My 14-year-old niece is interested in calligraphy and I thought I might get her some pens and paper. Are there any tools like that that have a high "teen-approved" factor? I remember having an actual fountain pen set with different barrels of ink when I was a kid...not sure if she'd like something that complex.

Aldis had a set in the ad this week that looked interesting - I was considering it for my 12 y/o

A set of brush pen markers in 10-12 colors would be great for your niece. Missy Briggs, a calligrapher I follow, has some free guides you could print out and add to the gift. She also links several good beginner pen sets and papers in her lettering supplies section. www.missybriggs.com/learn-brush-calligraphyMost of the calligraphers I follow use brush markers not ink and nibs like for italic/old English style lettering.

This is just an fyi ... there is a slight distinction between calligraphy and lettering. Calligraphy uses nibs and inks and there is a set way to make each letter. Lettering does not use the nibs and is more freeform than calligraphy. The current popular style with the brush markers is lettering. I think both are beautiful arts.
OP, if you want actual calligraphy supplies, I know Michaels sells sets that would be good for beginners. They also have brush markers, so you can go either way.

I follow thehappyevercrafter on IG and her blog. She teaches Modern Calligraphy. She has free drills on her site. These are the basic strokes. Once you master them, then you can purchase her workbooks. She recommends Tombow Fudenosuke (sp?) Hard Tip for beginners using small pen, but Tombow Brush Markers are also on her list for large pen. I found her site helpful because there are videos to accompany the lesson.

Very cool hobby! Jet Pens has a great selection of pens and supplies. They also have free shipping with a $25 order. If she wants some fun colored calligraphy pens or brush pens they have them there at reasonable prices. I've tried this calligraphy pen and it's good for the money. They also have really cute cases to store the pens and supplies. Basically, it's a pen and stationery lovers' rabbit hole.

I have always loved this book by Lisa Englebrecht called Modern Mark Making. It’s cheap on Amazon along with a nice set of markers (she recommends several in the book) would make a nice gift.

There are some pens called Pilot Parallels that are calligraphy pens with the ability to do some color mixing by touching two pens tip to tip. There are videos demonstrating this on YouTube. The pamphlet the pen comes with has three alphabets and a bunch of examples of fancy stuff. I'm sure the Jetpens website mentioned earlier would carry them. I've placed an order or two with them before.
