Are you serious?!?! Any safety equipment should be provided as part of their job. Please tell me they don’t pay for their own uniforms too. A bulletproof vest is a minimum necessity in my opinion. Shame on them for painting cars instead of supporting the safety of their police staff! This infuriates me.
My dream would be to have some type of bullet-stopping fabric that still allows freedom of movement and comfort for a full uniform. And a full head helmet that would protect their heads at all angles without limiting visibility. And the same should be given to all military men on active duty. No one should be made to put themselves in a vulnerable position to be shot anymore. Surely we either have the technology or someone needs to start developing it immediately. If guns are allowed in the hands of the populace, full protection against bullets needs to be provided to all enforcement personnel. Anything less is not acceptable. Your husband has my respect and gratitude for all that he does to protect society. I’m curious, what is the average cost do these vests? And how many years do they last? What causes them to become outdated? Normal wear and tear on the exterior fabric reduces their effectiveness?
DH pays for all his uniforms and in fact I just got back from paying to get his patches put on some of the new uniform tops he just purchased. That was another $30 right there on top of the cost of the tops and pants. Then you have duty boots, belt and belt attachments, ammo...it's a huge list of stuff but the uniforms really get pricey because he rips his stuff sometimes so it's something we buy often.
As for the vest.. from my understanding over time the materials break down and the vest becomes useless.. I think in general vests last around 5yrs (at least DH current one is this way) and his was around $2,200 they have someone come and custom fit you for it. He has a swat type vest he wears on raids and that was cheaper at $1,500 and didn't need to be fitted for so they have some slightly cheaper.
Some officers are spoiled and their depts pay for almost all their stuff, but some depts just don't care so it's up to the officer.
Ok, My husband is spoiled. All of his uniforms were paid for and he could trade them in if they were damaged or faded.
They pay for a bullet proof and a raid vest...every couple of years they are replaced but not his boots.
Now that he is in Detectives they gave him 2 polos, 2 long 2 short sleeve t's, 2 BDU's, his duty belt, his gun, mag, light, mace, asp, radio and handcuff cases. He also got a new weapon, so now he has several department issued weapons. On top of that every December the Detectives are given a clothing allowance to offset the cost of dress clothes.
I couldn't imagine paying for uniforms and the vest. It's amazing how different each department is. Luckily our department higher ups take care of the guys/girls as much as they can.
