Several times a week, I have an hour commute with my 11 yr old daughter and 15 year old son. We are having trouble coming up with something we all want to listen to on the radio. I want to take advantage of our time to learn something (in a fun way) and something that will spark conversation.
We are new to the whole podcast world and I am wondering if you can recommend some of your favorites. We love history, mysteries, pop culture and trivia.
Also, I spend a lot of time in the car by myself too. What are your fave podcasts in general?

I listen to the Cine-Files on Fridays, but there is a Language warning and sometimes content you may not want your tween/teen to hear. They break down a film each week, going into the history of the production, its themes, and current influences. The only rule is it has to be more than 10 years old. This week is A League of Their Own, but when Burt Reynolds died they did Deliverance as a tribute to him (as an example of mature content) you can easily tell what they're breaking down before hand. Recent movies were Giant, The Breakfast Club, Lawrence of Arabia, they did Planes, Trains and Automobiles for Thanksgiving last year and spent a month on Citizen Cane. To a movie junkie like me, it's pretty fun.

How about Stuff you Missed in History Class or Stuff You Should Know? I've only listened to a few of each of those, but they were interesting and I don't remember any bad language (but I could have just not noticed).

My kids are on the younger end (11&9) both love Wow in the World. I also find it entertaining and well produced. Check out The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel for a scripted podcast done by kids.

Have your kids ever seen The West Wing? There is a podcast called the West Wing Weekly. My teenage kids love that show and got us hooked on the podcast.
Mike Rowe also does a podcast that is very Paul Harvey-esque. I really enjoy them.

I am a believer of "in my car, I/we listen to what I want". It would be a mix of classic rock, hair bands, disco and 70's pop(Ambrosia, Barry Manilow, Bread, etc..). Just my humble opinion....I would never let a child dictate what we listen to or watch on tv.
