My current house I've lived in 3 years. It is the only place where I've had a disposal. It is broken...again...this is the second disposal we have installed. I have 5 kids...so...you can see how my disposal keeps breaking. DH finally said last night, why doesn't he just take it out and install pipe. I like the disposal but pipes seem to be the smarter way to go while we have children in the house who aren't very careful.
So are you a disposal person or not? Will I regret not having it?

I haven't had one in the house we've been in for 21 years. It's against code because of the septic system. I've never missed it, even though we had one in our previous place. I compost vegetable stuff in the back yard instead.

i am not a disposal person even though we have one. must be a carry over from my childhood. my dad ALWAYS said never never put anything down the disposal. he said it's just as easy to walk the strainer to trash can. LOL. so now i don't use it 99% of the time. once in a while, i put small lemon peels down there with a little bleach just to swish it around a bit. that came from the plumber.

Had one growing up and can remember losing many pieces of silverware to it. Have been in the same house over 28 years and we haven't had one. Don't miss having one, in fact I like having all my intact silverware. We are on septic so I don't think it's an option for us...but even it were I wouldn't care to have one.

I've never not had one. The kitchen sinks at work don't have disposals and it's a mess on a daily basis. I can't imagine not having one, but I've never had one break ever.

I can't imagine not having one. Well, I can... my in-laws don't have one and I HATE it. We have a good, strong one that can even grind chicken bones and banana peels and I love love love it. Saves so much stuff from going in the trash where it would get stinky.

We didn't have one in our first house and we were in it for 10 years. We had a septic system and were told we couldn't have one. We built this house 20 years ago and we are still on a septic system but were told that we could have on. We did put one in when we built the house but I rarely use it. It's easier to just scrape things off into the trash and that's what I'm used to doing anyway. I keep a strainer in the drain so nothing really goes down it anyway. Even though we rarely use it, we have had to replace it once.

I cannot imagine not having one. It’s so easy and convenient.
Make sure you get a powerful disposal and you can put almost anything in it.
I don’t like having messy stinky stuff in the trash. I too can put things like chicken bones and banana peels in my disposal with no issues.

I don't use mine because it doesn't seem smart since I have a septic. In my old house the disposal did t work very well do I rarely used it and the house before that didn't have one. I'm happy just to scrape things into the trash. If stuff might get too stinky I freeze it and then take it out on trash day.

I would prefer to have one. Clean up after meals is much easier.

I’ve always had one, except the House I have now. Been here for 15 years and it took awhile to get used to not having one. Now I’m pretty much obsessed about taking every teeny, tiny speck of whatever out to the compost. I actually like it.

I prefer to have one as well. I don't abuse it and still throw a lot in the garbage, but love that I don't have to be super careful about things.

I can't imagine not having one, but I've never had one break ever. Strong magnets on the fridge thrown into the disposal will do the job! Ask my son!

If kids are breaking the garbage disposal because of what they are throwing in it, what makes you think that the drain won't keep getting clogged up then because they are rising stuff down it? Or the wrong stuff.
The only time I killed a garbage disposal was when I had peeled fresh carrots and put the tops down the disposal as well as the peels. They just wrapped right around the mechanism. whoops. Luckily it could be fixed with the special key that they have.
I can't imagine not having one. We only have trash picked up once every two weeks so I can't imagine how bad it would smell with garbage throw in. As it is we throw meat waste in the freezer until trash day to help with that.

My DD was cleaning the kitchen this time and I had an empty bottle of wine on the counter with a metal stopper in the top. She took the empty bottle out to recycling bin and tossed the stopper in the sink. My disposal must have been hanging tough for a while as it did break the stopper. But it also broke the disposal.

Never have had one. In my condo, it is not allowed. Never had one in any of the houses that I lived in. Plumber always said that they would be a constant pain, as they require cleaning and this will cost $$.
Also, we have a great recycling program where I live. Separate the paper from cardboard & bottles and have a counter-top organic recycling container. Simply scrape the plates into the organic container. The little bags are also compost. There is very little actual "garbage". There are the different recycling bins to use and are picked up by the waste management company without problem. The compost from our building goes into the regional compost centre and this is then used by the region/city for use in city landscaping projects.
How difficult is it to scrape the stuff into organic compost container than down a sink. REMEMBER that everything that goes down a sink has to be somehow filtered with water when the water is being treated to re-use.
Better for the environment to recycle and to compost.

Or the wrong stuff. This is our first house with a disposal and we've never had problems with clogged pipes in any other place that we've lived. I have used those little mesh strainers and none of the kids has ever had a problem with them. Just no one thinks to check that there isn't something caught in the disposal before turning it on.

Why would your DD put a stopper down the disposal? Isn't she older? That's not a thing you can blame on kids, but a duh! thing.
I'd find a screen that goes over the disposal hole. We've had a variety over the years and it helps keep items from accidentally dropping down into the disposal. I find them very handy and I wouldn't have a sink without one. My parents have a septic system and have one, but only plate scrapings can go into it. They compost the rest.

My DD didn't do it purposely. She threw it in the sink and I imagine with the water filling up, it floated down there. I like the disposal, but I don't want to keep replacing it.

I have a disposal but my home was built in the 50's and a plumber told me that it's not a good idea to use the disposal as a main source to dispose of food. I use mine for the small particles that get caught in the drain catch and I rinse dishes on that side of the sink so a few small particles from the dishes. The dishes are first scraped into the garbage then rinsed. I run some lemon juice in mine periodically to keep it fresh.
I did use mine when I first moved in to the house and it created a huge main blockage in my main drain. That's when the plumber advised me not to use it for anything other than what I described above.

We have one in our kitchen sink and I love it. I don't put a lot of stuff down the disposal, most everything goes into compost, but I love not having to deal with emptying a strainer.

I have a love affair with my disposal in my old house. It should have moved out with instead of my husband.
My son took it out and replaced it with pipes as he is to cheap to run the amount of water needed to keep it running right.

I have one plus a screen to catch the bigger stuff, it works well for us. The sink in our office break room doesn’t have a disposal and it’s always getting clogged because people can’t be bothered to scrape their dishes into the trash.

All my homes have had one and I’ve never had a problem .We owned one home on a septic system and were able to install a disposal designed for septic. It made a finer grind and had a enzyme thing that was mixed with the ground stuff.

REMEMBER that everything that goes down a sink has to be somehow filtered with water when the water is being treated to re-use. Better for the environment to recycle and to compost. Well, our HOA has banned composting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I suspect some people weren't doing it properly and putting things in there that shouldn't have been there, but there was beginning to be a vermin problem in parts of the neighborhood and NO ONE wanted that to get out of hand. Our neighborhood is high density but borders farm land (typical for new construction around here), and that could very rapidly become a real problem. Our area once had curbside composting but that went away because the "plant" where it was being taken couldn't handle the volume and it was creating odor issues in the community that surrounded it, so the whole program was shut down.

we have always had one and one has never broken. are your kids cavemen or something?
while not a necessity, it is certainly handy to have. if you get a nice one it should last you for many years.
