It's time.....we are having to revamp the way I store my photos on my computer and I don't know where to go! Do y'all store all your pics in Photoshop, or do you just import the ones you want to edit? I hope there are many more options than PS, because we do NOT get along. It isn't intuitive for me, and it's brought me near tears out of frustration more than a few times! Is Lightrooom that much different?
I've been using Picasa for years and between it not being supported anymore, and my storage/duplicates mess I've made, since I have to revamp it all I might as well start with something new. I just want a simple place to store and sort, a little touch up editing. Geez, if I could store ALL my pictures on my iphone that would be the ideal set up for me! Sort into albums, minor editing capabilities....sigh.
So help me out, where do you store the majority of your photos?

I store mine on Smug Mug and Shutterfly (both places) just in case. I pay a small monthly fee for Smug Mug and Shutterfly is free. I also periodically back them up to an external hard drive.

I use Win7 and store my photos in the Pictures library. I have a folder for every year and subfolder for every event/batch of photos (labelled as 2018_10_31 Trick or Treating for example)
I back up to an external drive and via Carbonite.

I have an iMac so I use the photos/cloud for that. I also use dropbox and google photos for back ups.

I just import into PSE to edit but my pics are stored in Photos on my Mac plus backed up to an external hard drive (Time Capsule), to iCloud and to 2 other online sources - Flickr and Dropbox.

I have millions of photos so an online cloud storage would cost me a fortune. I store them on my laptop by date, and back up on to a couple of external hard drives. I do worry about not having any off-site storage but I do have some of my most precious photos on Flickr.
I'm also trying to get better at deleting photos so I don't have quite so many to worry about.

I have all my digital photos on Shutterfly. I recently started uploaded to Amazon Photo, too.
One of my projects for retirement is to upload all the older photos I have backed up on CDs. Also, I want to buy a scanner for photos and negatives, so I can upload all of those, too.

Fwiw photo files are not store in PS(E) or Picassa. You can use the programs to view, edit and organize the photos stored on your computer. Currently my photos are store on my computer using the regular file structure Photos>Year>Month>[files labled and organized by date]. They are also stored in Google Photos (over 80k files) which automatically organizes them by date, has facial recognition and amazing search function with zero tagging from me. I've searched everything from dates, color, holidays, specific items like pineapple, train and ice cream to general things like school and strong. There is an editing component but it isn't as robust as Picassa, which I also loved. I moved all my photo editing to my phone where there are a ton of amazing free or cheap editing apps.

I've used Picasa for years. It's not supported but it's only a photo viewer. I do all editing in PSE.
I use the regular folders in Windows for storing/sorting since Picasa is only a viewer.
You need to begin with a file naming structure that works for you. I prefer to have everything sorted by year-month event. My folder names are 2018-10 Channel Islands NP 2018-10 Mojave Pres 2018-10 Joshua Tree NP. I also have a folder for my phone photo dumps. PhonePhotos 2018-05-01 thru 2018-05-31 PhonePhotos 2018-06-01 thru 2018-08-31. I know this creates duplicates but I only download and back up my phone photos if I've gone on a trip or have something special I want to save.
I backup with portable hard drives and Amazon Photo (although I'm behind on this).

I just use windows, and store them under My Pictures. The files are separated by year, then by "originals" and "edited". Anything I'm thinking about using in my scrapbook is a copy in "edited", so I can keep the originals untouched. Under "edited," I have them in folders by layout. I use a monthly prefix (1. for January, 12. for December) followed by the title and the number of pages it will be (I make a lot of multi page spreads). I like it because it's free and it's convenient. I use BeFunky Photo Editor and Collage Maker for editing and for putting multiple images and odd sized images onto a standard print size. It's also free.

My photos are backed up to Google and on an external hard drive as well. Now, the organization of those photos is a mess. I need to work on that.

I store mine on my computer, then eventually move the photos to an external hard drive. I use Photoshop for editing, but not storing.

I do, I've just never thought about using it as a backup, if that makes sense. I've only ever used Flickr for hosting images for blogs and this forum. Weirdly on there I also file my images differently. Strange how different sites make me think in different ways!

Um. Im supposed to store them somewhere besides my albums and instagram? I shoot iphone only.
I have about 50,000 photos saved from when my kids were little/with my ex husband. Not one of them ever got printed.
I print from my phone every month. At least a hundred if not more. I’m pretty ok with not having oodles of backed up images. I’ve lost way more than photos in my life. I was just discussing this the other day with my husband. And I’ve had to start over so many times. Pictures were the least of my worries.

julie5 I think sometimes it can be liberating to 'let go' of holding on to things like old photos. I'm sorry because I know from your other posts that you've been through lots of tough times, but your resilience is so inspiring to me. I love that you get your photos printed too. I've just got a new phone with space for a photo printing app so I am excited to keep up with my printing again. I do have a "proper" camera but my phone has mostly replaced it now.

Y'all have brought up some great points, and I do need to clarify that I keep them on my computer; I guess a better question is what do you use to edit, and how do you organize on your computer? DH has our computer backed up to an off site service so I'm not stressed about having my photos saved/stored somewhere else. I just have a mess of duplicates and "sometimes I can see that folder, sometimes I can't" problem that I'm overworked with and don't know how to sort and fix. Ugh. And also did I mention PS gives me hives?

I just bought the iPhone 8 and haven’t figured out the portrait mode but it looks great! So I’m hoping to up my candids game! My big camera hasn’t seen the light of day in over a year! I miss it but I just have time to deal with all that goes with pro quality images.

I have a mac, so mine are stored in Photos. I also back up to Google Photos, which is free.
I mostly use Photos to edit my photos. And they organized by year and then grouped by various topics under each year.

I store in the Pictures library. I have folders by year, then my date. I save them to 2 external hard drives after uploading more photos to the library. I also keep my phone photos on google photo.
I use PSE to edit. Sorry, no help with editing for you. I love PSE.

I just got Lightroom to do edits on my photos and organize/find them better. I was struggling with the Apple Photos app on an older laptop because my library got too big to store on my laptop, but once the archived photos were moved out of Photos (onto an EHD) I didn't have access to browsing/searching photos as easily or the metadata I had added or the albums I had added photos to (unless I exported them that way). Very frustrating. The good thing with LR is that it's a catalog so it can point to photos stored wherever they are on your computer/EHD and you can access all the stuff you can do within LR no matter where the photo physically is stored. (I haven't quite figured all that out yet, but I'm looking forward to that). The catalog shows all your photos together, and you can search for "old lady" or "circles" - I'm going to use it to organize digital supplies too. Most of the editing I need to do can be done through LR - I only need to go to PS when I'm messing with layers/digi scrapping. That's going to be nice. Photos had less useful editing tools. I also got cloud storage/sync through that LR/PS subscription.
