My 14-year-old niece is interested in calligraphy and I thought I might get her some pens and paper for Christmas. I had a fountain pen set when I was her age, but I found it frustrating to use. Anybody know of any pens that would appeal to a teen? She loves pens in general, so any non-calligraphy suggestions are also appreciated.

Would brush lettering be a good start? Kellycreates has great workbooks to practice on and learn. She also sells markers. I took a class from her and she is amazing.

A normal fountain pen does not work well if you intend to do calligraphy, they use flex nibs, not the "normal" ones.

I just recently found Pilot Parallel pens. They are fantastic and may be a good start for your niece

I hope she is right handed because as a lefty, even leftie pen nibs make things very hard. Personally I would buy a starter calligraphy set.

Tuesday Morning has really neat quill & ink pot calligraphy gift sets right now. The set has several nibs to change out.
I might go back and pick one up for myself. I started calligraphy around age 12, with a set my mom got me.

Has she actually said “calligraphy”? I ask because brush lettering is really popular at the moment, but it’s different from calligraphy. I’d hate for you to spend the money on calligraphy pens if she really is interested in brush lettering. While they can be the same writing supplies, the practice sheets are completely different.
