This twice annual ritual is one I truly dread each time.
Some people have closets big enough and wardrobes small enough to have all of their clothes out at once and are able to choose from all of their clothes at any time.
Some people live in mild climates where they really only need 1 wardrobe with maybe a few warm pieces.
Some people live in climates that have actual defined seasons and are able to put away all out of season clothes at the beginning of the next season and not have to worry for six months.
I am none of those people.
Living here in the mid-south it is a climate roller coaster. This past spring we had all four seasons in one week. We are smack in the middle of the two or three seasons in a day period. It might be 40 in the morning but quickly get up to the 80s and then drop to 60s when the sun goes down.
For the most part, this time of year is all about layering and spending a large part of your day taking clothes off or putting more on.
It is November so I really need to get out some warmer clothes, long sleeves, jackets etc. However, we will still have warm days where I might need something lighter. So right now my bedroom looks like a clothing cyclone has hit it as I try to decide what to put up and what few things I want to leave out.
I won't even touch on the whole "my clothes shrunk while on storage ". I just tried on a pair of jeans from last year and I heard the fabric weep.
Someone hold me.

I live in a four-seasons area and I used to do this. Then one year I just couldn't and I downsized. Now I have a drawer for tee-shirts and another for long-sleeved shirts that don't need to be hung and they just stay there all year. I have sweaters folded on a closet shelf and they stay there. I have short and long sleeved shirts hanging, but only ones that I really wear. I got rid of all those that I just never wore. Sweaters/jackets are also hanging. I have a smallish closet that I share with my dh but after I got rid of so much it's worked out well. SO much easier than doing all the hauling up and down stairs every year. I do keep a few things down in the basement in one of those zip "wardrobe" things, but they're more specific occasion clothes rather than seasonal... Things like my two (yes, only two, lol) dressy dresses, my holiday skirts and tops (those soft velvet-type things with the sparkles going through them), etc. Not much else actually.

I have to do the same. I keep my out of season clothes in the guest room closet.
I agree, it's a pain.

I live in Pacific NW. We generally have mild weather, but then it can be 80 in October, or 50 degrees in June... We also go camping in the summer and need to take jeans, socks and sweaters... so no point in packing those away. I gave up switching out the wardrobes for the season and just own less clothes

We always did that growing up. The second the summer clothes go away, a warm front will hit.

we just did that this weekend. i have bulky sweaters and coats that i don't like to have out all year so, we do the change out too. it also gives me a chance to go through my stuff for donations. after the change out last weekend, we did a huge donation of summer clothes, shoes and sweaters that i probably wouldn't wear this winter.

I feel your pain. It's supposed to get up to 85 today but in the 50s on Friday. I do have a closet big enough to hold everything, but I don't like it like that. Right now, I'm just digging into my underbed storage box as needed until we make the full switch to winter.

I had a college friend that did that. The first time she told me I was like “What?! This is So Cal, we wear the same things year round!” Lol! We do have ups and downs in temperature during the winter, especially if a Santa Ana kicks up, but I only have a few cold wear items so they stay in my closet year round.

It is so hot in our office I wear summer tops all year round. It is easier to put on a light sweater if I feel a chill (not often) than to sweat all day long and just want a nap bc I am too hot.

OMG I was just thinking THIS MORNING that this day is coming for me....and I detest it!! Do you live in Texas, by chance? Our weather has been all over the place this week!

Yes! Living in the South makes it necessary to keep some things from all seasons accessible at all times! It's going up to 80* here today - and the low will be 38* on Saturday night.

I've just downsized and actually so many items are easy to layer or not and wear most of the year anyways.

OMG I was just thinking THIS MORNING that this day is coming for me....and I detest it!! Do you live in Texas, by chance? Our weather has been all over the place this week! No, I'm in Mississippi. So we cooled down a bit before y'all did, but we had teams close to 90 within the last few weeks. I kind of feel sorry for those ladies that insist on dressing by the calendar and not the actual weather. You see them sporting their leggings, boots and chunky sweaters and it is close to 80 degrees and they look like they are about to melt. And then you have the college kids who never wore a jacket or coat when mom told them to and all of a sudden they are on their own and the first cold snap they show up to class wrapped in a comforter. This year DD saw 2 or 3 on campus. She said one was a senior and should know better, but she wore a crop top with a comforter. DD said she wanted to tell her that is not really how layering works.

Mid-Atlantic region here, and I just did the twice-annual swap-out this past weekend. Soooo much fun -- uh - NOT! I have a fairly large closet, and was getting to the point where only a small number of things had to be swapped out seasonally, but then DD moved back home and DH & I had to give up the extra closet where we kept a lot of seasonal things and most of his hanging/dress clothes. So now I have my seasonal things in a zippered hanging wardrobe (like the thing monklady123 mentioned) but it's in the basement (we're on the top floor) so I have to schlep it all up and down the stairs. DH's things had to move into our (now) shared walk-in closet, so there's a lot less room to keep things out year round like I was starting to do. I did do a huge purge and downsize when we moved DD back in, so that helped a lot. But I still have quite a few days in the spring and fall when I get partially dressed and then run down to the basement to the wardrobe to pull something out and finish the outfit based on weather anomalies (or possibly laziness some days, LOL ...)

In the same boat in SoCal. Should be cooler by now, but we just have cool evenings and mornings with warm days. And, I want to wear my cute cold weather clothes, dammit! They are mostly in a pile on a bench at the end of the bed.
