This one hits close to home. My best friend's husband is a Major with this department. They got the call while out on a family outing around 3pm yesterday. She dropped him off at the scene. She didn't hear from him until around 12:30am when he came home to get somethings and his car. Then he went back out to continue with the manhunt. I have several friends with husbands that are part of this department. Just so sad.
Antwan Toney was 6 days shy of his 3 year anniversary on the force. He was 30 years old.

Officer deaths make me angry. I feel they should result in the death penalty every time.

Our thoughts are with them.
Today we lay one of our own to rest. Hubby is dusting off his motor gear and hanging up his shirt and tie to particpatie in the motor escort. Our prayers are with all of our LEO families as we face the senseless deaths and attacks. May your community find peace and comfort, from our family to yours hugs.

Officer deaths make me angry. I feel they should result in the death penalty every time. I don't want t to cause hurt or create a controversy, but why is a LEO life any different to any other public servant ? I was attacked and almost drowned when I was a nurse, but I wouldn't expect the killer to have been treated any differently . I encountered violence on a daily basis as well . Not the right thread....start a different thread out of some decency. Thank you.

I have been praying for this family ever since I got the breaking news. My daughter has been a LEO for 1 1/2 years, and she has already had to wear her mourning badge twice. Grieves me!!!!! I ache for these families. @leowife, praying for your husband's department too!

officer Toney had no idea when he got out of his car the level of evil he was encountering. RIP That's exactly what happened here to a NYS trooper who was a friend...Nick Clark...RIP Officer Toney. Hope they find the bastard that killed him.

As the wife on a retired LEO, mom of an LEO, and civilian administrator for an LEO agency who lost 2 LEOs in June (one was one of my best friends), my heart is crushed for his family. Many prayers for his family both blood and Blue. I also pray that those on the manhunt are safe, and protected while searching for the bastard that did this.

I saw this last night when I checked the news. This is my county!
My prayers were already started even before I realized just how local this is. My heart hurts for his family and fellow officers.

This so sad. May his memory be eternal.
A MA state trooper was stabbed multiple times after a car chase in the western part of the state on Friday. Praying for his recovery, also. His assailant was also only 18 years old.

The police found the suspects, one in custody and they shot and killed the shooter, said he had "an edged weapon" that he wouldn't drop. What an incredible waste of life all around. The suspects were only 18 and 19 years old, can't imagine why they thought this would work out in any way.

This makes me so sad and angry at the same time. Why can we not develop a heavy duty yet breathable and comfortable bulletproof material for all police uniforms? Surely we need to put a focus on this. Sending an officer out without full protection just feels wrong when you have so many people with guns willing to shoot at them. Do they at least wear a bulletproof vest as part of their daily uniform? I need for these cop killings to stop!

Answer the last part of your question: some depts don’t even provide vest for their officers and make them pay for it and they’re not cheap at all, DH didn’t have one for awhile until we could buy one..each vest only last so many years so it’s not like a one and done type thing. He’s been a cop for over 20yrs and has been through many vest but all on our dime which sucks since they care more about paying to change the paint colors of police cars more than a officer being protected but that’s just my personal rant lol

Any safety equipment should be provided as part of their job. Please tell me they don’t pay for their own uniforms too. A bulletproof vest is a minimum necessity in my opinion. Shame on them for painting cars instead of supporting the safety of their police staff! This infuriates me. My dream would be to have some type of bullet-stopping fabric that still allows freedom of movement and comfort for a full uniform. And a full head helmet that would protect their heads at all angles without limiting visibility. And the same should be given to all military men on active duty. No one should be made to put themselves in a vulnerable position to be shot anymore. Surely we either have the technology or someone needs to start developing it immediately. If guns are allowed in the hands of the populace, full protection against bullets needs to be provided to all enforcement personnel. Anything less is not acceptable. Your husband has my respect and gratitude for all that he does to protect society. I’m curious, what is the average cost do these vests? And how many years do they last? What causes them to become outdated? Normal wear and tear on the exterior fabric reduces their effectiveness?

What causes them to become outdated? Normal wear and tear on the exterior fabric reduces their effectiveness? DH pays for all his uniforms and in fact I just got back from paying to get his patches put on some of the new uniform tops he just purchased. That was another $30 right there on top of the cost of the tops and pants. Then you have duty boots, belt and belt attachments, ammo...it's a huge list of stuff but the uniforms really get pricey because he rips his stuff sometimes so it's something we buy often. As for the vest.. from my understanding over time the materials break down and the vest becomes useless.. I think in general vests last around 5yrs (at least DH current one is this way) and his was around $2,200 they have someone come and custom fit you for it. He has a swat type vest he wears on raids and that was cheaper at $1,500 and didn't need to be fitted for so they have some slightly cheaper. Some officers are spoiled and their depts pay for almost all their stuff, but some depts just don't care so it's up to the officer.

My daughter's department pays for a new vest every 5 years, new boots once a year, belt with gear/gun/taser, and 3 uniforms. The department did give her new pants one time she was injured in a foot chase and her pants were torn. We also bought her another vest that the department doesn't provide for SWAT situations, etc. It was very expensive. And the vests really don't cover much (just the torso). Her department is amazing, and she has no intention of leaving. I pray with her on the phone before every shift for wisdom and safety in every situation and for each officer on shift each day!!!! It's not a rote prayer but one from the heart and needed EVERY DAY!

When I think of the obscene amount of money paid to actors and sports figures, it really bothers me. Mainly because policemen, firefighters, nurses, and teachers are so underpaid for what they do. In my perfect world, there would be a huge redistribution of funds.
Why should people who entertain us have more value than people who protect us and educate our children?

@leowife & @horse scrap - Please give your family hugs from me and thank them for what they do/did every day.
Yes, they found him and and he was killed. He was given verbal commands that he didn't heed. He had what they think was a lawn mower blade behind his back. He refused to surrender. No other officers were injured. So now 2 families are forever changed. Actually, many more to be honest. This was the first officer killed in the line of duty in the county since 1993. And that was the first one since 1966, I believe. Officer Toney's GCPD family will never be the same either. My best friend had to sit and wait while her husband was out there for hours in this search. My heart hurt so much for them and all of the LEOs out there this weekend.
So many people (his sister and others that knew him) have shared on social media about him. He was a happy person who loved life and loved his job. He wanted to make a difference in his community. There is a video out there of him playing basketball with another officer and some kids. He died doing what he loved and what he wanted to do from a very young age.
I didn't know him. But I have seen how he has touched many through this. May he rest in peace and his memory be eternal.
