping the landscaper, photographer, donut maker, yogurt cashier, appliance delivery person.

Heavens no. Tipping is so far out of control it is ridiculous - both in who people think should be tipped, and the amount they think should be tipped. I really wish restaurants would just pay servers an appropriate wage and forget about tipping.

I've never thought of tipping a photographer.

Where do you draw the line?
I tip when it's appropriate and I feel that I tip well. Sometimes I feel like the whole tipping thing has gotten out of hand.
I work in daycare, I go over and above every single day. I don't get a tip, but I don't expect one either.

I would tip if the photographer went to a location far from where their business is located.

I was definitely thrown when I paid ours most recently and she had a tip line. I didn't know what to do so I did 10%, but given the cost it was a pretty generous tip. I think next time I will being a check and avoid that whole situation.

I really object to tipping people who can set their own prices. That includes hairdressers and massage therapists and would include any other professional who is paid fairly for their services. I guess I feel that way because I've never worked at a job where tips were part of the culture, and many times those I'm tipping are making many times per hour what I do. As a nurse, then teacher, and then librarian, I have often gotten nothing for my efforts but complaints.

I would tip if the photographer went to a location far from where their business is located. Photographers typically add travel costs to their fee if they're going outside their immediate area.

And that is fine, but I can still make the choice to tip or not . My husband and I had our engagement photos done at a location 6+ hours away and it included a hike to actually get to our desired spot. I felt it was appropriate to tip in that situation because the photographer really went above and beyond.

Generally I would say no to tipping for photographers but in your case I agree it was a really nice thing to do!

I wouldn't tip a photographer if I was already paying for their services. To me that is the same as the cable repair guy, or the electrician - you pay for their service, but you do not tip them.
